I am wondering this as well. I know my '04 had them and are removed, but wondering about my '09. TSB was from that year, but you would think they maybe had some idea before it came out?

I bought this car at 150k. Pulled the bolt to replace the filter (never removed) and it was clean. Not even 1 piece of sediment or debris. I'm wondering if some people have casting material in the head that comes off? I put a new one in.. Turbos need fresh clean oil.
Sorry, 2008 Legacy Gt

Here's the 2017 I don't see a filter in the banjo's bolts.

http://estore.subarupartswarehouse.c...10-040-02.html

Look around that site you may be able to find the oil pipes and other banjo's.

I don't think it's as simple as that. If you look up the '04 for example I don't see the filters either as they are "part" of the banjos I believe. Still curious if the new models carry these. Has anyone '09+ checked this?

Sorry, 2008 Legacy Gt
over the years ive followed threads about the banjo bolt filters. it seems 99% of the issues is with neglected cars with bad maintenence.

I seem to recall seeing somewhere they were listed as banjo, filter.

There is also a thread here with pictures of each model and where the banjo filters are. I have that bookmarked on my home PC but not here on my lap top.
I did get that picture from this site.

I know they moved them to the top on the OCV's on the 07-09 Legacy GT's.

Have you done a Google search asking where are they located ?

on the same site, if you check out the cylinder head diagram it looks like they still use filters on '17

actually even the same PN as the late '04-'05... does look like there was a redesign in mid '04 though.

Default 2007 Outback XT - where is the turbo oil line banjo bolt?

Hi all:

I have just experienced the P0011/0021 code. Spent the day online looking at videos and wondering if my turbo is toast or if I can get way with just removing the filters at the banjo bolts on the turbo oil line and/or the AVCS banjo bolt filters.

Some background: I have noticed a drop in power at lower revs, some difficulty starting the car, occasional hesitation pulling away from stop lights and terrible average mileage - 14.4 mpg in mostly city driving.

First step was an oil change. Then I tried to get at the banjo bolt that is supposed to be at the back of the right cylinder, next to the turbo, that supplies the turbo. Pulled the heat shield off the turbo and there was no banjo bolt where I expected one to be. I think most of the videos I saw were 2004 and 2005 cars.

Here's a pic of where I expected it to be. Does not look like what is in the TSB or on any video I saw. Was there a change in 2007?

I will proceed to remove the filters at the other two locations for the AVCS and see if that helps. I'd still like to have an idea where the line that feeds the turbo is and remove the filter there (if there is one in the 2007). Would not want to toast that. Only 68k miles on this car.

Thanks!

Kevin

Just checked my 05' STi since it's on the lift in my garage and I'm working on it. Checked the two AVCS banjo bolts. No filters in them at all in lodged anywhere they shouldn't be. I am pretty sure I checked these two 7+ years ago and also confirmed no bolt filters... just forgot about them. Never changed the turbo filter. Found a youtube video and someone showing where it was. I removed that banjo bolt and the filter was 100% clean, nothing in it. I removed it anyways just because everything is off and I'd rather not have to do this again.

I do change oil on this car every 3k miles using Motul. In fact this is the only car I have that has ever had 3k oil changes. Rest of our fleet is either 5k for my truck/wifes toyota, or 10k for the Merc and Lexus.

Completely agree on the filters in the bolts being an idiotic design. Why they didn't include some type of inline filter just seems like extra work to have a filter in a freaking banjo bolt...

Good thread! Hope no one else's stuff gets trashed.

Default Looking at buying an 05 LGT

The car I’m looking into says it has a new turbo and clutch, 116k and Carfax says tranny was replaced a ways back. I’ve read the “sti vs LGT” thread and many say don’t even look at one that says “new turbo”. If it has a new turbo is it because of the banjo or could it be something else? I’m taking it to a Performance shop that works Subaru’s to have them look it over. Just wondering what to look for. Any help is appreciated

I have a pretty much bone stock 2013 WRX with an EJ255. Is it likely that these filters are still in the banjo bolts on this model year? It seems, according to the parts documentation from Subaru, that some of the locations I've seen referenced in posts elsewhere do not have filters in the bolts.

According to the Subaru parts literature I've reviewed, on the 2013 MY WRX these filters would be present in the following locations: top turbo main bearing inlet bolt, front of drivers side head, and rear of passenger side head under the intake.

Any confirmation on this? Visually I can see that only these locations have the bolts with the little protrusion on the head which seems to be characteristic of the bolt with the filter screen.

Does anyone know if these filters still exist on the USDM EJ255 on the 2013 WRX? My search of the Subaru parts literature suggests there are three. One is under the intake on the passenger side which looks..fun..to remove.

I just bought a 2008 WRX from a buddy of mine. He changed the oil every 2500 miles so I’m debating whether or not to remove the banjo filter from the oil line to the turbo. After reading some, I see there’s a couple more also. Any advice on what I should do would be appreciated. Thanks.

Despite having turbo failure at 82k miles due to a clogged screen, I still have all screens and have added another 100k miles. I only run xW-40 or Euro xW-30 and change the oil every 5k.

Yes, the screens are there for good reason. They prevent large debris from damaging the turbo and causing the avcs solenoids to stick. If a large enough piece of debris gets into the avcs, it can cause a malfunction of the valve timing. The bulletin shown only states to clean or replace the screen. Even with a few pieces of debris in the screen, there is more than enough area for sufficient oil supply. If you're worried about the screens, be sure to change your oil regularly and more often if you track it obviously. You can also just remove the screens to inspect them every 30-40k miles to be sure they are staying clean.

Thanks for the insight. Was searching around for the filter stuff but didn't know the AVCS had them. I'll have to put that on the list for next time I do oil change.

A friend's GM truck had a similar issue with the filter for the oil supply to the valvetrain. Apparently it was an issue for many GM V8s. The screen would clog and starve oil to the valvetrain. I found a how to for him to follow to fix it. Just cleaning or removing the screen didn't help aparently. The grit that would build up would drain back down the oil supply hole and just clog the new filter or be sent into the valvetrain. There are youtube videos for cleaning the system during a new filter install.

I'm going to go change the oil on my STI now.

I replaced the turbo side line to turbo and AVCS, now my AVCS are off a degree or so, guessing the other side is a lil clogged, harder to get to tho

My 2009 Forester XT lost power while driving home on the highway today and threw the P0011. I heard a couple of screechs from the turbo and power was WAY down.

So far I have dropped the down pipe and found the turbo is toast, side to side play and difficult to turn. I have removed the OCVs and the bango bolts above them, all looks good, no filters in the banjos.

I have NOT removed the banjo from the the rear right cylinder head, will do that after turbo is off.

Anything else I should check or do, other than an oil change. Car is new to me so I don't know the history. PO did his own oil changes religiously but he only owned the car for a a little over a year. Sounds like the owner before that was a dummy as he was running mismatched tires on the car so who knows about the oil changes....

Best place for a turbo in Canada? Rockauto can have one to me in a week for $800CDN. Cardone or Rotomaster?
