02 WRX - Refusing to go into Programming mode for key fob
So I bought a blue/orange button OEM Subaru key fob for my 02 WRX for the fact that I got tired of opening my doors with a key. I looked up the programming sequence "open/shut door, cycle key 10-12 times" and it seemed pretty straight forward, but once I do the door step and cycle my key, the car does not honk at me to tell me about its programming mode. I can restart the process however many times, and cycle the key however many times, and it still does not do anything. I reset the battery thinking I was in Valet mode, still nothing. I just really want to use a remote...

You can always go to a dealer. My '06 flat refused to program -- apparently the programming details changed mid-model year.
Whatever your problem, the dealer can fix it. Maybe a last resort for you (it was for me) but they can and will fix it. Just make sure when you come in you bring documantation to prove it's your car! |

Does/did the car have a turbo timer?
If so it's possible the key sense wire was cut to allow the alarm to arm while the timer runs. This will make it impossible to program a remote unless the wire is reconnected. |

You can lock the door with the door lock button and the alarm will still arm (as long as its not in valet mode) |

When you cycle the key, how far forward toward the dash are you going> what position is the key in? Have you tried 12-15 times turning the key? Did it have a turbo timer? (like Mulder asked) Are all the windows and doors completely closed? Did it ever have an aftermarket alarm? |

I'm in the same situation. Lost my keys about a couple months ago and have been attempting to get my car into program mode for so long now. I can get the alarm to arm by using the button on the door to lock and turn it off the alarm(while its going off) by cycling the key 3 times in the ignition. But other than that it won't program. So I know its receiving a signal and responding to it. but cant get it into programming mod so its odd situation.

The 'trunk' button is another way to put the alarm in and out of valet mode. **Make sure all windows, doors, hood and trunk are closed. **Get in and close the door. **Turn the key in the ignition to the 'ON" position 10 times within 15 seconds **You should hear the horn/chirp **Open and close the drivers side door. **Press one button on the remote **Open and close the drives side door **If you have other remotes, repeat the last 2 steps for all remotes **Remove key from the ignition **The horn should beep/chirp again **Check remote(s) NOTE: If you mess up during any of the steps, remove the key from the ignition, open and close the drivers side door and start over. NOTE: You must program all remotes at the same time. Remotes not programmed at the same time will no longer work. My experience is that the above can take a couple tries to get right. its a PITA as i recall Last edited by 86Dreams; 05-13-2021 at 04:03 PM. Reason: how many times can a thread get necrobumped |

the last post above is the Correct Procedure for 02-07 Impreza's for sure. "kidney" shaped remote with orange/blue buttons.
On my '04 WRX Sport Wagon it worked great first couple times. Last 2 attempts not so much.. things I've learned and tricks to avoid issues. Learned: 1. Take primary key OFF the gaggle of keys and Remote, have only the KEY in the ignition. 1.b. Remote loose from the gaggle as well 2. parking brake SET headlights OFF. Parking brake = DRL's OFF 3. don't depress the clutch or brake pedal. 4. the more fluid you can go from full off to ON. NOT START/CRANK It'll take a little practice. don't get discouraged. like its been said, if you are wondering if you messed up, pull the key, open the driver's door. Close it, start again. 5. Double check the 2025 battery is NEW as possible. Also be sure that the cold solder joint on the left side (top off- the cover with buttons) is solid. I've had (3) "new" remotes where the cold solder joints were broken. 5B. quick fix: Loctite Blue Super Glue Gel Control, hold the tab down and put a VERY SMALL dab of glue at the contact point while holding the tab down firmly. I've done this 4-5 times and my current fob is almost 4 years old. Just changed a battery this past week. 6. Because now the 2-button "Kidney" Remotes are $14/pr on ebay all day long, or less. ~Rob |

For me the security light doesn't even turn on I'm having the same issue. Went to Subaru and they said it'll be $160 to check it out and max would be $500 to repair

The security module was an option, do you know if it's even installed on your car? It would be located under the center console behind the e-brake. If there's nothing there, that explains why no light.
