/me is with Sideshowbob on this one. In fact, I'll go one further. I know of lots of single trails where a dirt bike barely fits between the trees and cliff. Quad simply can't go there.
Quads are fun, but to say a 400-800 pound machine 3 to 4 feet wide can go places a 150-300 pounds 2-wheeler can go makes me chuckle. Hell, I can pick up my bike and carry it over stuff. But of course, I ride a little dirt tiddler... Random pic of my dirt tiddler when it was clean: Chris H.

On the plus side with a quad, as long as the trees aren't too big you can make your own trail and just run over trees that would knock you off a 2 wheeler. Pricker thicket? No problem. |

I raced a hare scramble once on a warrior and all i heard after the race was people on dirt bikes bitching about the guy on the 4 wheeler that was to slow and they couldn't get around. There was only one 4 wheeler

If you are talking speed then there is no competition, it's bikes all the way. My quad is full locked 4x4 made for slogging through the mud and crawling up stuff, tops out around 45 which is plenty fast for where I go.

It's called the sphere of acceptable risk and it is different for EVERYBODY based on your experience, skill, fitness, knowledge, and... sense of adventure. If something is too risky for you, it is outside your sphere of acceptable risk. If something is not too risky for you, like maybe riding slow with no helmet, then it is inside your sphere of acceptable risk. If you were operating inside your sphere then kickass - you had fun and didn't almost die |

About 50 ft off of that trail my neighbor just built a new mud pit where a tree fell. You know how the root ball leaves a big hole when a huge tree gets blown over. He got in there with his excavator and dug it all out. It is right on a small creek/ditch that only flows when it rains so it should keep it good and wet.
I get my new tires/rims tomorrow, can't wait to try it out. |

Not to be Admiral Obvious, but make sure your air box is well sealed. Usually, from the factory, there is little or nothing in the seams, and water will seep in when they are underwater.

Last year I bought a Honda Big Red for $50 out of somebody's back yard. They threw it in the front yard with a for sale sign on it and I bought it on the spot. She's a badass little trike, tough as hell and starts right up. I just need to find a rear axle for it and it'll be good to go.
