Have a Nice Day? I have a bad feeling I will never get this turbo kit installed...

I dont know, this has been taking sooo freakin long guys... Ive been getting stuff for this kit since what, August? I still dont have everything I need, and im having sooo much trouble finding anyone to actually help get things installed... Even more difficulty finding all the little tidbits that are needed... And Ive already spent $2k on everything (including a jdm engine, which ive been using parts of to complete this kit, but ya it bumped up the cost)

And my deadline is march 21rst, the day before the big subaru track day down at Buttonwillow that I want the car done for. I dont want to do another track day again with so little HP and being passed by everyone and their mom

Heres a list of some of the problems I have:

1) The Vortech RRFPR I have is missing 2 fittings
2) I still dont have fittings for the oil lines or oil return (using one of the pre-screw holed oil-galley plugs for it)
3) I dont have the hoses for the oil lines or return
4) I have to figure out where to mount the wrx coolant box that will supply the coolant to the turbo
5) Need to mount the legacy turbo crossmember i have coming before I do the rest of the kit (and borrow someones borla headers to do it)
6) I need to have two pipes custom made, one small section for the intake and one 90 degree bend for the turbo to intercooler
7) I have to have a bracket for the turbo
8) I need to have the S-AFC and ITC installed before I do everything else
9) Need to deal with taping for the EGT (suggested to use the old oil gally plug and the stock 02 sensor hole in the header)
10) Have to deal with what vacum hoses I need or dont need (which deals with the custom piping as well)
11) Have to wire up the EGT, Boost guage, and also the Pump for the air-water intercooler system
12) Have to figure out where to mount the pump for the air-water system
13) Still need a radiator/tranny cooler/oil cooler for the air-water system, something that has the right dimensions to fit in the front and isnt too small (and need to figure out how to mount it)
14) Need all the piping for the air-water system (and all the other extra piping im going to need as well)
15) I cant afford to be without the car for more than one day
16) I cant afford to pay for a shop to do ALL of this stuff
17) I dont know how to do wiring myself, and cant weld myself either
18) I have the flu now

Search more? Why do you think this has taken so long? And I cant afford a "tuner". I think the biggest problem that is never mentioned is that you need to be able to weld and fabricate yourself in order to put together a turbo kit yourself, and have a spare car so you can leave the one you are working on sitting in the garage for weeks at a time... Not to mention how hard it is to get details about little things from people who actually have been through all of this (like, what specific oil fittings to use... everyone just says "go to a generic shop and ask" instead of listing which specific part you can just order or ask for at the counter)

sorry, maybe you could search for someone within a couple hundred miles or something...have him stop by? maybe?

dunno

good luck tho man!

I have lots of people in my area who would help, but not without me paying serious cash for it. Everyone else has either disapeared or run away in fear.

i'll make you feel better....

Hmmm, i bought my car November of 2000.

1) Bought the TEC-II Forced Induction Kit December of 2001
2) Been collecting misc. turbo pieces since then.
3) I still haven't installed the TEC-II

So coming up on three years...

But to help you with your problems? Is it money factor on most of them, or is it just you don't know part numbers, sources etc?

