#1.) Blizzak WS60
Quote:
The Blizzak WS60 features a dual-compound tread with Bridgestone's silica-enhanced Tube Multicell compound layered on top of a standard winter compound. The Tube Multicell compound is comprised of thousands of microscopic tubes and cells (which resemble the consistency of Swiss cheese when examined through a microscope) that wick away the water that often forms between the tire's contact patch and the surface of snow-packed and icy roads. This flexible tread rubber compound improves the tire's grip, allowing the biting edges to adhere to the surface with less interference. The bite particles attached to the tubes of the Multicell compound with a special coating, bite into the surface of packed snow and ice to provide extra gripping action. The pores and tubes are uniformly distributed throughout the compound and are constantly being exposed around the tread as the tire wears. This unique tread compound is molded into a directional tread design that features independent tread blocks with 3-D zigzag sipes to disperse water away from the tire's contact patch, further enhancing grip. The result is enhanced hydroplaning resistance and greater driving and braking force on snow-covered and icy roads.
#2.) Blizzak DMZ3

Quote:
many light trucks feature four-wheel drive systems to enhance their poor weather capabilities, their unique ability to accelerate with relative ease (compared to standard passenger cars) doesn't convert into extra cornering or stopping traction. So if you want to maximize all of your light truck's winter capabilities, use Bridgestone Blizzak technology to help provide the snow and ice traction you need.

Like I already stated in my other thread, I've got 225/45/17 Eagle F1 A/S on the BBS right now and want a recommendation for a winter tire thats a significant upgrade in the snow from the F1's (otherwise I don't feel like its worth spending more money). Preferebly like to keep the price below $150 per tire.

oops ...

I have three options for you ....

since you mentioned the boarding trips to BC I think the best choice would be the LM25 Blizzak due to the superior snow and ice traction

my second choice would be the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D it is a little more versatile as far as dry, wet and snow traction

third would be the Ultra Grip Performance from Goodyear (mostly because of it's $135.00 price tag)

all three would offer a huge increase in snow and ice traction over your previous all-season tires

The Dunlop seems like a much more balanced tire than the other two, which is why I was leaning that direction to begin with. Thanks for the input Luke!

I would be running this package

235/45R17 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D XL .... a versatile winter performer at home in wet conditions and light to moderate snow plus the XL makes it somewhat more resistant to pothole damage

17X8 MSW TYPE 14 ... good looking, easy to clean with a durable finish

Pirelli SottoZero ... good winter performer which is better than most in the dry

Winter 210 Sottozero tires are Pirelli's "dual-season" Performance Winter tires that were developed to be effective as temperatures approach freezing and below from mid-autumn until early spring by offering hot performance compared to summer tires when driven on dry, wet or icy cold surfaces. Winter Sottozero tires are for the drivers of high performance sport cars, coupes and sedans who don't let their enthusiasm for driving cool off in winter.

The Winter Sottozero tread compound utilizes cap and base technology that combines two different compounds. The upper strata (cap) that comes into contact with the road surface uses Pirelli's latest generation silanes to bind the silica and polymer to provide greater stability during hard driving in both wet and dry conditions. The sub-strata in contact with the casing (base) uses nano-composites (aluminum silicates) dispersed throughout the polymer to provide the stiffness that enhances stability and driving precision. The tread compound is molded into an asymmetric tread pattern divided into distinct inner and outer elements to blend traction in snow and on ice with drivability on dry and wet roads. On the inside, they utilize Pirelli's ultra high performance tire structures to offer levels of performance not normally associated with winter tires.

All Winter Sottozero Performance Winter tires meet the industry's severe snow service requirements and are branded with the snowflake-on-the-mountain symbol.

but don't cheap out and purchase the Mercedes Benz spec version. Spend the extra $21 per tire for the extra load model which is more durable

Won't All-Season Tires Work Just Fine?

By design, All-Season tires are a compromise intended to provide acceptable traits under a wide variety of conditions. However, that compromised goal prevents them from being a master of any one of them. The All-Season tire tread designs and compounds that are engineered to provide extended mileages and durability under the summer's sun are less effective in winter's freezing temperatures, and through snow and on ice. Specific winter tires deliver much better snow and ice performance than All-Season tires because their tread designs and tread compounds are engineered to master those conditions, while summer tires are engineered to deliver better handling in the rain and on dry roads. Why not have the best tires for each of the conditions you'll encounter?

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 ... while it is a performance winter tire the Michelin engineers have chosen not to focus as much this tires ultimate winter ability but rather to create a tire which can do the job in winter with a more civilized ride much like many of the Michelin products. They ended up with a tire which offers less winter traction compared to the tires it is designed to compete with but, with a noticable better ride quality.

My first thought given what you have said it the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D but, going into the UP give me a second thought of the Michelin X-Ice XI2 for more aggressive ice and snow grip but, knowing how strong the blend of snow, dry and wet grip the Dunlop has along with your driving all over the state for work I would go with the Dunlop

Luke, I daily drive my STi and I'm not exactly known for driving slowly. I also drive to VT/NH several times over the winter and will be doing at least one winter TSD rally this year. I'm looking at Blizzak LM25's and the Dunlop Winter Sports. I want a good level of performance on dry roads, but am more concerned with high performance in the snow.

you are the exact driver the Blizzak LM 25 is designed for .... maybe you should send them your picture for their advertising

Cool, when I bought the car last winter it came with a set of worn out Blizzaks that got me through last winter just fine, I just wanted to know if there were any better alternatives.

the width difference between 205, 215 & 225 isn't that big of a deal. While in deep snow country I would opt for the narrowest tire possible but you're not in Buffalo NY. Take a look at the Michelin X-Ice XI2 or the Pirelli Winter Carving with the Michelin being my first choice .... and I would go with the 225/45-17 size

I'm thinking between Blizzak WS60 or the Dunlop WinterSport3D. Is dry traction on the Blizzak really that bad?

Thanks for this thread!
