Default ‘Radical' shift possible for Hyundai design

Quote:
Quote:
SHANGHAI — Hyundai brand's new global design chief is a British-born Volkswagen veteran who says he's open to "radical" changes in the Korean marque's next-generation design language as it prepares for electrification and autonomous driving.

The design overhaul may even require rethinking the necessity of sedans.

Simon Loasby, who had been vice president of Hyundai's design team in China, took over last week as head of the Hyundai Styling Group at the Hyundai Design Center in South Korea.

Loasby, speaking with Automotive News before the announcement, said one of his main assignments will be creating a successor look to the Sensuous Sportiness design language rolling out across Hyundai's lineup.

Sensuous Sportiness, visible in the Le Fil Rouge four-door coupe concept shown at last year's Geneva auto show, is also embodied by the redesigned Sonata sedan arriving this fall.

The critical project that Loasby's team will take on soon is asking, "OK, where does that take us next?" Loasby said, referring to the current design look. "If this generation is Sensuous Sportiness, do we carry on with that? Is that still relevant in five years? Or does it need to take a directional or radical step change?"

Loasby said he doesn't have an answer yet. But he's not afraid to think outside the box about Hyundai's products.

"Do we need conventional sedans anymore?" asks Loasby, 51. "A serious question: How many more petrol-engine, diesel-engine cars do we need?

"These are fundamentals we'll get into for the next generations of our high-volume products."

Future designs will have to accommodate fast-changing trends in technology, he said.

"What excites me about the new job is the whole move toward EV platforms, autonomy, drones, robotics," Loasby said. "What's next — that will be the challenge for us."

Loasby said he will need to start working on the new look soon for it to be ready for the next-generation Sonata, which is expected in about five years.

Loasby will oversee Hyundai brand design and report to SangYup Lee, who leads Hyundai and Genesis design as head of the Hyundai Design Center, and to Luc Donckerwolke, who is in charge of Hyundai, Genesis and Kia as chief design officer of Hyundai Motor Group.

Loasby joined Hyundai as director of China design in 2017. Before that, he was director of design for Volkswagen Group China for nine years. He started his design career in 1991 and worked at Bentley and Rolls-Royce before moving to Germany with Volkswagen and moving to China.

He has a master's degree in vehicle design from the Royal College of Art in London and studied mechanical engineering at the University of London.

Default Hyundai Motor Group Loses Luc Donckerwolke As Chief Designer Steps Down

Hyundai Motor Group Loses Luc Donckerwolke As Chief Designer Steps Down

Famous Belgian car designer Luc Donckerwolke has resigned from the top design job at Hyundai, Kia and Genesis four and a half years after he was appointed to the position.

According to AutoNews, which quotes an internal note, his resignation is due to personal reasons and becomes effective on Wednesday (April 29, 2020). “It’s been an honor and privilege to contribute to the shaping of the future of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis”, Donckerwolke said in a statement. “Their audacious and progressive attitude has allowed me to push the boundaries and challenge the status quo.”

Donckerwolke joined Hyundai at the end of 2015, when he left the Volkswagen Group, and penned the Kona and Palisade, among other vehicles. He also helped shape Genesis, giving it a unique identity that draws a clear line between the new luxury car brand and Hyundai. He designed the G80 and G90 sedans, as well as the GV80 SUV.

His contribution at the Hyundai Motor Group was praised by Albert Biermann, chief of the Research and Development division, who said: “He has been a great inspiration for all of us, as a remarkable leader who successfully transformed the company’s design operations, taking it to the next level.”

The news outlet states that Hyundai will not name a new design chief for the whole group, as the design for the Hyundai and Genesis brands will continue to be led by Sang Yup Lee. Karim Habib, on the other hand, who joined the Korean company last year, will still lead the Kia brand.

Donckerwolke started his career in design back in 1990 with Peugeot. Two years later, he moved under the Volkswagen Group’s roof, where he penned the first-gen Skoda Octavia and Fabia. He also helped shape the Audi A4 Avant, R8 Le Mans racer and A2, as well as the Lamborghini Diablo VT, Murcielago and Gallardo.

