2018 Subaru Ascent Launched in LA
Subaru launched the new 2019 Ascent full-size crossover at the L.A. Auto Show. (Aside: My father managed a Seattle-based metal band in the 1980s named "Ascent" and I will always think of that when I hear this name.) The Barkley's "drove it" onto the stage and the crowd went wild. Watch the video for facts and figures on this new Subaru category-killer. It goes on sale Summer of 2018 and should be priced "starting in the low $30,000s."

The 5000lbs tow rating is great. Hopefully it doesn't feel too sluggish pulling a boat.
I laughed at the 19 cup holders, seems like overkill but I know people love their road sodas |

Its a pretty nice looking SUV/Crossover. I'm pretty excited to see it first hand.

Let's see what "starting in the low 30's" translates to.

I have a 2011 WRX Hatch running Stage 3 AP.
My mods are Cobb Accesport V3 Cobb SF Intake Grimmspeed EBCS Grimmspeed TMIC W/Perrin Throttle Body to Intercooler Coupler Perrin Turbo Inlet Pipe Stock BOV Invidia Catless Divided Wastegate Downpipe Invidia Catless Catback Exhaust W/1 O2 sensor I'm currently running the cobb stage 2+sf 93 mt v331 LWG Map: I did a data log and took a picture of my parameters. I am still over boosting in every gear. I'm boosting up to 20.1 PSI and once I hit 3rd hear an at 5500RPM it throws a code and puts my car into limp mode. The code of course is the overboost code. The check engine light comes on, the cruise control flashes, the brake light comes on. Here is what my AP readings are in 1st-4th gear 120mph 11° degrees out and I'm in the Boost. mountains high altitude -10.11 11.76/19.57 Feedback Knock -1.40/0.00 Fine Knock Learn 0.00/0.00 Dyn. Adv. Mult. 1.000 1.000/1.000 DAM Dynamic Adv. Len 0.00 0.00/6.50 Dynamic Adv. 0.00 0.00/6.62 So first off is that a bad knock reading? And second how the hell do I stop over boosting before I blow something up?? [ |

Get a boost controller and boost gage. You will at the very least blow a head gasket if you routinely go over 16 psi. Even worse you may damage the case and or burn a piston or valve that could be sucked into the engine. These are fairly expensive repairs. The boost controller and gage would set you back less than $150. Cheap insurance.
On the other hand, if you are track racing and don't need to drive the thing on the highway then boost the hell out of it and wait for something to blow! |

Head gasket least of your concerns...over boost/creep could lean you out and knock is what will crack your pistons. Valves shouldn't be an issue.
The 3 port boost controller should help but you need a "pro tune" to maximize function/response. Believe me you will run better and car will be happier with a legit tune. AP base maps are lowest common denominator and only get you in the ball park at best. As it sits the GS unit is probably part of the problem without a good tune. Good luck. -DT |
