Default ECU's on 2.5i's

I"m looking for a little bit of power for my 2.5i. I already have an injen cold air intake, and an exhaust is out of the question for now. I was looking at the rallitek perfectpower6 ecu, and was wondering how well it would work?

You can tune your stock ECU if you want. Using a Tactrix for Subarus and the free Ecuflash program from OpenECU, you can read and write your stock ECU's memory. If you post a copy of your ECU's memory at Enginuity, they'll update their free program so that you can change your spark advance, a/f, etc. with it.

It appears that, beginning with the 2004 model year, Subaru switched from using a Unisia JECS ECU in the 2.5RS to a more modern Denso ECU with a 32-bit processor. The Unisia JECS ECUs have three connectors whereas the new Denso 32-bit ECUs have four connectors.

Subaru 32-bit Denso ECU ROMs can be read and re-written by EcuFlash using any Tactrix OpenPort cable which supports Drive-By-Wire Subarus, such as the OpenPort 1.2 cable which sells for $79 + ~$5 S&H (see http://www.tactrix.com/product_info.php?products_id=31). You do not need any of the WRX reflash connectors.

Here's any example for a 2005 Impreza 2.5RS with automatic transmission. The guy dumped his ECU's ROM to his laptop hard-drive using his OpenPort cable and EcuFlash. Then he tried to open it with the Enginuity ROM editor. But Enginuity didn't recognize it because there were no definitions for it yet. So the guy started a thread in Enginuity's ECU Definitions forum, where he described his car's year/model/transmission and uploaded a copy of his ROM image (see http://www.enginuity.org/viewtopic.php?t=833). Soon thereafter, Enginuity's ecu_defs.xml file was updated and he could begin editting his ROM image with Enginuity. Here's an example of what he could change.

Here's a similar story, this time involving a 2006 Impreza 2.5i with manual transmission: http://www.enginuity.org/viewtopic.php?t=724.

Since it was only recently discovered that newer normally aspirated Imprezas have ROMs that can be reflashed, experience with them is still low and the number of maps one can change is still limited. That will change as time passes.

BTW, even if your ECU is one which can't be read/reflashed, the Tactrix OpenPort cable is still a worthwhile purchase if your Subaru has an OBD-II connector (i.e. 1996 or newer).

You can log runtime data from the ECU via the Subaru Select Monitor protocol using Enginuity or ecuExplorer. You can also pull/reset trouble codes and their freeze frame data and also check OBD readiness monitors with the OBD-II scantool program at http://www.aktivematrix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=957. All of the software mentioned in this post is freeware.

Read on those websites. It's "do it yourself" tuning.

If you don't understand how to tune cars though...you really should not be messing with it. That software does NOT include any type of safeties that will warn you if you're doing something that'll result in a dead block. It's not for the uneducated.

Which software does this? Changing a fuel or ignition table in the OEM ECU is more dangerous and less straight-forward than trying to do that with a piggyback? I don't think so.

A piggyback can fry your block just as well... The only thing it gives you as a safety advantage is that, given that your wiring is correct, your ECU will definitely survive the experience.

EDIT: Er, I think the point was that putting this software in the hands of someone who isn't up on the tech could likely end up in disaster. Just the same for a piggyback.
