Have a Nice Day? What does OT think of this...If you're all PC and stuff, be forewarned - This isn't.

I work for a moderately competitive private university in NJ.

I have noticed that A LOT of students from India seem to go here, so I did some checking in the university database:

There are over 2,200 records (students, former students, and applicants) with the last name "Patel."

There are over 600 records with the last name "Gupta."

When I looked up "Smith," possibly the most common last name in America, there were only 1,800 records.

Because India still works within the de facto caste system. You can tell by an Indian person's last name if they are well to do. It takes some money to get to America to go to college, therefore those who make it will come from a far smaller name pool than Americans.

Compound that with the fact that there are certain universities that attract certain ethnicities, and I'll bet that's how that happened.

Unless you have an admissions officer by the name of Gupta

I'm having trouble finding the point of this thread.

I had a co-worker with the last name Patel.

I can't find anything to think, and I can't find anything non-PC about this.

Why don't you see how many "Nguyen"'s there are. Some nationalities just have fewer variety of last names.

Anybody want me to check any other names?

There are over 900 with the last name "Rodriguez," just over 1000 with the last name "Jones," and just over 900 with the last name "Shah."

Most of the people of Indian origin who I come into contact with are education visa holders (FI visa). In other words, they're coming to the US specifically to get an education.

My problem with this is that we are educating people who will go back to India and take jobs that US companies have sent there. Essentially, WE ARE EDUCATING OUR COMPETITION.
That bothers me.

This study in sociology sucks. As said before, different schools attract different ethnicities. I am enrolled in a university in the city known for technical majors, ie. engineering. I am in the minority. If you looked at an engineering school such as Bucknell in central PA, I would be in the majority. It's simple.

It's not a 'study' in the empirical sense. It's just an quantitative observation.

I can't do that. I've been surrounded with a large population of Italian-Americans (being one myself) all my life, and I'm not leaving them.