The 55-year old Belgian was also responsible for the Seat Ibiza Mk4, Tribu and IBE concepts, as well as Bentley Flying Spur and EXP 10 Speed 6.

Koreans are always willing to try something new so I wouldn't be surprised. Unfortunately their new Sonata looks pretty fugly although that auto park feature is kind of cool.. well, until you find dings and scratches all over your brand new car for parking in a tight spot next to a SUV..

Not sure which is more ugly, new Sonata or new Elantra. So horrible I couldn't buy them no matter how good they are.

And yet you bought a civic sport? The thing that looks like it has a roman nose bridge, a horrible way-too-sloped hatch design, and a cohesive-lacking mix of angular, geometric, and smooth design languages?

> IMO

On topic: I think the koreans usually put out incrementally better designs than before, so I'm excited to see. I love the genesis stylings (although the grill is getting kinda... lexus-y as far as proportions go for my taste on some of their models).

The red car looks ok, the Elantra looks horrible. And the interior looks like a GM show car.

Yeah, I like the Civic hatch, but the Civic sedan looks too long. The Hyundais look even longer.

I think Hyundai's best look is this. If our 2021 Elantra GT looks like this I'm buying it. I really hope the hatch doesn't get the ugly treatment of the sedan:

Default Hyundai's Product Planner Wants a Genesis Coupe Revival

Scott Margason also revealed that the rear-drive sports coupe was almost named "Tiburon."

Quote:
Long before Hyundai crowned today's Veloster N hot hatchback as its sportiest offering in the U.S., the South Korean brand had flexed its dynamic competence muscle with the two-door Tiburon coupe and later rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe. The former entered the United States for the 1997 model year as a handsome but generally forgettable front-wheel-drive model. However, the latter vehicle, which arrived for 2010, truly helped Hyundai establish itself among enthusiasts. It faded from the market just before the Genesis sedan it was based on morphed into the standalone Genesis luxury brand—but could it come back? We asked Scott Margason, Hyundai's director of product planning, for his thoughts.

Somewhat surprisingly, Margason told us that if he had his way, Hyundai would once again offer a vehicle like the Genesis coupe. And why not? With its rear-drive underpinnings, handsome styling, and available 306-horsepower V-6 engine, the Genesis Coupe was an impressive and capable performance car. The Hyundai even took top honors in a MotorTrend comparison test against six-cylinder variants of the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang.

Margason, as well as Miles Johnson of Hyundai Motor America's public relations department, shared some insights into the development of the Genesis Coupe and its front-drive forebear, the Tiburon, in a recent sit-down with MotorTrend. For instance, the two reveal that Hyundai briefly considered pinning the Tiburon name to the rear-wheel-drive sports coupe that eventually became the Genesis Coupe. Give the above video a watch to learn more behind-the-scenes details about the two Hyundai coupes.

Unfortunately, there's no indication Hyundai plans to revive the two-door sports coupe, although the brand is exploring a mid-engined, rear-drive sports car to serve as a halo vehicle for its performance-oriented N sub-brand. There have been rumors that Genesis, the luxury sub-brand spun off from the original Hyundai Genesis sedan and Genesis Coupe models, might churn out a two-door coupe; however, such a model would surely be less pony car and more personal luxury coupe, à la the brand's Vision G concept.

It can't be easy designing cars and SUV's in this day and age. There really aren't a lot of sexy looking vehicles these days outside of exotics. So much copycat styles and generic shapes brought on by companies making their vehicles bigger and bigger to appease Americans. The current trend of companies trying to out-grille each other isn't helping.

In regards to a radical shift in design I'm all for manufacturers trying new things but it's debatable if it will generate better sales. Mazda last generation with the 3 made a pretty big shift as they are stylish and stand out but it really hasn't paid off in sales as the masses still flock to the horrific looking Civic instead. It's why working for Honda or Toyota design studios would be the best for job security as it doesn't matter how ugly Civics, Corollas, Camry's etc look as they still sell on their 1990's reputation of reliability.

In the article picture, there are some pretty ugly design models, but the red one shows a lot of promise.
