Bugeye blew headgasket?
Hi. This is my first time posting but I need a bit of help diagnosing my 2001 bugeye wrx.
I was going to get food today and I noticed the last few times I've started my car it's taken a while to turn over but it's all fine. Today I started it all fine and I drove to get food. In the parking lot I started it again it it took a long time. It also started having an issue starting then where it would idle at 1000 then in a few seconds drop to 500rpm where it would sound like it stalling and then bump up to 1000rpm again and this would happen every 10 seconds. I checked oil and it was full but it looked a bit darker than usual. I reversed and stalled it. When I started it again I thought a metal can in the back rolled into my seat cause I hear a quiet metal Tin pop sound but now I'm thinking could've been the engine. I also noticed a week before I was getting a kind of turbo buffering feeling a few times when going past 3000rpm. So I drove for a minute and found my thermostat was on max and my aircon was blowing boiling hot air. I pulled over straight away and shut it off. Opened my bonnet and lots of steam/faint smoke came out. Smelt really bad and I looked and there was oil splattered in spots where it shouldn't be. So my thoughts were headgasket although it got changed at the start of this year so probably 15,000kms ago max. Could it be turbo? Any help would be great please, I'm a struggling student. Thanks

You need a good mechanic who knows Subarus to look at it. I would say that as a student, a reasonable alternative would be to dump this thing and pick up a used Civic.

I agree you need an experienced subaru mechanic to look at it if your not confident diagnosing this yourself. The first thing that comes to my mind considering HGs were recently done and you heard metal noise is that your Cat'd up pipe shelled out into your turbo and passed it to the motor, which would suck big nuts.
If I were you (full disclosure, not a subaru mechanic... but I do own two and am an aircraft mechanic) I would not attempt to turn that motor over anymore. Drain the oil, look for contaminates / shiney metal film. Let us know what you find. |

It would also be helpful to post your location (which should be in your profile with your car information). The fact that you mention having a 2001 bugeye tells us you are probably not in the US or North America which is where the vast majority of our forum members are located.
