I say the driver will make the car spin, regardless of sway bar size! Running an 18mm or 20mm should not give anyone any problems unless there trying to do things they shouldn't. IMHO

Well, the 18mm bar is good for the stock suspension as it does neutralize quite a bit. One thing you have to remember is that a car CAN have both understeer and oversteer. That's the case with the 20 mm. Under acceleration in less than perfect traction, it understeers. Under deceleration in less than perfect traction, it oversteers. The difference between the two is that the 18mm is nearly impossible to cause oversteer, unless you do some tricking braking maneuvers.

But there's no real answer to all possible situations. On different surfaces, different bars will have different effects. I have an 18mm bar on my stock suspension, and on snow/ice, it oversteers LIKE MAD. When taking corners, the rear end will swing around before you know it and if you don't correct VERY QUICKLY, you'll 360 in no time. Even when accelerating from a stop on snow/ice, the rear end still swings out a little. It happens pretty fast, and I've bounced off a curb or two from a traffic light because of it.

In the dirt though, it's almost impossible to oversteer. And on pavement, it has a slight understeer 95% of the time, which is generally preferrable for daily driving.

I have a 20 mm bar on a stock suspension, and I can oversteer on dirt like crazy - feels good that way.

I can hardly make it oversteer on pavement, but there was one time at night when I was surprised by a deer and braked quickly and swerved at the same time and the rear kicked out in an unexpected, though not insurmountable, way.

Can spin it like a top on ice, but I doubt that has anything to do with the bar.

I believe the "spin like a top on ice" has a lot to do with the bar. I know that with the stock bar (some say 13mm, some say 15mm????), I could NOT get the rear end around on ice. It would just go straight. Really straight. Like a FWD car.

Question Sway Bar

i have read a response from a impreza driver, who talks about 18mm or 20mm sway bar. He said the stock (13mm) sway causes understeer, so changing 18mm or 20mm can solve the porblem. At the same time, he also said that if the car, with 18mm or 20mm sway bar, is under high cornering, the car will spin if we give up acceleration or step back from the gas. I wonder if this is true or not. If so, what is the speed will cause this happen? What is the limit?

thank you all.....

JP This really depends on your intentions with the car.

If it's your daily driver and you don't plan any suspension upgrades and do not attend autocross. Then I think the 18mm is the ticket.

If you plan to make your car into a handling monster, and or take part in autocrosses then I would suggest the whiteline adjustable sway bar. That way you can try 18mm then move on up!
