They SHOULD have used that R&D for Forged Pistons and/or Sodium filled Exhaust valves (would be interesting to see how many Ringland failures occurred before and after they took away the hot-spot eliminating Sodium-filled valves! MY07+).

And a better fuel delivery system...

If you have to add 3 feet of fuel line to a performance car to make it run better, there is a stupidly serious problem!

And this is what kills me:

EPA to Subaru - "Must produce less greenhouse emissions!"

Subaru - "Hypereutectic pistons! Energy conserving oil! "Wow we just saved .0002 grams of CO2 per car!!!!!

Customer - "My car is burning oil and has no power."

Technician - "You've got 90% leakdown in two cylinders and 30 psi of compression. It probably damaged your catalytic converter too:" It might not be covered under warranty."

Subaru - "F*CK." Our .0002 PPM CO2 savings x XX,000 cars = XXX,XXX times more emissions! "It's the customers fault for over-revving the engine! YES!"

Subaru Ad - "We have zero landfill waste."

So, so sad...

People actually do this, and Subaru offering a little noise gain isn't specifically bad. At the same time there are other owners that won't want it. Frankly from a cost perspective, I would not put it on and simply let the aftermarket community offer noise enhancements to those who want it. Plus anyone putting on an aftermarket intake will now have to deal with the hose and hole in the firewall.
i am willing to bet and hoping that the aftermarket companies that make the intakes for these cars will come with some sort of plug for the hole in the firewall.

I don't like the superficial "appeal factor" of this. Its not like a better intake from the factory would hurt the car. Or a how a about we fix ringland failures that have been happening forever?

Just curious, why not put a marble or something in the tube to plug the sound rather than removing the entire thing?

OP thank you for posting this.

A couple questions:
1. How much is the new "hose" from Subaru?
2. Is there a aftermarket silicone equevelent?

Thanks
Marc

That's the same hose from 08-14 WRX. Should be easy to sourse in the FS threads. I have mine laying around if anyone is interested. For silicone equivalent just buy a maf hose for 08-14 WRX.

I came off 2006 STI and now a 2015 STI. I wasn't sure what the sound was coming from considering I am a little hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. The sound was more like someone breathing really hard like shhhhhhhh (inhale) then ahhhhh (exhale) when I let go of gas. Happens on all gears but more apparent on 3-6. Will try this and see if the sound goes away. Really annoying as u said

The tube is half the cost of Perrin's option, fyi and retains the hose clips:

Update: Did the swap finally, the tube is ~$40. I still need to make some kind of plug. Used a cork from a bottle of Lagavulin.

My good friend has a 2016 STI and I recently purchased a 2016 STI.

This sound generator seems to work fine on his car while on mine it makes a high-pitched whine under moderate to heavy acceleration.

Out of curiosity, I looked-up the parts for this sound generator and I estimated that it would cost around $500 for all pieces if one were to install/replace if and as necessary.

I am ordering the replacement OEM intake tube w/o the sound generator.

When I am looking for more noise, I just put my lips together and hum through them like, "brrrrrruuuummmm!"

Artificial noise is stupid.

bumping to post part number needed. The images were not loading for days.
For 2015+ STI, the part number to use is the 2014 WRX intake, 46013AG020

Update:
Got the correct intake tube installed and here are my observations.

The STI in Comfort mode is fairly quiet, even in WOT. Great for pleasant drives.
STI in Sport and Sport# has more vroom vroom noises, in addition to the wastegate and air noises. After 4k RPMs, the "engine" noises are fairly loud inside the cabin.

I installed the intake pipe with no outlet for the noise generator. The car is now very quiet, in all modes. I could say it is quieter than how it was in Comfort mode. I started missing the fun noises. A quiet car doesnt feel as fun.

To try and get some fun noises back in the cabin, I tried the following.
Rremoved the milk jug and plugged the whole. This didnt increase engine noise.
Removed the plug from the filter box. This increased the noise heard from inside the cabin, but it sounded more like I had a bad wheel bearing. It wasnt pleasant.
Alternatives now were to get an exhaust and maybe an intake + tune. Dont want to spend that money right now.

Decided to put the car back to stock. I do not like the air noises that are allowed inside the cabin, but I do enjoy the engine noises that this sound pipe generates. The car feels sportier and more interactive.

Side note. When I removed the milk jug and left the hole open, the car was so much more responsive. I think I gained some power in that process too. I reverted because of the bad noise and lack of tune. Afraid of breaking something. I am now tempted to get a Cobb Stage1+ setup.
