Lift gate story. We're at ground station prepping for a test. A contractor had a rack of equipment shipped via FedEx Custom Critical. As they were unloading it, it rolled off the lift gate! I don't want to guess the value of the equipment in that rack...probably $500k minimum.

Yeah Covid, Real Estate agent gave us a sales estimate for our place up 25% in the last year. The county hasn't had more than a few dozen Covid cases, and single digits for most of the last year.

...because they're not friendly...

15 days until closing. Going to give the internet and utility companies a call/sign up for the switchover via their websites tomorrow.

NG, electric, water (automatic) switchovers all set up.

Internet service has an unexpected hitch. The current owners have CenturyLink DSL. Their availability tool showed 60 Mbps service available when I checked a few months ago.

Now it shows no availability. I thus called their customer support people to see if it is some address lookup snafu, and it’s not. Instead they have a certain amount of bandwidth allocated to the neighborhood and they’re at the cap.

Until someone else drops their service I thus can’t sign up for internet service! In theory I can time it with the current owners, I guess. In reality I’ll be checking their website every day to see when it lets me through—the automatic gatekeeper for that was something the phone reps couldn’t get around either.

Hmmm.

Hope they don't let more people subscribe without working on that infrastructure, otherwise reading films will be like using a dial-up

At least you can read after midnight when the neighborhood bandwidth will be all yours.

Maybe Starlink for internet?

Yeah, I’ll try refreshing their website daily until closing, then will relent and go with some sort of satellite service until DSL is available once more. Blech.

The local cable provider for our "away" house showed availability...until I actually ordered and they canceled a day later stating there was no service available. It's long-range WiFi for us.

And for some reason I keep reading this thread title as "mountain horse". I have no clue why

My 8 year old would be thrilled with a mountain horse.

Looks like I have two local long-range WiFi outfits; or HughesNet or Viasat for satellite. Pricing and speeds are suboptimal.

I contacted my realtor to ask to coordinate CenturyLink account handover with the current owners, as that’d be far better.

You might be better getting a mobile hotspot to use cell network than a satellite internet setup. The hughesnet stuff is pretty pricy last I looked.

Yeah, all those options seem pretty terrible. One dark horse is a local coop, Slopeside Internet Service. They’re a long range WiFi deal. No idea on their pricing but this is somewhat promising with that last clause:

Quote:
- FYI We should have no trouble at all providing services at that address as we have good coverage in that area.

- We offer speeds from 5 to 40 Mbps.. and our top speeds will be increasing greatly too later this summer.
I may pick up a Verizon Jetpack 8800L and an extra Visible line (which will take me from $70/mo for two lines to $90 for 3 on party line billing), as Reddit suggests it works just fine by changing the APN.

I still hope that the CenturyLink account switchover will somehow happen +/- me refreshing that availability page furiously, but for the device cost + $20/mo seems to make sense as a backup at least.

You don't necessarily need a jetpack. I would hop on ebay and look for a Cradlepoint router. IMHO much better than a hotspot if you end up needing to use for an extended period. Should be able to get one for under $100.

The long range wifi isn't bad assuming the provider knows what they're doing. We have 20/10 service which runs $55 a month. More than adequate for our needs.

What's the advantage of the cradlepoint over a jetpack? You can get used jetpacks on Ebay for not much as well.

Cradlepoint is a real router and the wifi is good enough that it should cover an average home. Or you can simply plug your mesh setup into it's ethernet port, etc.

The cell modem also has large antennas so if the signal isn't optimal it will help too. This is an older model but it works fine. Cell modem is on the right side, wifi antennas on the left.

The real problem is since he's going to be renting it out you're going to burn through bandwidth real quick...and it ain't cheap. My kids will burn through 15 gigs in 3-4 days

Ahh, we had some in a previous unit and didn't know the setup of them. We also had jetpacks. How do you connect those with your cell plan/ service?

I'm also on Verizon...I just ordered a SIM for it and it's another line on the account (same as adding a Jetpack).

EDIT: Forgot you can also configure a Cradlepoint to serve as a fallback connection if your main connection fails.

