![]() I thought it might be interesting to start a thread like this. I'll do my best to answer any questions about asian culture.
Why are asians bad drivers? The majority of bad asian drivers are immigrants. If you ever visit Taiwan, you'll know why they are such bad drivers. In asia, street signals and laws are "optional". Driving is insane there. You HAVE to drive under the speed limit so you'll have time to avoid people breaking laws on the road. Let me give you an example... When driving on the highway, we assume people coming from an on-ramp will merge properly into traffic. In Taiwan, many people just bomb onto the freeway, and whoever is on it needs to get out of the way. So, sometimes you see asians slowing down at random times on the roads, and sometimes you see a bomber. That's because they're trying to avoid the random bomber. Hit and runs are very common there. If you park on the street there, dont' be surprised if you have "surprises" waiting for you when you get back. Your car may have dings, or you may be missing a sideview mirror. Another reason is that many asians (like my parents) are very conservative. They came here for a higher education, so they're kinda nerdy and conservative. My mom takes forever when she's doing any type of reverse manuever. She figures if she takes a little extra time, she might be able to avoid an accident that would cost her a lot of money. So how do people have nice cars there? First of all, people who have nice cars there are VERY rich. Taxes on new cars are insane. For example, you can get a new Lexus RX for about 40K. It will cost you more than 65K if you buy it in Taiwan. If you're rich enough to have a car like that, you're also rich enough to have a place to park it. Also, people who are really rich have drivers. It's much more common there than here. |

![]() You think you're funny, don't you? You're hi LAR ious!
![]() I come from a family of horrible Asian drivers. I probably have my faults as well, but I know these few rules that make me an exception to the rule: 1. I drive over 75 in the far left lane, but only for PASSING. 2. I don't overuse my brakes. 3. I usually know where I'm going so I don't have to suddenly (but slowly) merge into other lanes. 4. I can see over the dash. 5. I was taught to drive by non-Asian instructors. 6. I'm a twinkie: yellow on the outside, white on the inside. |

![]() Not to be racist, but this is racist, i thought blacks were the worst drivers since there are NONE of note in motorsport. Asians at least have F1 and MotoGP secured. I will say though, that whites are the worst drivers in terms of crash statistics.

![]() I've always wanted to know more about the naming conventions for Asian names.
In NA, we usually are addressed by given name followed by family name. But I've noticed that it may not necessarily be the same in Asian countries. eg: Kim Il Jong and Kim Il Sung. I'm assuming that Kim is the family name (father and son). Also, I receive emails from a friend who is Japanese, and her last name preceeds her first name in the emails. And also when announced during the Pride Fights, the last name preceeds the first name. I'm guessing that these cultures place more emphasis on family than individuality, and thus the family name are said first? Whaaaaat's the deal? |

But, seriously, the Asian cultures put family above all else. When I am introducing myself to other Asians (well, at least my parents' Asian friends), I will use my last name, then my first name. |

![]() Where the heck did you get that notion? @_@ Maybe they will put their surname last for and as a Western convention (i.e. Romanized names), but when writing out the Kanji, the surname is first just like Chinese names.

Yes, Mr. Obvious, but out of politeness and respect, I always introduce myself by my full name, even if they're friends of my parents. My parents never used my full name when they yelled at me. Last edited by merilee; 10-20-2006 at 02:55 PM. Reason: The ironing!!!! |
