Okay, so riddle me this - let's say I've been reasonably satisfied with my 12-year-old 1080p Samsung TV since I bought it, and I need a new TV. I mostly just watch the occasional movie and do a little bit of gaming, mostly Switch. I will eventually get a PS5, probably, but right now I just have a Switch, a PS4, and a bunch of retro gaming systems I run through a DAC on occasion.

I understand everyone loves the Sony X900H, which at 55" is about $975 at Costco. However, there's an open-box, never used 55" TCL 6-Series with full warranty for $550 at a local shop. For my purposes, is the X900H worth the extra $425? I do tend to follow a "buy once, cry once" policy but I'm also a price-conscious consumer and that's almost a 50% savings.

I went from a 46" Samsung LCD to a 55" Sony x900e.
The Samsung had better viewing angles, and that bothered me for a while.
DVDs looked worse on the Sony due to a 480p video being scaled to 4k, vs 1080p.
The Sony is bright! Like Im blind!! bright. Picture quality is quite good.

Its been like 2 years since I bought this Sony TV and Im happy with it.
I do not update the firmware every time a new one comes out though. Reports of people having reboot loops scares me.
HDR looks dark on my TV set, but this seems to be a problem related to the studios and how they code HDR. I do not have Dolby Video support.

I mean, they are both going to display images on their screen for you, so they both have that going for them. I suppose it comes down to how well each does. While I have no eyeballs-on experience with the TCL, I'd have to imagine that the difference would be similar to the difference between my Sennheiser cans which sound really good, and my $50 Taotronics headphones from Amazon which sound "good enough".

Yeah, but it's like, is the Sony twice as good for someone who doesn't care that much about having TEH BEST EVARRR image quality. The consensus from asking other people seems to be "not really." New the TCL is like $700-750, and at that point it's not that much less than the Sony and I'd just go for the Sony. But at a $400+ price difference I'm thinking I'm probably fine with the TCL.

That's kind of my point. I don't think anyone can answer that for you with authority. While the specifications of each do give the objective nod to the Sony, perception is subjective. Do my Sennheiser's sound hundreds of dollars better than my Taotronics? Eh... The gadget/audio snob in me wants to say yes, but my perception is that the Tao's are just fine for what I need. Same could be said between these two displays.

To be clear, I would buy the Sony over the TCL any day of the week, but that's just me. I would see the difference and appreciate the better image and build quality of the Sony.

Yeah, I'm sure I'd notice too, but would I notice it more than my bank account being $425 lighter? Probably not.

I won't judge. While I may be a "snob" about image quality, and can appreciate better than average sound, I also drink cheap beer and store brand coffee brewed single serve in a Keurig.

Right, whereas I still listen to CDs but have about $1,000 worth of rare beer in my closet and a $500 coffee maker

FWIW, I have a 2019 TCL 6 series and it is not bad. Not bad at all. You aren't going to get 2x the pq from the Sony.

If you're happy with an old Samsung 1080p, you'll be tickled by the TCL.

Yeah, I did it based on that and I marinated more over my "I will notice an extra $425 in my checking account more than I will notice the difference in picture quality between the two" and determined it was correct.

^Ditto!
Had old Toshiba replaced with mid tier Hisense and just the fact it is a bit newer looks worlds beyond from 12 feet away seating position.

Alright, I'm back again. Need some help figuring out how to set up my new spot. Is this something that is within OT's capabilities? It's a weird layout, I've got four speakers, and I can't annoy the neighbors.

So get bigger & better: speakers and amp. For $1000 you should easily be able to get a setup that will annoy your neighbors.

Unless you live on some acreage. Then you may need to spend quite a bit. Might need to look into PA speakers to annoy your neighbors.

They actually are going to an old quad receiver in 4.0, yes!

Any recommendations on a 70”ish tv for our main living room? Our Samsung 65” has gone out flashing on/off/on/off.

I’d say budget $1k-$1500 or so, doesn’t need to be bonkers the theater room has the better TV.

Saw this on a "deal of the day" RSS feed that I have.

Worth it to put in the drop ceiling to help with the bass shaking the whole house (wife acceptance factor is low on the home theater basement partially due to this)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/192873597357

Or is this more for recording spaces?

this is for recording spaces to absorb sound waves that would otherwise reflect off the walls.

you could move the subs closer to seating area. That way you dont need to have the level high enough to shake the whole room.

Or just tell her, complaint noted, and still do the HT in the basement

it is very difficult to absorb any appreciable amount of bass since the wavelength is so long. Short of adding many cubic yards of absorbtion material, concrete, or tuned "bass trap" dampers it is really tough to make a difference in LF. Its why you can hear the bass line in cars bumpin from a block over.

maybe gotta give her some "deal with it" sunglasses

Blue-sun: get new wife.

The tiles will help - as to how much, not sure. Depends on how dense those tiles are. For that price I'm guessing they're pretty light weight. Those are more designed to absorb echo, not contain bass.

Bass travels up & through walls. Insulation may be more effective. Roxul rigid insulation is even better, but more expensive.

Best way to deal with bass is a room within a room. Basically attach resilient sound isolating clips (RSIC) to studs & ceiling. Attach furring strips to RSIC, attach dry wall to furring strips.

In summary: buy new house with unfinished basement (at least 9' ceiling), build HT with room within a room design, and enjoy. Or get a new wife - the 2003 models are becoming legal in the US.

Blue-sun: you could also put a saddle on the sub, put wife on saddle, and play the black hole scene from Interstellar. Your wife may leave for you for the sub though.

My wife says bass gives her a headache so I mostly only kick the ghetto bass when she is out. I may need to look into these 2003 model wives as well