1) Fittings can usually be had at Lowes' or any Hardware Store
2) I can get you part numbers if you need them
3) Same as two, or just go to ISR and order the Stainless Steel Ones
4) Don't worry about using it as you need to get the wrx coolant pipe that goes up the driver's side of the block and then crosses over to the passengers to connect to the coolant pipe. What I would do just make a bracket to hold it in place, or just don't use it at all. Do like the Custom RS Guys, just use a coolant feed and return from the coolant hoses on the back of the block. If you have a WRX waterpump, just return it there.
5) Can't help you there, that's necessary. I would keep the stock manifold for now, but that's just me.
6) take that to a machine shop, but for now just use silicone hosing or even plastic dryer duct hose. This can be a temporary solution.
7) Bracket to hold it? Dude use your brain, go to Lowes buy a big thick piece of steel flat rod, bend a 90 degree angle on it, drill holes that are necessary and bolt it to the tranny bolt on the side just like ludespeed.
8) This is all about two hours worth of time soldering...No Biggie there.
9) That's a good Idea, didn't think of that one.
10) Have to deal with what vacum hoses I need or dont need (which deals with the custom piping as well)
11) Same with #8
12) Somwhere in the passenger side or driver's side if you have a small battery?
13) You don't necessarily need it right now IMHO.
14) Piping, can't you use rubber hosing??
15) You will have to make the sacrafice to spend two weekends on it. Borrow mom's car or get rides from friends. Repay them with favors later.
16) You can do most of this stuff yourself.
17) Get someone who knows how to solder for the electrical stuff. Soldering is easy. I'd recommend getting a soldering station and cheap 30watt gun (both can be had for like $20 bucks). Buy 63/37 solder and practice on some scrap wire. That's what I did, learned quick and now it's all about the soldering baby!.
18) Get your girl or your guy to take care of you to make you feel better

Point being is that you are gonna have to sacrifice a couple of weekends with a Monday off to run to the shop and stuff to do it. It is tough as the car may be your dailiy driver, but well worth it at the end.

have fun. hope i helped.

I think you need to just dive in. Just set you mind to it and start installing the gauges and the piggy backs at least. Those you should be able to install on your own based on directions from this site and www.scoobymods.com or www.northursalia.com Many of the things will prove to be much easier than you think. Plus it will make you feel like your making head way.

Yeah doing a small part at a time definately helps. I started doing parts of my install as early as Feb and never got the turbo in and running till late May. Granted I was in school and working so had limited time to work on stuff but doing guages, oil pan, x member on different weekends will greatly reduce the stress in the final install and help you focus and double check that everything is in order.

Check the limits of the RS-T thread to see how I feel about my car now. RS-T's rock and I love them but man they can get on your nerves after a while! Good luck with everything and if you get to work it'll all come together.

as far as the turbo pipes go, the straight and the 90 deg. section, just go on ebay and find an intake for anything thats the right diamater and has those two shapes in it, then hack it up with a hack saw or dremel or something

good luck

Maybe I've missed something, but here's my understanding of your situation.

You have a 95 Impreza with a 1.8L engine and you want more power.

You have a JDM engine, most likely 2.0L and factory turbocharged.

Why aren't you talking "swap" instead of "kit?"

Because its going to be another several (like 6+) months before I rebuild this engine. Its in peices, and alot of pieces are still missing.

I cant find any at Lowes or Home depot. Everything is either plastic or huge. Im going to try tognotti's though, which is a local automotive aftermarket store... But I could use the actual part numbers if you have them for sure (or at least what company makes them)

So just run a tap from one of the coolant lines on the back of the block and then into one of the inlets on the water pump? I did notice those extra inlets on the pump I have... Got any diagrams of this?

Well really I onlly need one 90 degree bend 2" steel exhaust pipe to make it. I can get one of those easy, but then I have to figure out which vacum hoses or bov lines need to go into it and thats the part I dont have the tools to do. (I can cut it to fit just fine, but the problem with that is I have to have everything all mounted to know where to cut it)

I dont know of this. Need more info. (pic)

Its not the soldering i'm worried about. Im an artist, not an electrical engineer.
Quote:
12) Somwhere in the passenger side or driver's side if you have a small battery?
Well its designed to go in the wheel well behind the fender liner. But I dont know if it will bolt up there on imprezas like it does on older legacies.
Quote:
14) Piping, can't you use rubber hosing??
Ya, I have to get it still though. And I need my radiator first to know what kind of fitting to attach them with. (The one I have now which is too deep has screw type attachments, so i'd have to have some sort of screw fitting)
Quote:
15) You will have to make the sacrafice to spend two weekends on it. Borrow mom's car or get rides from friends. Repay them with favors later.
I dont have "weekends", my work schedule is determined only a week before so I have no idea what days I have off until then. And the 'rents cant know about this, as they would freak out if I told them I was putting in a turbo kit. (yes, I have all of this stuff and they know jack about it) They would also freak out if the car was out of commision for more than one day (they freak out if its out of commision over night, or if something goes wrong with any of the small installs I do, think its the end of the world) but if just show up one day with a turbo kit in my car, and as this will be like a totally stealth kit with only the two gauges visually aluding to the fact that something is different about the car they wont even know anything is different. The car is not owned by them either, its my car and I pay for it but they still freak out cause they dont know anything about cars and think they are some sort of forbiden realm of doom.
Quote:
16) You can do most of this stuff yourself.
Yes I can, but like I just said, not in one day and not here.

