Default 2015 STI Sound Generator Tube Removal How To

I got the intake tube to do the sound tube deletion today. Whole job only took a few minutes with simple hand tools. Pretty easy job, but for some one thats never done it, heres the how to. Included is the part number for the OEM replacement intake tube.

Pic of the sound tube as it came from Subaru..

Here is the replacement tube and its part number from Subaru. I had to wait to get it from the warehouse a day. Its not something your dealer may have just kicking around in the back.

...and the part number

Start by removing the two push pins from the rediator support by useing a flat blade screwdriver. After the pins are out lift and pull forward on the air duct and it will come up and off the air box.

Then remove the 2 10mm bolts and the center clamp. Pull the muffler looking thing from the forward tube and separate in the middle. It will bend because the aft hose is very flexible.

Release the clamp to the firewall fitting and slide it towards the muffler thingy along the hose. There is a triangular tab on the top to push against with one thumb, on the piece going into the firewall, while the other hand twists and pulls the hose off. ** Do not pull to hard or the grey plastic fitting will come out of the firewall** I don't know what happens if it does, but there is something attached to it in the backside.

AT this point the aft side of the assy can be put aside.
Next loosen the forward clamp next to the main tube.

Once loosened rotate the tube so that is standing straight up. It is not necessary to completely remove this portion.

Then loosen the two main hose clamps the the intake tube itself. You may have to wiggle them a bit to get the to break loose off the tube.

Once loose, wiggle the end attached to the airbox off first. You may have to twist and push a little but it will come off.

Then pull it off of the turbo inlet tube that runs under the manifold. Again, little wiggling and pulling and it will come. <that sounds bad, glad I didn't say it out loud.

You should now have the sound enhancement device fully removed. Take the hose clamps from the old intake tube and put them on the new on. Install is the reverse. Start by putting it on the turbo inlet and then the air box side. Because the airbox relies on this tube for some support it will maneuver around quite a bit to allow fit up. Ensure that the tabs are aligned with the slots on the tube. Tighten the hose clamps. **Do not over tighten**

Place the front induction scoop back in, and push the 2 pins in and seat them to the radiator support.

I still need to put something over the hole to the firewall. I am looking for some electrical connector covers, and I'll add them to this thread when I find some.

I buttoned up te car , put away the tools and took her for a ride. There is no more FFFUNNNT noises from the engine bay any longer. The only noises I hear now is the exhaust. Much quieter when driving now. ....and less annoying.

Its not that its real noisy, but just unnatural sounding. Kinda like a Hippo farting in your tub. Sounds much better, like a turbo car should.

Really subaru? Whomever designed that garbage should be fired and set adrift.

Jeez I still can believe someone payed for that design then thought enough of it to produce it on lots of vehicles. It has probably cost subaru hundreds of thousands to put that farting hippo in your ride.

Might as well have put a card in the spokes..... OEM fail

Another great idea from Toyota. They put them in the lfa so someone thought a 2.5 4cyl needed one too? Maybe if Yamaha tuned our cars intakes as well.....

Nice write up. This sound tube will be a mixed bag. Some people will want it. Some won't. Believe it or not, there are some Subaru owners that upgrade their intakes for the sole purpose of making more noise. The same goes for exhausts. People actually do this, and Subaru offering a little noise gain isn't specifically bad. At the same time there are other owners that won't want it. Frankly from a cost perspective, I would not put it on and simply let the aftermarket community offer noise enhancements to those who want it. Plus anyone putting on an aftermarket intake will now have to deal with the hose and hole in the firewall.

Thanks. I like more noise, to a point. I like it to sound like a spooling turbocharger. I like a bit of exhaust note, but no Invidia N1 race. A little swirl, a little burble keeps me happy.

Having this on just introduces more possible points of failure IMO. I do wonder what the development cost was. They should have spent the money on the hatch design!

hahaha i completely agree. if anything just make the intake louder so you dont have to "force" the turbo car sounds into the cabin.

BMW's doing this with some ****ty audio replay that isn't even the actual intake noise in the cabin.

Apparently some study groups deemed it a win.

That being said, I've got 1500 on my 2015 STI and I don't mind it. It's very quiet in S-SI mode, but in SS-SI mode, it's a bit noisy.

/shrug... I love the hell out of the car. Leaps and bounds better than the 2006 STI.

^I dunno, I'm in the boat that loves it. It sounds similar to a quieter, less obnoxious, tuned aftermarket intake. You've got some extra intake growl, spooling, and blow-off hisses all stock now, but only when you're gunning it... and it goes well with the STI performance exhaust.

It sounds nothing like what I would imagine a "farting hippo in a tub" would be like, and if it keeps some young punk from installing some stupid aftermarket intake untuned to scream through the neighborhood with some obnoxious "PSSSSHHHH" then I'm all for it.

To each their own though, pretty detailed write-up regardless... Will use it some of it for my turbo blanket install, so thanks!

Nope. Only the STI has this. Something about intake tract differences with the turbo placement and blah blah blah.

Wow?!

Although an engineered part, it is effectively after the MAF, which by rights would effectively cause a lean-condition.

None-the-less, another 'vrooom vrooom' gimmick to add to 'race car'.

I would have simply removed the sound generator tube and put a cap onto the intake tube, whether it was pretty or not.

what the hell? they actually wasted $$ to make sure you could hear the turbo in the car?! put an AEM and an AP on it and be done with it if you want more sound.

engineering economics at their worst. wasted money on production. i've seen it all.
