2012 Can't turn off hill assist???
I'll attempt not to rant too much about how passionately Ihate hill assist. Been searching and trying methods of disabling it for a while now, and nothing I've tried works. I finally got fed up last time I had to parallel park on a hill (I don't need reverse if you'll just LET ME ROLL BACKWARD PLEASE!!!) and called the local Subie stealership. The tech legit told me it was impossible to disable hill assist in the "older" model Imprezas/XVs.
Somebody please tell me that you know a work around! rant/ Not having the option to disable this "feature" is legit dangerous! Beyond the parallel parking on a hill tedium, I can't teach anyone how to drive a stick on this thing (imagine them driving a different manual car one day and coming to a stoplight on a steep hill, not even thinking about it cuz they learned on a car with hill assist....stall, honk, crunch)! /rant (My attempt to not rant failed. Sorry) ~Kevin (Edit2: Oh, also my apologies if this isn't the right spot for this thread. I put it here as, to my knowledge, no vehicles with EJ's/FA's have this issue. Of course feel free to relocate it as needed.)

Have you followed the procedure outlined in your Owners Manual on pages 7-34 through 7-37? Too much info to quote here, but if you no longer have the manual try this

It was so much easier on my '90 Legacy Wagon - there was a cable that paralleled the accelerator cable, and loosening it deactivated the system permanently. T least they thought to document the procedure to deactivate the electronic nanny. I'm getting really tired of systems designed to compensate for clueless operators. Hands-off parallel parking? Really???

Welp guess who feels like an idiot now. This guy. I definitely tried the owners manual method a couple months ago, and couldn't get it to work. Of course this time it worked...after the 5th try Not sure what I did wrong the when I tried it a back in Sept. My guess is I either missed the part about the parking brake needing to be on (which may or may not matter...I'll test that later), or I just didn't hold the button long enough my first 13 attempts at doing this method (when it says "hold the VDC button for several seconds" it mean 30+ seconds). Obviously I'm a master of reading/following instructions to the letter
I c/p the instructions below to save anyone like me the time of scrolling the owners manual. Many thanks for the info y'all! Quote:
