A squealing belt glazes the pulleys, which creates more squealing.
A brand new standard belt on glazed pulleys may continue squealing. I've never had this problem with Gatorbacks.

I did, but I haven't installed it yet. I ordered the belt proactively because the price was so good, but I hadn't detected any squealing yet at the time I ordered the new belt. The a/c squealing is a brand new symptom.

My Gatorback is working as expected. Squealing stopped. Never heard anything from turning AC on.

Anyone know what the flat plates directly behind the brake rotors are? Some kind of heat shielding? I'm getting a rubbing noise from the front left, and that plate doesn't look symmetrical and feels kind of warped around the edges. Im suspecting that plate might be rubbing the rotor somewhere. Its feeling a bit jittery under hard braking as well, so hopefully the rotor isn't warped too. Any thoughts/ help would be appreciated, as i usually leave the brake work to the dealership.
Part in question |

That would be your dust shield. Keeps brake dust off of suspension components.
It's possible that the shield is the source of the noise/vibration but unlikely if it hasn't been touched or damaged. I would just bring the car in and have it looked at. Noise and vibration can be a number of things. Brakes, tires, suspension, alignment. Last edited by Obviously Tyler; 07-08-2015 at 02:15 PM. |

That shield thing has caused me some concern in the past, usually a little rock/pebble gets lodged between the rotor and the shield and squeals like crazy. Usually have to pull off to the side and reverse a couple feet and it frees the pebble.

Good info, thanks guys. The frequency of the noise I'm getting is pretty clearly once per tire rotation, so i think ill take obvtylers advice and bring it in. Up for the 60,000 mile service soon anyway.

I need some help before buying a 2003 Impreza RS with a 2.5. The motor is blown, but I have a 2.5 from a 98 Forester. They are both 6th VIN ^ charecter engines. Will they swap or is it alot of work?

Has anyone tried messing the box that holds the HVAC controls to see if it has a switch you can disable to allow you to run defrost without AC like the older models?

This question would probably be better directed to the "naturally aspirated powertrain" sub-forum. Right now, you're on a thread specifically about 2012+ Imprezas.

In the SM, it only tells you to Inspect the belt every 30k. YMMV. I replaced mine at 60k. It wasn't giving me any trouble but since got replacement belts at a great price off Amazon, I just went ahead and did it rather than wait for the belt to deteriorate.

Beautiful
This car is beautiful. Have the same body style what have you done performance wise. Can you include links for the parts. I haven't done much on mine and I'm looking for things a beginner can do.