Ok, I placed a bid on this. Conflicting information on whether it'll actually work with Visible. Shall be some playing around with it.

Time to order a SIM as well.

looks like I'll need to mess with the modem's firmware a bit:

https://ltehacks.com/viewtopic.php?t=742

setup instructions (subbing out Visible's APN, etc)

Good point.

A bunch of teenagers on social media can destroy your monthly limit pretty quickly.

Make sure (I am sure you will) that you set up a separate network for the guests, and change the password of your router.

I have not yet used an AirBnB/VRBO where they changed their password on the router. A nefarious tenant could make your life difficult.

I'll change the password, sure, but what would a separate guest network get me? I'm not going to have my own hardware besides maybe a TV on the network when I'm not there.

If I'm forced to use cell service it'll be through Visible. They're technically unlimited-probably throttle at some point.

I’ll definitely speed test it here and up there if/when I get the APN settings right for Visible.

I still have some hope the CenturyLink handoff for 60 Mbps DSL service will happen between the current owners and me, but as a fallback expensive direct WiFi at 40 Mbps with the promise of higher speeds later in the summer will do, I guess.

Hmph. I thought this was close enough to civilization to not have these issues.

- not counting bonuses, which should cover PITI for the year and then some even if month to month otherwise is tight
- not counting potential rental income
- with very low interest rate student loans still ticking away
- with the 403(b) loan repayment accounted for

Add in some rental income, fast forward a few years to post-self-loan and -student-loan repayment over, and I should be just fine. Just makes me a bit nervous now to stretch.
Financial update, 12 days from closing:

- have not dialed down any of my retirement contributions (401(a) is mandatory, elective 403(b) and 457(b) as before)

- 403(b) loan repayment for that $50k I borrowed from myself has started already since I had to disburse in March to prove the funds' existence to the bank's satisfaction

- half year bonus hitting my account in a few days will let me re-plump my taxable account to over $100k, which should give sufficient mental headroom for running in the red in any particular month with these new expenses

- I'll definitely take out a bit more debt to fund the ~$25k deck redo to keep that buffer in the taxable account at a healthy level, probably HELOC on my Denver house? (I was hoping to put off the decks for a year or three but the water intrusion from the crap flashing job forces my hand for this summer)

So even if rental income turns out to be a bust I'll be fine. Just closer to the edge than I usually run for sure!

Internet mini-saga updates:

Still no luck on CenturyLink's site to sign up for DSL.

The eBayed CradlePoint MBR1400 is slated to arrive this Friday. Its associated Visible SIM arrived yesterday. I activated it and its account on my iPhone, got it set up with Party Line billing (so now at $90/mo for three lines from $70/mo for two lines before), and then swapped back to my real-number SIM without issue.

I've got the APN settings from other posters who claim to have gotten similar non-approved devices to work on Visible. The settings boil down to these 4 APNs:

I also chatted with the people (person?!) at Slopeside Internet. They're a local long range WiFi place with gigabit fiber connection(s) at Fraser and several repeater (?) towers in the local neighborhoods. The Mountain House is apparently close to one such tower.

Slopeside certainly doesn't advertise their wares. Their site just has a logo, a phone number, and an email address. From speaking with the dude on the phone what I'll be able to sign up for now is 40 Mbps service @ $95/mo or so. Later in the summer when they get equipment upgrades they anticipate offering up to 100 Mbps service at an unknown correspondingly higher price.

The Slopeside dude also mentioned that CenturyLink DSL service in the area isn't thought of favorably, likely because they're oversubscribed for their shared bandwidth. He was surprised to hear that CenturyLink wasn't letting additional customers in the neighborhood sign up, and guessed that was because some local heavy hitters in the neighborhood had complained about the level of service.

Cliffs Notes: The Mountain House shall have internet services when all has been said and done. It'll have Visible LTE tethered to the CradlePoint as a backup, assuming the APN settings work, and I'll most likely be using a local long range WiFi outfit as the main connection.

Ok, peanut gallery:

What should the official Vacasa-kosher name of the Mountain House be?
