The Harmon Kardon stereo with the Kicker 8 speaker set up I have in my MY14 XT Touring is AWESOME compared to anything subaru has put in a factory car. The motor has massive torque down low. The CVT set to S# will surprise you. It does not take off from a standing start quickly but when in gets rolling, it very quickly lets you know this is a nice setup. Use it in auto mode not manual. All you have to do is stab the throttle it down shifts 2 ratios and takes off like a scalded cat. Approach a corner get on the brakes it down shift to the proper ratio to keep you at 4k rpm to pull hard out of the corner. I am sure the 6 speed is a better car for the hardcore WRX fan. I also have a stage 1 MY04 WRX 5MT, it is a lot of fun. Just thought I would share my experience with the new FA2.0 DIT.
Can't wait to see how the numbers are when comparing the two transmission types on the track and 1/4 miles.

Really can't wait for the hatchback fanboys to get a clue and move on. If the newest generation only came in hatch, I would keep it moving to other makers if I needed a new car like I did with Mazdaspeed. MS3 hatch only after the Protegé and MS6? Nope, took my money elsewhere. There are unfortunately plenty other hatch things out there, have fun.

Also, looks are highly subjective. The car looks fine, and I'm sure they'll be plenty of mods to make it a better cup of tea if you think it's too plain.

And it's called future business orientation for a product. You create a basic looking car with all kind of internal redesigns, then spice up the exterior (and give the crybabies a hatch) as the product gets longer in the tooth to garner more when initial sales wane over the years. Worked last gen, will work again this gen. It's not so much the revolution of fans as it is good business practice.

Direct injection requires a very strong, high-pressure fuel system from the factory (pump and injectors). I imagine in stock form, the injectors and pump could keep up with another 3-4 psi no problem.

Read between the lines, the new WRX makes it's peak torque at 2000-5400 rpm. That's insane and you can't call this a "High revving" engine because frankly it's got more low end grunt than any oem turbo subaru ever made. The EJ255 on the current WRX makes it's peak torque at 4,000 rpm for comparison. That means you have to rev the current WRX to get to the powerband MUCH more than you will on the 2015 model.

Not being a fanboy here, it's just fact.
yeah i prob shouldnt talk about things i know nothing about lol...im sure people will make good power like anything else when you start adding parts and tuning.

I guess I'll be trading in my 12'. I like this a lot but I would not get anything other than the 6spd.

It's as if the only thing making this car incomplete is the lack of boxer rumble. other than that it is a much improved package minus those fat boy seats. thought the seats on my car were bad.

Great, satisfying review. Will reserve my opinion once I test drive one and see what the STI brings. And also not falling for the whole "first generation release" of a new car restyling. Never again

I agree with the last sentence. This is a disappointing outcome in that the car should have been lighter (as opposed to heavier). I can't imagine trading my 2002 for this. Just keeps getting bigger and heavier.

When is Subaru going to come out with a small rally car again? Until then I am not likely to bite.

I'm impressed. To think I paid $24,500 for my new 2005 WRX wagon and almost a decade later this new gen is not that much more in price. For those that say this is too techy; your just crazy. I think of implementing new technology in the new WRX was necessary for Subaru to stay competitive since all the other manufacturers including kia are putting these techy conveniences in their cars. For looks, I think they did a good job; the WRX actually looks aggressive and that was a major complaint when the last gen came out. As always Subaru fans got used to the look and before you knew it everyone was saying how great it is. Like everyone else here; I was completely blown away when I saw the concept and of a bit let down when I saw final product. I expect Subaru to do the same thing to the Legacy audience as once again the Legacy concept is downright mean looking. For all the improvements they have mentioned, the WRX is heading in the right direction and it's not all about how fast we can get to 60mph. It sounds like it's growing up and is trying to satisfy a more mature audience. It will be a sad day when I sell my 2005 but for once I see something worthy of making a jump.

I'm puzzled. My vehicle before my WRX was a 9th Gen. Lancer with a Jatco CVT transmission. People who attempted to turbo charge that transmission (those that at least posted about their attempts online) would usually blow the CVT after only a few pounds of boost due to overheating. Those who were successful had to come up with CVT oil cooling techniques (oil coolers etc.) and to my knowledge still couldn't make much over 200whp. What personally pushed me to sell my CVT lancer is when I was driving from Tucson to Phoenix on a 115+ degree F day, my CVT fluid overheated and the car went into limp mode to protect me from blowing the transmission. I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say that the 2015 WRX will put down 180-200whp on the dyno (correct me if I'm wrong) depending on what type dyno, bone stock. What happens with that CVT when power levels are taken upwards of 270whp? Based on prior experience with the CVT, I'm inclined to say that the Subaru CVT won't last much beyond the typical power train warranty unless the Subaru CVT has something the Jatco CVT didn't. Personally, I wouldn't dare buy the 2015 WRX CVT especially in AZ. Not that I would now anyways because I can properly drive a MT. Does anyone have anything to educate me about the reliability of this CVT?

Other than that, I personally prefer the ELH and twin scroll turbo so thumbs up to that. Styling of the front isn't too bad, those rear tail lights look horrible in my opinion. Like the reviewer said that's all subjective opinion.

