What if center differential fails?
I am going to be driving 250 miles to a rallycross event. My center differential is burned, and the bearings are getting noisy and sloppy. I've done several events on them so far, but this is the first one further away.
In the event of a center diff failure, can I just disconnect and remove the rear driveshaft to limp it home? It is a manual 5 speed, 06 Impreza non turbo.

But more importantly, I would NOT drive let alone rallycross without repairing it first. I mean why not fail the cir-clip and send it through the transfer gears to chunk most of the teeth off? All you are doing is ensuring yourself a full 5MT rebuild. Fixing it now might just be a Cdiff, transfer bearings, maybe transfer gears, and all work in the transfer and extension cases. |

Kind of figured. Bleh. Since the center diff is definitely burned (sticks/clicks when turned and backing up) it's more cost effective to just get a good used trans and swap it in for now. New center diff goes for 550 shipped. I can get a good used trans with a warranty from a local subaru yard for 450. Then I could eventually replace the current one with a new diff and bearings.

Yea probably a good plan to take.
You won't know what all needs replacing until you open up that 5MT and have a look. Plan on at least a Cdiff, all transfer bearings, ext housing roller bearing, tube of ultra gray, gear oil, FSM specs, maybe a few shims, etc. Hopefully the gears on the transfer shafts are good so you can reuse those. Also a good time to replace the shift selector seal and rear seal (if those are leaky). Best of luck. |
