Broken camshaft
Trying to help out my sister-in-law with a 2008 Impreza, 64K miles that dealer just diagnosed with a broken camshaft (it's apart, it's broken at midpoint).
A month ago they replaced timing belt, cam seals, 3 timing belt pulleys, left OSV valve. 30 days later the car sputtered, check engine light came on, car towed to dealer with a broken camshaft. As they're concerned about removing all metal shards within existing motor, they are recommending installation of a remanufactured engine at $5600 ($3500 engine + $1800 labor + $300 misc). In my 50 years experience with cars, have never heard of this one! Maybe on a top fuel dragster? But a Subie with 60k? Perhaps its just one of those rare freak things Other odd thing about timing belt, dealer had previously replaced it in April of this year at 61.5K??? Thanks any and all!

Timing belt was due by time - 10 years or 105k miles or whatever.
I've heard of it, usually either there's an oiling issue, or a mixup with cam caps, or some serious valvetrain issue. Definitely not common though. Honestly on an 08, I'd be looking at a junkyard engine instead. And do a re-seal on it before putting it in. |

Broken camshaft
Yes, junkyard engine, if it was mine. Any idea if later model Impreza engine would swap out? Timing belt service I understand, but why again 6 months/2.5K miles later? Anyway that 2nd timing belt with pulley & cam seal replacement could have led to a broken camshaft? ... Thanks Cosmo!

Timing belt, cam issue
2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS (PRO VTD). I just had my check engine light come on 2 days ago and it just died. Code said cam sensors bank 1. Mechanic telling me it's the timing bt and cams and valves are bad, need to replace engine. Engine was replaced 2yrs ago with a JDM 2 5L with new timing belt and pump. Put 60K miles on it in 2yrs (don't ask). Is another swap really necessary? Help please.
