So I'm getting a new amp, which I doubt will solve the software issues, unless somehow there's an electrical problem shorting out the head unit. If that's the case, I don't know that the amp would be the culprit. The feedback and that I've been getting are hopefully amp related. Van Bortel has reported a number of issues on these, so hopefully Subaru will come out with an update, soon.

I'll report back next week or whenever my new amp goes in!

I will say I'm glad VBS is trying something, and not just documenting and seeing what happens. Also, they told me the amps are listed by Subaru as different from the 16s, but look identical. They're waiting on confirmation.

My week old Sport (w/ Tech package) has also had problems with the Infotainment system. The screen is usually black/non-responsive, with the white button lettering below either solid or flashing (which is really annoying).
Like others above, I have also noticed that it is more likely to work if the car is "warm" (has been running awhile) -- no matter the outside temp. So, first thing in the a.m. the probability of it working is almost zero. After travelling a while (>15min?) sometimes I can get it to work by re-starting or switching into reverse (to trigger the camera).
The dealer says it is a software issue and that the "radio" (I assume entire head unit???) is from a new supplier (Harman-Kardon) this year vs earlier years (maybe Panasonic?). I'm not sure about the s/w diagnosis given the pattern... They did a reset which involved disconnecting the battery which did nothing.
I joined this forum to try to get/share info about this. Would welcome thoughts as to how best to get Subaru to fix this fast... Thx

You're aware that amplifying the stock head unit is the biggest waste of money possible?

Hey look, everyone! It's drpoop here to post something negative about an issue he clearly doesn't understand!

SHOCKING.

I'm talking about an Impreza with the Harmon Kardon setup. Let me help you out here, it COMES with an amp. Mine is being replaced.

Quit trolling the 17 threads, you don't own one, therefore your opinion is irrelevant.

Out of curiosity though, what temp ranges are we talking about ? I see you're in Canada, so I'm guessing it's pretty chilly on most startups. I'm just curious if anyone in warm climates is having zero issues, and it's a cold thing. I haven't seen anything official from Subaru yet, I'm just doing my own fact finding so I can get an idea.

Hey there man, looks like we have the same exact problem. I'm taking my car in on Monday, January 30 to have it looked at. The Service Rep told me he's going to disconnect and reconnect the head unit and perform a hard reset (whatever that means). He did say they did this on another person's car and it worked out, so fingers crossed.

And yeah, you're right it's about the warmth of the car. Weather has been slightly warmer around my area and it still does not work when I start the car up in the morning after 10 or 12 hours of it off.

Thanks for the replies...

@H.M.: It's been a mild winter here so we're talking -2 to +5 Celsius, call it 30-40F. So, not really that cold. Shirt sleeve weather for us canucks!
Seriously, the blue temp light is on when I start up but goes off in 5-10 minutes of driving. I'll try to make note of actual temps and post later. I drove for 10km/5mi or so after work (dead system) and parked for an errand. Immediately re-started - no luck w/ system. When I came back out from my errand (30min?) the system worked. Maybe it needs to have a full reset in there too -- it has that 1min welcome light auto-off routine going on. Maybe that's a factor???

@Smart: The reset sounds like what they did last weekend for me which had no lasting effect. I hope yours goes better...

The dealer says they understand that H-K believes it is a s/w problem. Maybe so, but this apparent correlation with temperatures seems like h/w to me. I see no reason why the head-unit would have a sensor input re temp of any kind??? Is there anything else it receives as an input which simple folks like me would see as temp?

BTW, I'm thinking of sending Subaru a picture of a portable radio duct-taped to the console with a comment "How to make an Impreza radio work". Whaddya think - too soon?!?

To the people who've had issues with their infotainment units, when did the problems start? Soon after you picked up the car from the dealer? Days or weeks after? I'm curious because my Impreza sport is being delivered on Saturday and wondering if I should try the radio a few times before I drive the car off the lot. Although where I'm picking it up the temps will be in the high 30s/low 40s so maybe it won't be affected by the "cold" startup issue this weekend.

Almost immediately, my issues are touch and go. I'm sure Subaru will come up with a fix, just might be awhile. I'd check it out and at least get it documented before you leave if you notice issues.

Hi Jaccardi8. Immediate. They delayed my pickup by one night because the salesguy noticed the problem when he drove it out of the back. Can you pick yours up first thing in the a.m.? Might make a tougher test... good luck...

Maybe the head unit mishandles the ambient temperature reading.

I'd try faking or disabling the ambient temp sensor in the front bumper.

Or it could be that most here are opting for the Sport, because slight performance edge with brakes, 18" wheels and Active Torque Vectoring.

I have a 16 base model that keeps changing stations when I'm listening to the radio and skipping tracks on CDs. Does it about once every 10-15 minutes. Anybody else experienced that?

So is this a wide spread problem ?

And if it is, what has been the past response from Subaru, do they usually address this stuff like this or SOL for new platform buyers

I've got a limited with all of these issues. Thought that the head unit was behaving lately but it came up with a new issue today - worked for 10 seconds and then as soon as I put the car in drive (after reversing), it turned off and stayed off. Hadn't seen that yet.

Bringing the car to the dealer on Feb 3 and Subaru says they will be in touch with the dealer as well, but I don't have high hopes for them figuring this out without a software update.

Whenever they figure out what the issue is, they'll issue a TSB for it, and you'll have to bring your car in to get the fix.

Something about the 2017 is attracting the most cynical people in the world. Or it's just a bunch of kids that don't understand how warranties work. Not sure.

@KC: You referred to "Sport" as having 18" wheels. I think the model names are confusingly different between US & CA. Mine is called "Sport" but has 17" rims and no Active Torque Vectoring. It is #3 of 4 trim levels. Top level here is called "Sport-tech", which is independent of whether or not you have the "tech package" (e.g. EyeSight). Dealer was confused too!

Odd, Canada usually has better feature sets on cars than the US.

Head units are typically tied into the CAN bus. If the manufacturer claims "software issue" in cold weather, there's a chance it's using an external temperature input.
