So.. a week or two ago, the head unit glitched as it sometimes does when booting (usually just resets the "view shortcuts" option), except this time I put it into reverse fairly quickly after starting the car, and the rearview camera also glitched. For just a couple seconds, the view in the camera was straight down at my license plate. So now I'm wondering.. HOW? Does the camera actually move in its housing? Is there another camera tucked away that we usually don't see? Are there hidden camera options tucked away in a menu somewhere? Is there some kind of multi-camera view that's software locked because this isn't the highest trim level? Weird.

I believe it's cropped when it's being viewed in your screen. Your smartphone does the same thing. The lens actually captures a lot, but the software crops it down. "Zoom" is actually just cropping in, most of the time, rather than it being a separate zoom lens. So I assume the rear view camera is actually a fairly wide angle lens, but the screen can't use or doesn't need all of the viewing, so it's cropped. Your glitch probably cropped it down to a view that it doesn't normally expose since just seeing your license plate would be a useless view.

I was wondering if it might be something like that, but the angle it was showing would have to be cropped out of something like.. a full 180 degree fisheye lens, and the regular cropped view (which as previously mentioned, they adjusted the crop so you can see more of the bumper below and gate handle above) doesn't look distorted enough to be from that sort of crop.
I suppose if they had a lower view angle fisheye, they might have just angled it downward a bit since the camera is recessed below the gate handle anyway and it'd be a blocked view. Maybe the area they typically crop is from the upper portion of the overall image? |
