Default Tranny fluid in WRX 5-speed

I was planning on changing my WRX tranny fluid this weekend and was wondering if any type of 75w90 would be fine? I want to go with something a little thicker then the brown water thats in it now. Might go with redline or something.

Thanks. BTW, how many quarts does the stock WRX tranny hold?

Tranny holds 3.7qts I believe. If you look in the Transmission forum you will find much more info on this. There are some oils that work better than others so do a search and find out what will work best for you.

I just changed mine; www.f1carsets.com/wrx (You might want to get something else than Mobil1!)

Thanks for the webpage, that really helps. I think it IS 3.7 qts, because I read that somewhere else. What's wrong with Mobil 1? I was probably going to go cheap, no use in paying $40 for RedLine right now. Do I have to change the rear diff. fluid too?

for the trans: 3.7qts
rear diff: .7qts

i used 75w90ns in the trans and
i used 75w90 in the rear diff.

both torque to about 30 ft/lbs give or take.

I dont have any issues with my trans or rear diff as of yet, and ive had it in there for about 9,000 miles.

good luck

I used Royal purple in the tranny and rear diff. Been in there for about 2000 miles now. Tranny does not make the decel rattle box noise at all and is much easier to shift. Gear shift lever almost seems to light now. Big difference. Royal purple has a Shock addative but it is safe to use in the rear diff. Available at any Napa auto parts store. Get 5 Q's and you will have plenty. Tranny takes 3.5 and diff took about .6 with some run off.

Tranny is easy. Drop the lower bolt and drain fluid.

Clean metal shavings off of magnetic drain plug.

Insert hose into dip stick and pour in about .5 Q's. This lets clean fluid remove any metal shavings that may be sitting on the bottom of the tranny case.

Put drain plug back in.

Fill with 3 q's and check. Start car and let idle for a moment. Recheck and top off. Mine took 3.5 total.

Rear is easy.. Remove bottom plug.

Remove top plug.

Squirt oil in to clean out old oil and metal.

Put the bottom plug in. fill through top plug until there is run off.

Put top plug in and TRQ.

Redline 75w90ns works well in the tranny and diff. I don't think you can use MT-90 as it is only GL-4 rated, not the required GL-5.

What should I do if I just go with a plain old normal Mobil 1 or whatever instead of Redline? Just can't afford $8/bottle+shipping now.

mobil 1 is a good lubricant.
IMHO Redline is better.

Actually I find locally at about $6 a quart. Mobil 1 is around $4.50. I would say wait a month and go for the Redline or get 75/90 Mobil1 and be done with it.

Cheers

Ok, I'm just starting to buy some synthetic gear lubricant and I'm cofused on a few things. If I go with Mobil 1 75W-90 am ever going to have to change the fluid again? My local Advanced Auto charges $7.99 for a quart of Mobil 1 75W-90, I guess that's a little pricey from what I've heard in this thread?

If I go with the Royal Purple, will I ever have to change that?

I've read directions on how to change the tranny (5 MT) and rear differential fluid, but what about the center and front differential, or does the tranny exchange take care of that?

Thanks a ton, you guys are great

Next time I work on my car, its getting:

Oil change
Tranny fluid and rear diff fluid change
SS brake lines
Spoiler
Samco silicone intercooler hoses
Lightweight alternator pulley

I have all the stuff I need (except the tranny fluid), and it's just a matter of finding time to get it all installed

The tranny change takes care of the diff and transfer...

Just use any high quality 75/90 oil that is rated at GL5+. I used the Royal purple as I road race.

Will you have to change it again? Yes... I road race the car and I plan on changing the rear diff and tranny every 6000 miles. Overkill? Probably. I checked the tranny oil after a race session and had smoke come out of the dipstick tube. I think its a good idea and worth the $45. The tranny fluid gets hot. Very hot.