Mechanically, the car seems to have lots of potential. I really don't mind the loss of the boxer rumble if it means twin scroll, virtually lag free power delivery. The improved handling, better 6 speed tranny, and possibility of improved response to modding all seem very promising. Torque band also seems incredibly broad and should be fun! I'm not a big fan of the looks, but it sounds like Subaru did a lot of things right with this new generation.

It's so goddamned good... Just lemme swap everything into my 2012 hatchback and I'll be happy.

Oddly enough, there don't seem to be many parts that would benefit from an upgrade. I mean, its ALREADY elh, twinscroll, better brakes, beefy swaybars, probably heatsoakless topmount, short shifter, awesome speakers, perfect seats, etc.

What will be the obvious upgrades?

Well, I guess the usual, higher flowing TBE w/ HFC, perhaps a CAI -- like in the 3rd gen WRX/STI -- if the factory box ends up being restrictive, and increased boost. I'm also hoping the stock turbo has more potential. Maybe the newest gen will be able to make power as easily as the EVO, or maybe a bit more due to direct injection. That, with a nearly bulletproof tranny and without the 3rd gen's ringland issue, would mean Subaru might have actually created a beast of a car.

From what I have seen over the years, and from owning my 03, Subaru has lost the "focus" the WRX and STi used to have. I absolutely agree; bigger and heavier. Just sit in my OEM seat, or swing my door open. Compare to 08+. The seats are huge and make me feel like I would need to hang on for dear life if I attempted a sharp corner. The door feels like it could be 5-10 pounds heavier. The windows have frames and who knows what else inside.

They should have come up with a coupe long ago. And no, the BRZ does not fit that bill. It falls far short of what a modern Subaru coupe should be.

I still don't get why there are sedan jerks like this out there. No one is asking for a hatch only. The Impreza in it's various forms has been offered as a hatch/wagon or a sedan since the beginning. We are simply asking for the option back.

And no; there isn't other "hatch things" out there with the power train I am after at a Subaru price point. I like the new design for the most part save the unfortunate rear. Would love to see what they could do with wider shoulders, hips, and a proper rear end.

Seems that they've really hit the mark though, which is awesome! Is the engine mounted lower in this car then in previous iterations? Just wondering if they stole a few thoughts from BRZ development. Didn't make the auto show this year and didn't see it in person.

Speaking of things mounted lower, the turbo, a nice little chunk of mass is mounted right down at the bottom which is good. Not to mention the benefits of funneling the exhaust gas (more specifically the heat energy) straight into a twinscroll like that must do wonders for response. No boxer rumble......meh, who cares. I'll take a good design and efficiency any day. Besides, the quick little snippet of exhaust noise in the video sounded great! I'm sure uncorked she'll sing real nice.

As stated already, styling is totally subjective, me personally, I like it. It looks "grown up" but without being boring. More like a high end luxo sports sedan. A nice set of multispoke wheels would seal the deal just fine. People gripe about "styling" every time Subaru changes it anyway.

I'm itching to see what they've done with the STi now. If they've given us a WRX that is this good, it makes my hopes high for the STi. If they aimed for "Porsche" handling with the WRX, how about for the STi? Porshce GT3 handling maybe

Can't wait to see what turns up! Glad to see Subaru are still making proper cars.

-Anthony
agreed whole-heartedly. i like the styling.. everyone can bash all they want but the main focus seemed to be improving the car in terms of performance.. specifically handling it looks like.
the car seems to have improved a bit as a whole. adding a cvt option does 'take away from the performance' but if it's not for you dont get it... the new 6 speed should be the main focus for us performance guys. chassis rigidity is up from the current gen right? and it does look like it corners flatter then the current gen in stock form. i guess we shall see!

I think the CVT option is aimed at buyers who want an alternative to the euro/lux performance sedans. buyers who may be older or just dont want to deal with a clutch but still want to have a fun car. i think the CVT geared more for good mileage rather than raw performance - that's what the new 6 speed transmission is for.

OH and btw.. in case no one is aware or forgot.. the automobile industry has to meet a sort of MPG minimum by a certain year... i think it was supposed to be for 2015 but maybe it's been pushed back. but yeh every car manufacturer must meet a certain average MPG for their fleet of vehicles otherwise they either cant sell or must pay hefty fees in order to sell in the USA. so yeh. sorry i was rambling lol

And I still don't get why they're hatchbackers whining on every single piece of media, blog, forum, and conversation about the new WRX not having a 5-door. I didn't say anybody wanted hatch only; I said if a car company creates a single body style that I don't want, I would move on if I needed a new car.

Here's a prediction. Subaru put all the money into this sedan for a car that is only 4% of their portfolio. Current owners complain about it's hatchless and call it "ugly" and leave. The car still sells with new owners, maybe old Scion TC fans who always wanted a factory turbo and AWD setup. Maybe with people who wanted WRXs but wanted a plainer exterior. The new car opens up a new audience. Then, in a few years when the car is getting old, they start to release more radical, sportier designs... And oh look, there's money in the portfolio to create a focused hatch version!

Same thing happened last generation with the hatch/sedan STI. I doubt Subaru will have any issue getting funds with a car that handles like this:

http://instagram.com/p/iC0AbYQXig/

Your precious hatch will come at some point, just not in 2015.
