Default BMW 4 Series Coupe spied in factory revealing massive grille

Love it or loathe it, the kidney grille is going through some drastic changes.

BMW is taking hit after hit this week in terms of leaks as shortly after someone published an image with the new M3’s rear end from within the factory, a similar image has now emerged onto the web courtesy of wilcoblok on Instagram. We’re inclined to believe this the next-generation 4 Series Coupe rather than the M3 judging by the vertical arrangement of the love/hate kidney grille. In addition, the sleek headlights are clearly different than the saloon's clusters since they appear to be inspired by those of the 8 Series.

Let’s all remember that BMW did “warn” us about the controversial changes planned for its corporate grille with the unveiling of the Concept 4 last month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, so we wouldn’t call this new look a big surprise. That said, the oversized pair of kidneys is certainly going to be the focal point of the car – for better or for worse – and to some people the rest of the design won’t even matter.

Front grille aside, the generous air intakes indicate we could be dealing with a spicy version of the next-generation 4 Series Coupe, possibly the M440i. Alternatively, it could be a lesser trim with the optional M Sport package. Then again, that might be the fancy Urban Green paint we usually see on M3s and M4 as well as more recently on the X6 M. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact shade of the car since the image’s quality is not exactly great. Either way, this doesn’t look like a base 4er.

BMW 4 Series Coupe spied in motion on Munich streets

All-new BMW 4 Series Convertible caught with the top down
The production-ready 4 Series Coupe will probably be unveiled in 2020 together with the M Performance version (M440i), with the fully fledged M4 to arrive shortly thereafter. A droptop M4 – this time around with a fabric roof – is also on the agenda and it’s been spotted repeatedly undergoing testing. An M4 Gran Coupe has also been rumoured, but we’ll just have to wait and see about that.

might have already posted this link but...

https://bald.tires/2019/09/10/bmw-in...ners-sniffing/

I mean it's satire, but I dunno, this quote rings true:

"This new concept embodies all the great BMW design values. The grilles get larger to show the higher performance and classic roots of this new model. As the driving dynamics move closer to the Toyota Corolla every year, we have to remind people more and more that yes, you are driving a BMW. The size of the grilles is in direct proportion to how far we stray from god's light every design cycle."

They are going to destroy the G series M2 with this ****. It will be an otherwise amazing vehicle with the S58, but it will be so freaking awful looking with these stupid big kidneys.

I mean words cannot describe just how bad the new design looks, all-around.

Guys, hydronephrosis is no laughing matter; BMW might have kidney stones, or at the very least a UTI; I hope they get treatment right away before the condition worsens.

I will wait for official pictures. It seems so drastic and I'm not sure if the typical M3/M4 buyer will accept it.

Have you not seen the new 7 series and X5? People are buying those ugly ass things. Don’t underestimate the idiots who will buy it, especially considering the new M3/4 is supposed to have 5XXhp and be 4WD

The massive kidney grille reminds me of the Pontiac G6 GXP.

Personally I think the 7 series and X5/X7 look better in person and that grill would in no way prevent me from getting one as IMO they still look better than MB offerings which are too pedestrian and don’t stand out visually as much as an upscale vehicle should. This grille however is really out there and looks like an early 70’s Pontiac GTO front end on steroids.

I agree about Merc especially S-Class. Genesis has basically co-opted Mercedes design language so whenever I see one I think Genesis. Which leads to these ridiculous cartoonish leaps. But IMO no luxury car should scream anything. Understated elegance is an overused term, but I do believe that's what most buyers want in such vehicles.

Eh, I'd still take the following over any MB equivalent:
M2
X3M / X3M competition
X5M / X5M competition
M6
M8

I'm crossing my fingers the M3/4 doesn't get this grill. If it does, give me the C63 AMG all day er day. Except for the coupe, the couple looks really stupid just like the M4.

I’d take a C63 AMG, G Wagen, AMG GT and AMG shooting break over anything BMW offers.

So... because internet?
