Need light 17" that look good
I'm looking for a nice looking set of 6 or 7 spoke rims that are good looking AND light. I've been looking all over and haven't found what I really want yet.
I bought some Motegi Racing MR7's which weigh in at a rather hefty 24.5 pounds a piece, and wrapped them with Falken FK 451 225/45/17 - for a grand total weight of 50 pounds per tire/rim. The original stock 16" rims/tires weigh in at only 38 pounds. That's 12 pounds of rotational mass per tire that my poor little 'rex has to spin now - and it doesn't sound like much till you figure that number x 4 for a total of 48 pounds of increased mass. Maybe that increase wouldn't be noticed by a 2 wheel drive, but awd sure does. I drove this combo for 1 day (after paying for them at a local tire shop that day) and noticed that the car was noticeably lagging beyond 1st gear - obviously due to the additional mass. I was skeptical that my backside accelerometer was detecting a decrease in speed, but after swapping them back out for the stock 16's, I was sure that it was DEFINITELY slower. I spoke to a supposed "drag racing" Mitsubishi Eclipse driver who swore weight wouldn't matter (according to his experiences) and so didn't care so much about weight when purchasing my rims. I also know that the weight of the tire itself weighs in on the equation, and need to take into account my selection there as well. Does anyone have a suggestion on a manufacturer with rims that are decent looking, have weight calculations per rim, and don't cost $1,000 a piece? My selection of the Falkens was based solely off suggestion by the shop - I wanted a tire that would be so-so in snow that might be incurred on my travels. Basically, I want something that is at least close to the weight of the stock 16's @ 38 lbs. so that I don't have to compensate by tuning up the engine even more to correct for the noticeable difference. Anyone else with my experience? Am I crazy? Do I have a lead foot? (yes! yes!!) Your comments are appreciated.

Volk Racing wheels.
I am selling my Volk Racing TE37k 17x7.5 +48mm w/ 215/45/17 Bridgestone RE730 tires. they are 6 spoke, about 14lbs a piece, and forged! The retail price for these type wheels is about $450-550 each, depending on size. But I am asking $1500 w/o tires or $1750 w/ tires. (you pay shipping) PM me if you are interested. Cal |

what about rota?
Did I read in a few previous posts that the Rota Attack 17x7's were pretty lightweight? I tire of the 5 spoke genre, but they aren't too bad. Anyone with specific specs on them? I'd really hate to drop 500 a piece for rims .. something lower would be nice!
eh? |

Another option is the SSR Competition, the 17x7.5 weighs 12.9 pounds each.

Rota Subzeros are also pretty light in the 17x7.5 size. Not quite as light at the SSR's, but at less than half the price, you can probably live with another pound. The only problem is that they're 5-spoke, but I think they're one of the better looking wheels out there. And they're available in a range of colors: white, silver, bronze, gray, anthracite

Rotas are a great value.
SSR Competitions are super light, but expensive and delicte. Superlegerras are also a very nice wheel, a bit less expensive and less delicate than the SSRs The superlegerras are only 7inches wide though, while rotas can be had in 7.5inch wide form, as can SSR Competitions |

bending
Has anyone had issues with a "light" rim bending or getting damaged? Obviously nothing is going to withstand a "curbing" .. but just interested to know if it is an issue where you creep over every little bump and dip.
I'm gentle ... but I am no angel when I drive. |

tough locating
I'd did a brief search via google for vendors for Rota's and came up short. Anyone with suggestions on who may have some decent prices?

I bent an SSR on a bad pothole. That was with my tires at 40psi too. I have hit potholes about that bad with the stock rims and they were fine. |

iflybyu,
I put plenty of street miles on the SSR Competitions, but I guess there aren't that many potholes here in North Texas, compared to some other parts of the country. I would love it if I could find a 5-spoke version rather than 6-spokes, from a "looks" standpoint (and gee it might even save a little bit more weight, too). If you look at the lightest wheels from high end folks like Porsche and Ferrari, you'll still see them in the 5-spoke design. GoodFinder |

iflybyu,
i spent quite a bit of time looking, and i ended up settling on 17" rota subzeros w/ falken tires. based on 1) price 2) weight and 3) looks... i was worried about the price being TOO cheap, but they have held up so far with no complaints. i am from upstate ny, and live in pa...so i see some rough roads. also just autocrossed them with no problems...they must be the best value for wheels, while still being performance minded. oh yeah...i also wanted a wider tire. that was another reason i leaned towards rotas...good luck. kevin |

I just ordered for BBS 17x7 wheels from tirerack, with Sumitomo HTR+ tires. These are not the BBS wheels that you get from Subaru dealers. These weigh around 16.5lbs, which are the same weight as the stock 16x6.5 rims.

Bent rims
suck - I destroyed two rims on a friends VW Corrado by drifting into a 5 inch curb. The curb won - the suspension and rims lost.
I'm suprised that the Rota's are reasonable in price I guess - although I don't know how much exactly they cost (or where to acquire them). I still need to pout to the local shop and see if they'll return these Motegi's .. I think the Falkens are ok, but still a bit concerned about overall weight increase. It's kind of stupid to have to tweak the engine performance to compensate for rims/tires. I guess it's understandable that a five spoke is strong .. I suppose I may give in and go for a set .. I'll go ahead and apologize to anyone else who already has them for being a "copycat" .. although my 'rex has several things that set it apart from any other. |

I got a set of 17 x 7.5 Rota Attacks from Revolution Motorsports about 2 weeks ago. Great price, fast delivery.
I'm finally getting 215-45-17Toyo T1S tires on this week; havent had time to get it done earlier. This tire seems like the lightest of the performance tires at 20.1lbs, and gets rave reviews for it's wet and dry handling, and treadwear. Pricey tire, but the wheel/tire combo totals CDN $2300=USD$1500, total weight=35.6lb, over 2lbs lighter than stock. My feeble little OBS needs all the help it can get |

I drive like a fool....
I am a fool.....lol... The only problem with my 17" SSR Comps has been getting mud and whatnot stufed in the(easy to clean!!!!) inside of the rim, and the out of ballance that that creates...... I had a cop follow my tracks in mud/dirt, for 7-8 miles, and 'scold' me for my "exuberant" driving.........LMAO!!!! I haven't bent 'em yet.....I'll let you know!!!! |
