Default Legacy Project: Shakedown

Legacy Project: Shakedown

Watch the full episode

In this first of a series, we meet the new project car and immediately head out on a 600-mile shakedown round-trip, from Seattle to Keremeos, BC, Canada. Can this old Subaru Legacy with more than 250,000 miles on the odometer make it in once piece? Plus, a preview of things to come.

I love the comments about the 1.8 Impreza... Having had one myself, and going up Donner pass in it, I feel EXACTLY the same whenever I drive something that can hold speed in 5th gear... IT SURE IS BETTER THAN THE 1.8!

Meh, seems a bit overdramatic to me, there was nothing that was particularly great about those cars. My first car was a 1993 Legacy L which is the same basic car, just with the slightly updated body and the same mechanicals. You weren't going to win any stoplight races with it and didn't handle particularly well. Pretty average all around, really.

Minus the fact they are built like tanks.

Seriously, probably the most reliable, best built Subaru ever.

I had a 92 Wagon, really enjoyed it. Parts of my '01 remind me of it.

Mine was a piece of junk. We replaced the radiator, the heater core, bearings, bad O2 sensors, and probably a half dozen other things I can't remember because it was 15 years ago.

So no, it wasn't stupendously reliable for only being a 7 year old car at the time.

True. This was the model that set Subaru's first endurance racing record for its class. My first Subie was a blue '91 Legacy sedan. Its durability through my crazy driving years (teens/early 20s) is what endeared me to the brand. I took so many road trips in that car. Sigh.

In 2006, sold it with 240k miles for new blue Legacy sedan (still in the driveway).

oh man this was my very first car, a 91 legacy L in the same exact color. I ran a rear 92 strut top conversion with H&r springs and kyb struts. threw on a set of 2000 16 inch legacy wheels and a 92 turbo rear sway bar. It was a pretty good setup. I always wanted to get a turbo legacy from that same generation but got a wrx instead. Totally following this!

Contrary to the video (which I enjoyed), Stevens Pass is nowhere close to 7,000 feet high. Just a hair over 4,000.
