Getting the CEL and other light combo
I have been getting the CEL Cruise Brake combo of lights in my 2013 Legacy. It has 160k miles, I swapped out the thermostat and the temp sensor. It's now showing p0117 and p0118 and stating permanent on the diagnostic tool. Any ideas or has anyone had this happened and resolved it? Otherwise it's running super smoothly. Thank you for any input or insight

What does your temp gauge read?
- OR - Is the coolant warning light flashing? What color? Did you look at the coolant temp value the ECM reads when you pulled codes? Without further diagnostic information I would start by: Checking connectors at the temp sensor and the big grey connector on the rear left of engine - make sure they are tight and locked. Look for chewed wires on the engine harness - is there any rodent crap under the hood? |

No temp gauge but it will flash blue and red
All connections look goof and no signs of rodents or critters. The wires appear in good shape. The car is currently running excellent but not sure what's going on with the lights. I tried to disconnect the battery to reset the ecu but it still is reading permanent p0117 and permanent p0118. Any ideas? And thank you again for any insight into this |

You have an odd issue - one code is for an open wire on the sensor, the other code is for a shorted wire on the sensor. To have both is odd unless the wiring is messed up or you have the wrong/defective sensor.
It would be nice to know what the ECM sees from the sensor. Do you have access to a scan tool that will read ECM data? If you unplug the sensor, then reset the ECM what code(s) do you get? What does the gauge and lights do. Did you put a Subaru sensor or aftermarket sensor in? |

Been a while since I have been able to work on this but it's an aftermarket sensor. I have changed the water pump, thermostat, and timing belt but the issue is still going on with all the same lights. I did notice that the radiator remains ice cold when the car heats up and it sounds almost like a boiling tea kettle. I reached out too two subaru dealers here and got completely different thoughts. Dealer 1 said 100% head gaskets, Dealer 2 said that the head gaskets on a 12-13 very rarely failed which I should say I have never heard before if anything I have heard all boxer motors have this issue. Any insight or information would be greatly appreciated

Unplug the sensor and see if grounded wire code goes away. Check for resistance to ground on the other wire/s. I’d look at clt value while moving that wire around

So unplugged and reset the ems, still getting P0118, P0118 permanent and P0117 permanent just not the regular P0117. Also still getting all of the dash Christmas tree and noticed that the lower hose to the radiator is cold still (has a new pump and thermostat) and the car still is running well. If I pushed it harder or further I'm sure the radiator reservoir would have had an over flow.. any ideas? Is it head gasket time?
