Question Automatic to Manual...$1000

Hey I heard from my friend that a couple (keyword "couple") of his friends payed some shop in Vancouver $1000 to have the transmission changed from Auto to Manual. No problems, no maintenance...

Wondering if you guys have heard of the place... if not I'll try to get the name of the shop!

Also, if I do a transmission change... will it void my warranty?

Costs more than $1000 to do a tranny swap. Believe me, I've looked into the possibility of it.

Question

$1000 are u taking about only labor? or only parts?

even for an old car it is pretty hard to get a deal at $1000....nothing is impossible though....

i know a guy spent $2500 to swap his tranny and another guy spent $4k to get that done at BMW dealer!!! (that was a 9k tranny and BMW even offers warranty!!!)

and for sure ur warranty will be gone....unless the dealer is willing to do it....

Should have saved the initial surcharge of ~$1000 with the automatic and gone with a 5-speed instead! You not only paid $1000 dollars for the auto, but another $1000 to put in a new tranny -- that's assuming that the total cost for a 5-speed and installation is 1k! Total "approximate" cost - 2k!
LaterZ!

I could see install cost of $1000 (which would still be expensive) but not for install plus tranny. No Way!! My guess would be a used Subie tranny is going to run you $2k plus $750 for labout to install. You may be able to sell the auto afterwards to someone to offset the cost to do the swap.

hehee Kent... actually I wasn't really planning on doing a swap... even if I did it would be behind my parent's back... cause they don't want me to drive a manual car after my Vr6 incident hehe...

Anyway yeah, I just thought it was interesting so that's whyI posted it... do you guys still want some info on it though? maybe for future references?

Sure keep us posted. If its true that we can do tranny swaps for a $1000 I wouldn't mind having that bit of info.

Orbiter- we're not gonna go through this crap again are we? Some of us have family reasons as to why we have auto...not everyone of us willingly chose an auto.

markus: $1000 was only my "estimate" as i was once being told to modify a 91 Integra GS from AT to MT costs about $900...(that goes by $60/hr)
i dunno if that's the cheapest or that's the more expensive quotes from other shop or not...
i would never think to swap AT to MT...
but $1k is pretty attractive...hehe...

It will definitely void your warranty hands down unless the dealer is willing to do it and can confirm it will not, also a tranny swap for $1000 seems unrealistic TO ME, is that just labor or parts? Having a swap done is a lot more than just a tranny itself, you need a whole new gearbox, run the new linkage, install a clutch pedal, etc... think about it like this, you take your car to a shop to have your tranny fixed(say it’s your linkage or slave cylinder or anything) and they say it’ll take a couple days, after just those couple days you’ve already racked up over 1k in labor to fix the tranny, just to fix the one thing, you’re talking about swapping everything over and then adding more to just the swap itself, that’s more than $1000 if you want it done properly. But hey if they can do it and your friends are sure then go for it, good luck!

I had a discussion with Brian at iWire about this when I was looking for a Forester XT. He says that on the newer vehicles, the transmission wiring is much more integrated than back when this thread started. Even mid 2000s vehicles would require extensive wiring modifications to do an AT to MT conversion.