You might want to check out Amsoil. They might seem a little 'ghetto' in terms of their website, but that's what happens when you spend all the money on R&D rather than marketing. generally, you can find a local dealer of Amsoil, check their website/links and the prices are generally about the price of mobil1 (at least in So. Cal, mobil1 ~$5/qt). But what ever oil you use, as long as it's a reputable synthetic, i'm sure it will be fine. and yes, even with synthetic in the gear box you'll have to change it (less often, but still do). -in my bimmer i change it about every 15k, b/c that's when I start to notice that the shifting isn't like butter anymore.

ohyea, just a good habit/tip, always remove the FILLER plug first when draining any fluid. Sometimes (and it does happen), people will drain out the fluid without removing the filler plug, and then when their car is dry, they see that they weren't able to get filler plug off, leaving them with a dry, useless car. It's just good habit and it'll pay-off when your car get older.

FYI: The centre diff shares fluid with the transmission so there really isn't such a thing as changing your centre diff or front diff fluid in addition to changing the tranny fluid.

Default Oil to synthetic and back

With ease of shifting (particularly downshifting) my primary concern I first tried Amsoil in my tranny. This resulted in more grinding on downshifts so I tried 75% Redline 75-90 and 25% 75-140. This was better whan the Amsoil but not as good as the stuff the car came with. So I have come full circle back to plain old Valvoline 80-90 gear oil. Anybody want to buy 3.7 quarts of slightly used Redline? Its only got 500 miles on it

I finally changed the fluid yesterday and was at Advance Auto trying to find some nice 75w90 but couldn't find anything but the cheap stuff, so I got the Valvoline 80w90 and used it. Now i can shift into 1st at 12MPH instead of 8MPH Changing the fluid was easier then I thought, but refilling it was the hard part. I couldn't get my funnel it fit under the intercooler, so I got a piece of 5/16" fuel hose (unused), about 12" long, and pushed it on to the end of the little squirter on the valvoline bottle. Worked pretty good, but there was no air getting in, so as soon as I turned the bottle up I took a knife and stabbed the top so it'd flow faster. Car does shift a little smoother now and it actually reaches the fill line

Usually you wanna take your fill plug out before your drain plug. Just a good habit in case you drain it and then mess up the fill plug and can't fill it.

Still a good lesson to others who may not know why you remove the fill plug first.

Redline Lightweight Shockproof. But just be careful and money shift is totally possible. As this stuff is super slick it slides through the synchros real easy into any gear. Whatever you do don't mix stuff, specially Uncle Scott's Cocktail. When in doubt do a oil analysis and do what they recommend.

Only an idiot does a " money shift " unless they just don't give a crap about their transmission.

" Scotty's Cocktail " was a bunch of hooey from Day 1. He just threw stuff together based on zero knowledge and people were stupid enough to use it and ruined their transmissions. That came up in a number of posts in the past.

Similar to the days when some Medicine Man would hawk his " magic elixer " to " cure whatever ails you " when it was just something he threw together in the back of his wagon

And, you are wrong on " mixing ". All depends on what you are mixing together.
In a 5MT, and similar transmissions that do not use a pump, a 50/50 mix of Redline Lightweight Shockproof and Redline 75W90NS works very well.

Umm ive been running scottys for over 7 years, put over 120,000km on my 2002 wrx since and car has total of 420,000km. Ive done trips from Toronto to Chicago for over 9-10 our drives and other 6 hour drives etc to pittburg almost every year with NO problems. The tranny through has center diff bearing noise but thats expected for a high mile tranny. Uncle scotts saved my trans and fixed my 3rd gear grind completely and issues going into 1st gear. Ive done 2 changes since and I swear by the mix. The car also has stage 2 tune at 16psi for past 6 years.

Most time ppl posting how their tranny is destroyed by the mix is ppl that had their trannys on the last last legs and then put the mix in then shortly after going bad and blaming on the mix.

While there is * some * truth to that statement, I doubt that is true in most cases.
Far too many posts about how the use of Scotty's Cocktail resulted in transmission damage.

Now, people being what they are, stupid is as stupid does so that may be why all of the damage reports. Just look at all the posts of people's engines blowing up and blaming Subaru, when in truth these people did it to themselves, which you could track back to their other posts about how they treat their cars

Personally, I found far too many of Uncle Scotty's statements in general to be a bunch of hooey he could not back up when questioned directly. Given that, I personally would not have trusted anything he came up with in his garage.

Glad to hear you never glad any issues.
