Default CA: Looking for someone to talk to about BAR approved Engine change/swap process

Hi,

I am looking to talk to someone about the CA BAR engine change/swap process.

I can read, I can search and I generally understand what is required but the questions I have are more... nuanced

The two main questions are to in the two model years that I am looking at for my "change/swap candidate" there was not manual transmission option.

  • If I show up to the Ref swap completed with all related smog equipment from the "donor", but with a manual transmission is that going to be an fail automatically? Or am I going to have to make it automatic to get a BAR sticker then swap to manual later.

  • If the manual trans is not already an automatic fail, if I show up to the Ref with a manual transmission and all the Auto Trans trouble codes in the ROM permanently disabled, is that an fail even if the OBD readiness monitors for smog check are on(OK).

Have you consulted with Brian at iWire on this?

I don't think BAR cares what trans is in it, Just the engine and supporting smog gear: engine needs to be same year or newer, and any smog equipment needs to be transferred from the donor car to your car if it's different.

I'm in the same boat, planning and well into a 02 bugeye NA with 3.0L H6 EZ30 from a 2001 LLBean. Don't know whether to pull the trigger now or wait until Feb when the smog is due and swap after that...

I have not, I may reach out to him.

I have had conversations with a ref at this point. Yes, the transmission has to be there for OBD2 cars. So what that means is if your donor never had a manual option you can not have a manual at the time of inspection. Most likely the automatic will have electrical connections not present in the manual which could cause CELs. You cannot turn off these CELs because the ecu rom check sum will no longer match and you have to provide proof of that to them at the time of swap inspection. Yes, they are going require you to produce a statement from basically a dealership service saying they verify the rom loaded on the vehicle and the checksum is correct for the rom. Their machines can't verify the rom file from what I was told.

You want to put a 01 in to a 02? That's a hard no and pretty clear already.

Also, from what I understand you basically have to own the donor and provide proof that you owned it, meaning you can't cobble something together from the junkyards, and then grab a vin from the junkyard.

I am one step closer but still very far away. I have acquired a same model year donor, stripped it for parts and sent the frame to the scrap yard, so I have my proof for chain of custody.

The motor's the same from 2001-2004. Worst case scenario I have a donor motor from a junkyard 2002 with paperwork that went in the LLBean car for my friend to use. I have transmissions/ECUs/TCUs for both.

They don’t care about “generations” of equipment, they care about the VIN of the donor. There are variations of smog equipment through out the years. For example 2006 STi mid year got the air pump, so if you were claiming a late 06 STi and didn’t have the air pump or correct heads too accept an air pump that might fail you as well.

So, I’m not sure what paperwork you have, you may want to call them and ask you need before you start. I have a full title, so I didn’t ask about other proof of chain of custody.

for a carb swap you need to have all the paper work that proves all the stuff you have came from a car that is newer than the chassis you are using. also it is easier but more expensive to buy whole wrecked car than it is to try to piece together all the stuff. I was talking to a buddy of mine that works for the BAR and he said that if there is a model and year of the car car you are swaping came with that engine that you dont need to have a carb plate. So basically ifyou ahve a 2005 and you want to put a 2005 sti it is perfectly legal. but yeah you might want to look into that
