I could walk around a parking lot and write down/snap a pic of the VIN for one of those if I was so inclined.
I guess watching the submitted video isn't proof enough of the car?

My concern was one that was already posted, the connection of your VIN to videos of you potentially "abusing" your car.

ah, I gotcha. That makes sense. I guess you'd have to read the fine print. I mean, do you have to take YOUR car with you to CA? You could just enter a different number to get into the site then video YOUR car.

But at least I get a free t-shirt and get to see some of the entry vids, there's a couple pretty good ones.
Nothing in the entry (that I saw) requires you to "show your chops" in *your* car (correct me if I'm wrong...) Borrow a friend's junker and then use your VIN to enter.

I think it just uploads to youtube when you upload your video. Too bad you can't just link to a video. All this uploading is redundant.

Yea there's nothing I've seen either that states you must use your own car so I suppose that could be done. But I don't think any old junker can be used, I'm assuming the vehicle in your video must be of the WRX/STI/BRZ models. So I guess in a way if you had a newer model under warranty and used your VIN to enter but borrowed someones out of warranty Subie to make the video that might work (assuming they let you bash on their car for a couple hours). Then they could still use their own VIN to enter the contest as well.

Just saying theoretically one could go to Auto Trader and pull the VIN from any random used WRX/STI that’s for sale and gain entry to the site (like because perhaps they didn’t trust this wasn’t a scam and didn’t want to use their own actual VIN). Just saying theoretically and all.

Yea but they still need a car to shoot the video. Besides I'm sure they do some form of proof of ownership thing.
From the contest rules: "The four (4) Contestants whose Entries receive the highest Judge's Score will be named a potential winner pending verification of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules..."

I was actually wary myself to enter my VIN until I got emails from SOA and my dealer about it haha.

Probably just a sting operation by Subaru to see how many people would risk their warranties

Nice to see SOA at the point they are, from a performance standpoint.

I remember meeting with some guys from the PennJersey Region about the 1st East Coast Subaru Shootout and them asking, " so what is a drag race, do you do it on dirt or...??? ".

And then people not wanting to come because they thought SOA guys would be walking around with a clip board, writing down VIN's to void the warranties

I don't plan on letting the stealership touch mine after what seems like they shot their own Gymkhana video in it when I took it in for an oil change

If anyone is going to abuse my car it's going to be me. Besides I'm not about to let someone bully me into telling me what I can and can't do to a car that I'm paying $30k for.

The combination of paranoia and butt-hurt in this thread is pathetic.

Some serious conspiracy theorists for sure. I'm paranoid and all, but not that paranoid. It is entertaining though.

I tried the VIN from my old WRX. Worked just fine. Granted, I don't own it anymore, and didn't want to enter my STI VIN (yes, I'm wearing my tinfoil hat).

I had the old VIN memorized. I'm a sick, sick man. LOL

I put my vin in for the free shirt. I doubt they are flagging vins for signing up. But I wouldnt feel great about posting vids of me drifting my car around a lot like an asshat only to ask for a new shortblock later down the road.

Also I refuse to "wrench" the ls1 swapped sti vids. Its barely even a subaru at that point.