Its not the soldering that I need help with, im just going to do quick connect connections so I can remove the s-afc and itc later (but ya, some other stuff will need soldering, i can do that) but the whole wiring thing I have no knowledge of and dont want to explode my ecu.

18) Get your girl or your guy to take care of you to make you feel better

So coming up on three years...

I'm with you on this one But I've gone a bit farther. I started collecting my turbo parts almost 2 years ago. First thing I did was install gauges and install the tec 2 and injectors . While I was working on collecting the other parts I needed, I learned how to tune the tec2 and learned how the car behaved.

Worked on it one weekend at a time. Did the fuel pump and fpr one weekend, the oil pan, oil feed and oil return lines (they're just capped off) another weekend.

I've finally done everything I could. I was hoping to finally finish it off Friday... then found out that the downpipe didn't fit! I'd have to get it custom-made. Hopefully in 2 weeks it'll finally be done!

Bought the car April 2001, it's been almost 3 years. I only have one more year and i'd ahve to worry about smogging the car!!

I recommend getting the SAFC installed at least to get it started. You might want to ask sti-nismo-dood (sp?) I believe he has a turbo'd 1.8 fwd impreza as well with an SAFC.

good luck with that..

The AFC install is pretty easy, you just have to go at it. Remember the install instructions are on Apex'i's website in PDF format, and there are only about 5 wires you need to connect (throttle, MAF, power, ground, etc.) Just find out what those exact wires are on your car using diagrams from apexi's site (usually the wire colors on your harness will be the same) and connect one wire at a time using vampire clips. Solder is optional if you plan to disconnect it. The MAF wire needs to be cut, one end connects to one wire from the AFC harness, the other end to another wire. Between the scoobymods writeup and the wiring diagrams available from several places, it's as easy as closing a few vampire clips and crimping on a few connectors.

I am not sure what you planned to do with the EGT gauge, but usually the best location to mount the sender is in the exhaust manifold. tmat3 has a good writeup of his install on his homepage, which is also at scoobymods.

Overall, I agree with Mancini, you just have to start getting things done. Just jump in there and do one thing at a time. Don't be discouraged because it is a long process, but one thing at a time you can get it done. You should be able to have everything setup at the end so you can bolt on the last turbo parts, air and oil lines in a day or so, at least I would think you could.

After I get the S-AFC and ITC installed, do you guys think I can run the car with the Legacy Turbo injectors and WRX fuel pump installed without the turbo? (IE to save some time there)

You have the right idea about saving time so final install day will require minimal work. The fuel pump you should be ok with. The injectors should be fine also, but (I think) you will need make use of your AFC to remove some fuel with the larger injectors in.

Ya, thats why I meant installing them after the s-afc and itc I still need to get them installed though. I have everything to do it material wise I believe, but still just need a hand to keep from ruininating my car.

Ok, i read your super-list of problems, and didnt take time to read all the replies, so someone might have said this already.

But in my case, i bought my turbo before i had the car. Then I collected parts for about 8 months. so I was in the same boat as you.

I agree w/ a couple of the replies.

1. Start installing the stuff that can be installed. ITC and SAFC. They are not difficult to install. Start reading the wiring diagrams. Ask questions when you can't figure it out.

2. Take it one step at a time. If you look at it as a big install, you will just be overwhelmed. It is a one-piece-at-a-time deal.

