Default 2015 WRX Intermittent AC

Solved, but figured I would post because I saw a lot of other threads on the issue pointing at other components, like removing shims to close the gap with the compressor clutch, a TSB on the original compressors (10-84-16), etc.

About a year ago on really hot days, I noticed my AC would intermittently be very weak, and eventually would cut out entirely blowing hot, humid air. It generally happened on the highway, and would occasionally kick back on in local traffic.

Short story is that it was the condenser fan relay, p/n 82501AG041 . It would intermittently stick open, the compressor would overheat and the clutch would cease to engage (not sure if that's some protection feature or just a consequence of overheating). I assume the highway/local traffic observation was just a coincidence, or maybe shifting jolted the relay to close.

Longer story is I assumed it was low on refrigerant, decided I didn't want to deal with refrigerant cans and took it to the dealer. The only contraindication was I definitely had one case where the AC was out, but came back strong quicker than it could if something was freezing up from low coolant, which had me thinking something electrical was up. The dealer found a leaking condenser and failed compressor clutch, replaced both condenser and compressor, but it was doing the same thing when I got it back. When I stopped, I noticed the compressor clutch was not engaging, despite being set to Auto/Lo. When I restarted the car the clutch did engage. I never looked at the condenser fan.
On the second try the dealer found the sticking relay.

Obviously suspicious about the the necessity of that initial shotgun part replacement, but it's working like new now.
