Professional Website Builders
Long story short, the lady is finished all her post doc psychology hours and will likely take her board certs for licensing in September. Neither of us know how to build a site nor do we have time and energy to do it and maintain it. I’ll be funding likely the entirety of getting her practice going and want someone / a company to professionally build it and have her site appear at the top of google search (not ad) for Utah.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? What does a professional site creation and maintenance cost? Anything else I should know? Gracias

SEO is a dark art and you will pay tens of thousands of dollars for anyone decent. You could kill two birds with one stone and look for a digital agency that can handle branding, website, SEO and so on but it will be spendy. |

you don't need some "professionally built and maintained" website for a private therapy website |

I built one for my wife with Wix. I'm dumb. It looks fine. If you're not dumb it should be even easier. Really doesn't take all that long either.

Have you ever had problems with domain name registrars?
I'm now choosing where it is more profitable to register domain names. I found quite cheap prices. But I don't know if such registrars can be trusted. What do you think about this? |

Ugh...have had terrible experiences hiring people to build sites.
Thousands of $$$ that we might as well have lit on fire and tossed into a gasoline soaked car parked in the attached garage and then gone inside, taken some opioids and guzzled liquor till we passed out. First guy: Built everything, I mean everything as an image. The site never returned a single piece of text. Ever. It was slow to load and images didn't rescale well in different browsers so it looked like azz. I've seen better sites done in Powerpoint 2003 and saved as HTML. My wife basically found a hosting site and redid the entire thing from scratch herself. Luckily it's not a complex site. List name, contact info, a few links to other relatively static pages, etc. Years later when Google started downgrading results for sites which weren't mobile optimized we were forced to do something else. 2nd Guy: She interviewed a bunch of people, and finally picked one that didn't seem like an idiot. He worked it for a couple of months. My wife wasn't 100% happy with the results, but okay, fine. Then we realized he'd done everything in Wordpress and stuff wasn't easily tweaked without it. About a week into going "live" with site 2.0, it started acting weird, and then it got ransomwared. Some 3rd party Wordpress plugin the guy had used got hacked. So we were left with an unusable site and a guy who wouldn't return a single call once he realized he f**ked up. Fortunately my wife had made a backup of everything, however, re-uploading everything was going to result in the same thing happening and we had no way to edit it to get rid of the plugin. Hosting site said they'd fix it for a fee. But then we were left with an broken site. My wife stayed up for nearly 60 hrs straight furiously re-architecting the entire thing by hand enough to get something working. I think it took her another month or so of working on it to finally get everything the way she wanted again. Sooo...we're never doing that again. Hell, I've been trying to get her to get on the beta for OpenAI GPT-3 so all she has to do is type what she wants the site to do and the AI builds the page for her. Site hosting...some of them are really good until they either go belly up, or grow so big they start doing shady isht with fees and hope you have them on autopay and don't notice. So we end up having to shop around and change every 2-3 years to find a decent one that isn't too pricey. Last edited by f4phantomii; 04-22-2021 at 10:09 PM. |

Ugh that sounds brutal. Doing everything as an image? Jeebus, we joke about that at work just for ****s and giggles, but to hear of someone actually doing it. @_@
And I do find WordPress "developers" tend to rely on too many plugins. Like way too many and it becomes a dependency and maintenance nightmare. We do some WordPress at my work, and I always stress to use as little plugins as possible. What about using site builder services like https://www.squarespace.com/ ? It's great if your design is not very custom but there are definitely cons too: * vendor lock in thus it might be hard to move away later * might cost more long term vs self-hosting (but at the same time, you don't have to worry about hosting) But I've heard great things about them. |

The same situation happened before with another registrar, then my domains were blocked immediately. So choose carefully. Last edited by Dapulin; 05-04-2021 at 02:53 PM. |
