Default Windshield washer sensor operation

Does anyone know if the windshield washer pump operation is tied to the fluid level sensor? In other words, if my sensor reads that I am low on fluid, will it automatically disable the pump?
My Impreza is developing an intermittent problem with the washer fluid sensor. I know I need to replace the entire reservoir to replace the sensor. If the pump will run no matter what, I will delay replacing the reservoir because I am good about keeping it full. If I could be left without pump operation because of the faulty sensor, I will give it more priority.
Because my problem is intermittent, I haven't had an opportunity yet to test the pump while the sensor reads "low fluid".

Should still activate pump with low level. Its really just a sensor to let the driver know its almost empty, odds are the sensor plug pins are corroded or falling out of connector common issue ive found with some of the subarus coming in the shop.