3. Narrow down the things that you can't possibly do. Like weld the EGT bung. In cases like that, do all you can. I.E. Drill the hole and pound in the bung. THEN take it to a shop and have them run a bead around it. This will only cost you like 20 bucks or less.

4. Add anyone of us to your buddy list, so you can deal w/ the random questions.

In all honesty man, you have to keep yourself together about this. If you can't handle the install, I think it will be difficult for you to deal w/ all the problems that come w/ having a Turbo car, like tuning, or possible blown engine, broken tranny...etc.

1) The Vortech RRFPR I have is missing 2 fittings
www.mcmaster.com has all the fittings you could ever want.

2) I still dont have fittings for the oil lines or oil return (using one of the pre-screw holed oil-galley plugs for it)
You can order one of the new galley plugs with the pre-threaded holes, and a 1/8"NPT fitting will screw into it fine even though it's BSPT.

3) I dont have the hoses for the oil lines or return
Do you have a tapped oil pan? Getting lines shouldn't be a problem for either once you have your ends worked out. The top you can get a pre-made Earl's -4an line (female -4an on both ends) and it'll work perfect if you've got fittings set up for that already. The bottom can use any number of things, as long as they seal and can be fairly decently heated since they'll be next to the header. I've seen both a rubber-type hose and stainless hose used.

4) I have to figure out where to mount the wrx coolant box that will supply the coolant to the turbo
I'm assuming this is for the JDM motor you mentioned? If you're not changing your radiator, you don't need to switch over to this system, just tap coolant lines into the heater core lines and call it a day.

5) Need to mount the legacy turbo crossmember i have coming before I do the rest of the kit (and borrow someones borla headers to do it)
Well, you have to pull the motor to do this anyways, so.... chop chop!

6) I need to have two pipes custom made, one small section for the intake and one 90 degree bend for the turbo to intercooler
Muffler shop? Race shop? If they're simple, you could always order pre-bent sections of tube and cut them to length.

7) I have to have a bracket for the turbo
Well, if you're using the WRX-type setup, it'll have a bracket that bolts to the corner of the head from the uppipe, that should be enough.

8) I need to have the S-AFC and ITC installed before I do everything else
So.... get to it!

9) Need to deal with taping for the EGT (suggested to use the old oil gally plug and the stock 02 sensor hole in the header)
Thats not a bad idea as I think it's the same thread, but I wonder about clearance. Otherwise I would just pull it off and have a muffler shop do it.

10) Have to deal with what vacum hoses I need or dont need (which deals with the custom piping as well)
There is no way to tell until you get in there and do it.

11) Have to wire up the EGT, Boost guage, and also the Pump for the air-water intercooler system
Do it at the same time as the gauges, make your life easy and get all the electrical done at once.

12) Have to figure out where to mount the pump for the air-water system
Next to the ABS is a great place if it's electronic. Low and out of the way, and making a bracket is simple if you don't just want to screw into the body there.

13) Still need a radiator/tranny cooler/oil cooler for the air-water system, something that has the right dimensions to fit in the front and isnt too small (and need to figure out how to mount it)
You've got a lot of room up there... pretty much anything will work as long as it isn't too thick. I believe that the opening in the RS bumper is 6x20, so anything within that size should work great.

14) Need all the piping for the air-water system (and all the other extra piping im going to need as well)
Rubber tube, isn't it? Go to the auto parts store and buy 15 feet and call it a day.

15) I cant afford to be without the car for more than one day
Plan for 3-5 days. If you can't get it, don't do it until you can.

16) I cant afford to pay for a shop to do ALL of this stuff
I don't blame you, but even they won't be able to do it within a day's time.

17) I dont know how to do wiring myself, and cant weld myself either
Wiring is easy, perhaps you can contract a sube nut locally to help you out that has done a decent amount of wiring.

18) I have the flu now
Lots and lots of vitamin C and sleep.

You're not gonna get it done by march 21st, sorry. I think you're right, you're never gonna get it installed. Might as well just give up.
