Not liking that muffler delete based on the youtube clips of people who installed it, sounds like a violent fart. But the 5" muffler sounds pretty good.

I had a problem like that on my 2012 Sport Premium, turns out the steering rack itself was broken.

So when car and oil manufacturers say like 5000 miles or 6 months, unless your car sits in a garage never used, isn't the age of any half decent synthetic oil not really relevant? I've been driving so little I've had the same oil for probably a year and a half but with less than 3000 miles on it. I can't possibly imagine what would break down in a decent modern oil that would warrant replacing it with very low mileage just because it's at 6 months or a year old. Am I wrong?

I could see something going wrong if you let a classic car sit in a garage without the engine running for 6 months maybe, or if you used an oil made 50 years ago when they probably had much lower quality and standards.

I always thought it was the mileage restriction or 1 year.

I think the thought is that especially when it’s just sitting it can get a lot of moisture in it and that causes more engine wear.

I don’t think it’s so much the oil doesn’t perform as well but that is has contamination in it.

I would change it if I were you. I went over by a few months as well but I wasn’t driving at all.

How long are PCV valves supposed to last on these cars? I've really lost track of most maintenance on my car but the PCV valve has to be at least 20k miles and 4 years old, possibly up to 40k or higher and 5 or 6 years old. Still works fine, air goes through one way and not the other way.

Maybe I should replace it if it's cheap just for the sake of not having to care about it for another few years..

Default hesitant starting: battery? starter? alternator?

hi all,
just the last week (last three times i've started the car), i have a hesitation to my car cranking over. it's not the same as the fuel pump issue, it's almost as if the battery is dead, but then it fires up.

while driving, i looked at the ODB2 port readings on the battery and it is all over the place...dropping as low as 11.7V and going as high as 14.0V with the low number being when i'm accelerating.

when i got home, i hooked up my NOCO5 charger/maintainer and it quickly went through the different charge cycles to a flashing green which means it wasn't all that low.

so the question is: what is the cause of my starting issues? i had suspected the battery (replaced Dec 2016), but now i'm not so sure.

any thoughts/experiences/insights?

thanks!

Mine was on for at least 50k/4 years. That’s if the PO replaces it right before I got it. I think it was the original one at 107k and 8 years.

Mine wasn’t clicking when I shook it but I didn’t have any significant loss in mpg or increase in oil consumption (maybe a little of both)

It cost me $20 for the part and like 8 for a new hose and about 5 mins if you have the right tools. (Need about 18” of extensions)

Could be the alternator not charging it very well I would get it tested at autozone or the like.

It’s super easy to access on the top of the engine.

Couldn't tell you if the battery is bad, you have to use some kind of real battery tester not just a volt meter to check the condition of the battery. You can check the specific gravity of the battery acid or use one of those digital tester things that dealers and auto parts stores have. Batteries seem super hit or miss, I've heard of batteries lasting 6 months before dying and I've heard of people selling their 10 year old cars without ever replacing the battery.

I learned a while ago to turn the ignition to run/position 2 for a few seconds before starting and it's just become second nature to me after a couple years. I often had issues where the starter would have to crank for 10+ seconds until I started doing that, it seemed to often happen when the car was warm, especially partially warmed up like say after stopping for 30 minutes after a 5 minute drive, and a bit less often if the car was fully warmed up.

Could be battery, could just be whatever the starting issue seems to be with these cars.

thanks everyone. turns out there was a bad battery cell. i hooked up the battery overnight on my NOCO charger and after 12 hours, it still didn't fully charge and the charger felt warm. i started the car and drove to Autozone to use their free diagnostics but their alternator test equipment was broken. their very limited battery test suggested my battery needed to be charged which hinted to me that something was amiss. i finally bit the bullet out of convenience since i didn't have any more time to devote to it, and called AAA. they came and ran a test showing that my alternator was fine but the battery had a bad cell. i replaced the battery and now things are back to normal.

Oh, you too? I'm almost at 215K on the original. No problems with the engine but the mpg has dropped off. From full, I used to go around 200 miles at a half tank. Now it's like 170. I'm going to change it out this weekend.

Hahaha. I need an inspection this month and might actually take it to the dealer, so I'll grab part while I'm there. New tube for sure too. Hope its not baked in there too bad

Where is a good place to get 0w-20 for fairly cheap? I don't have a stable income right now so I'm trying to save money wherever possible. Are there any places that have regular sales where I could stock up? Amazon doesn't seem to be particularly cheap for most 0w-20 they have on there unless you're comparing it to like royal purple at autozone or something.

edit - OK actually amazon looks like it's way cheaper than it used to be, I was wrong, I last looked maybe a year or two ago? And it was like $25-35 for those 5 quart bottles now they have a bunch under and around $20. Seems like a good deal unless someone knows somewhere to get decent oil even cheaper.

A good, cheap oil is the Walmart 5qt Super Tech High Mileage Synthetic 0w-20 for $14.xx. I've been using it in my daughter's car for the past 80k+ miles.

If you want to stock up, wait till the mid December when Autozone has 5qt jugs for $5 or $10.

As much as I hate the place, Walmart has amazing prices on 0W-20. What I usually do is check to see which brand is running a rebate and decide whether it's worth it to put that oil in my car. Lol. I find Pennzoil and mobile one usually run about 20 to $22 at Walmart minus a $10 mail and rebate makes it amazing. I then pick up the wix oil filter off Amazon or RockAuto

Costco also has 0w-20 for about $15 per 5 quarts too, all though only makes sense if you have a membership

Sometimes manufacturers have rebates too, shop around cause the prices seem to fluctuate a lot.

Walmart is generally very cheap.

Avoid auto parts stores it’s like twice as much,

Pennzoil rebate: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/promo...il-change.html

Walmart 5qt container...(takes 5.3 I think off hand so have an extra quart around. It'll get you through 3 changes)
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pennzoil-...athlblid=L0100

Wix 57055 filter: about $8

New crush washer from dealer $.50

Synthetic oil change for under $20

Unrelated, could someone do me a favor? Can you post a picture of the wires and bulb holders for your front side market and headlight trim? Located at the very top inside edge of your stock headlight. Mine are reversed on both sides (don't remember messing that up, but in the change to all leds today -- because side marker blew and they are the worst most terrible bulbs to change in that car) I realized they were different on each side). Don't think it matters, but want to get back to correct...thanks in advance.

I do actually, I rarely use it so that would be a good excuse.

And thanks for the suggestions from everyone else.

I've replaced the PCV hoses once as they do get hard being over the engine.
I ordered the PCV through the dealership online parts store and picked it up (25% off). You pay full price buying at the dealership $26.95 vs $20.21, go figure Part # 11810AA131
I saw a video where a guy used a 19mm socket. Thought I had one but I didn't. Trying other size sockets, a 3/4" spark plug socket fit perfectly and held it in place like a spark plug. The old PCV still rattled but the spring tension was weak.

Has anyone else noticed car commercials have shifted from "Best in class safety/reliability/whatever" to "Lol horsepower and torque" the last few years or is it just me? I mean I guess the people buying new cars in the US more often than not now just want big engine make go fast and don't care about reliability or features as much, at least in my experience.
