Throw out bearing
I understand that a throw out bearing is the thing in the clutch system that temporarily disengages the engine from the manual transmission while shifting etc etc but what makes these bearings go bad? Is it riding the clutch or what? I'm just asking cause I have a 16' wrx 16xxx miles and my bearing is going bad already. Also is it normal for it to go bad that early?

The more shifting you do, the shorter the life span of the clutch & it's components, including the throw out bearing.
16,000 is way too short for a typical throw out bearing. By asking " Is it riding the clutch or what? " sounds like you already know the answer |

Do you keep the clutch pedal in when you sit at a red light? That puts an unnecessary amount of wear on the TOB while doing absolutely nothing for your driving.

Agree with the 2 previous posts.
I will add that some of the newer Subies seem to have ToB issues that may be covered under warranty, do some searching on that. |

No, I dont. I always stay in neutral when at red lights/completely stopped and try to minimize clutch use that's why I'm confused why this happened so early

How do you know it is going bad? What is it doing? Is it just making chirping noises on cold starts when it is moist out? That is a design flaw, and not a wear issue.
Either way, try to get it replaced using the TSB. http://www.subispeed.com/instruction...se-bearing.pdf |

I have 30K miles and the dealership first replaced my pedal assembly and then the entire clutch and clutch cover. Whenever I would push in the clutch it would make a creaking noise, which went away for a few days and then came back after they replaced the pedal assembly. They opened the clutch and it was covered in rust...I live in Texas and the car is garaged except when driving so I have no clue how that happened. They replaced the clutch under warranty and now it feels CRAZY light compared how it use to feel...
They also reflashed / updated my ECU and didn't tell me about it. The torque delivery is completely different and now my seatbelt warning will go off when it previously did not... |

When my Legacy TOB went @255k, it was doing the chirping (sounded like shrieking) only when the clutch was engaged.

I don't get that whirling sound from the TOB. Mines is completely fine. I did get that creaking/clicking sound though. Been driving it like that for about 17500 miles. It does not affect the clutch operation. Rather its just poorly design.
Subaru recently has a TSB update. You can take it to the dealer and get the clutch pedal assembly replace with the new design. I got it not long ago and so far so good. |

if the 2016 has a push type clutch you can add a spring to pull the fork and throw out bearing away from the clutch when its not being used.

i have a 2017 that was brand new. The TOB started to make noise at one thousand miles had mines replaced with a new one, was told that it was a new deisgn. Have no problems with noise yet. from what i was told the TOB wears out faster from holding in your clutch like when waiting at a stop light

Has anyone posted the question or put out a survey to see how many people have the ToB or Release Bearing problem? Sure it is covered under warranty, but what about when that warranty ends? Subaru is replacing this bad part with the same part.
I have gone through 3 clutches now and I am under 50k miles. My warranty no longer covers this stuff AND the first one went out at 37k miles. Ive been driving manual for 20 years now. Im not perfect, but Im not ****ty either. Austin Subaru just replaced my clutch components, flywheel, and all of my pedals. The clutch components are supposedly brand new and are from the STI(???). This is what I was told, and I dont believe I can confirm that. BUT supposedly this will rectify the ToB issue that so many people have. I am at the point where I dont recommend Subaru or the WRX anymore. every 6 months, my WRX is in the shop for something. Most of the time it has been minor, but its a huge hassle to constantly bring it back to the shop. 2016 WRX Premium in LBP (No Perf Mods): Window track replacement x2 Clutch and everything that deals with it x2 Steering column bushing Bent Rims x2 Gas tank release lever cable |

Hey man, sounds like we went through the same exact thing. So you do have 1 yr warranty on the part from the installation date regardless of if your warranty is expired. I went through about 3-4 throw out bearings myself and it definitely wasn’t because of the way I drive. It’s just a terribly made part apparently and they would tell me the same speach about “oh we gave you the upgraded clutch now etc etc”. I actually ended up just selling my wrx a couple weeks ago got tired of dealing with it and worrying about having to go to the dealership. Best of luck man. |
