Any ideas on what I can put this to use for? We already have media PC (Plex). I can make it a Arcade Machine, but in truth the stuff for the Raspberry PI seems to be much better sorted and the accessories are cheaper.

So what other ideas does the group have?
For real emulation an x86 machine is way better. It can also emulate much newer hardware than a pi is limited to. If it matters to you, which it doesn't sound like.

No need to buy Windows 10 if you have a legit copy of 8.1/8/7 already.

Do you have the install key sticker? Or any way of fixing the current OS so it can be upgraded to 10? Then you can just do a clean install of 10 on a cheap SSD once it's been activated. It's pretty slick.

No, it was originally a Win 7 machine. We have tried to find the OEM key with no luck.

Windows 10 keys are $10 on eBay. You could also just install Windows 10 and not activate it. If your windows 8 install was connected to your Microsoft account you don't need another key for the same hardware.

I never did bother with activating Windows 10 when I replaced the motherboard on an old Win 7 machine that was updated to 10 and the key linked to my account wouldn't work.
Other than the little notification in the corner saying it's not activated everything works the same.

Doing some research on a gaming laptop for my son, and *wow* are there a lot of options now in the 1000-2000 range. My last experience with a gaming laptop was long enough ago it was basically either Alienware (long before Dell) or Razer, for 3-5k.

I was not expecting so many choices, argh. I have a ridiculous discount on Lenovo stuff though, probably end up with a Legion, although there's a bunch of new models coming for 2021 still from the other brands.

This definitely made the Legion look like a great choice.

Good luck finding one. I had my eye on a Zephyrus M15 for $1700 (5900/3070), but stock ran out quickly.

Any site recommendations for a PC Desktop with the following:

i7
8-12GB+ RAM
SSD
Able to support 2 monitors?

Amazon has a bunch of refurbs but the reviews for them seem mediocre or problems.
Not looking for one that does gaming but will handle a normal workload without stuttering, etc.

UHD 630 can handle upto 3 displays (via HDMI, Display port and DVI, VGA and a wireless connection). Although you can plug in a wide 4K display with 2 1080p displays for a multi monitor setup.

Fanatec released a CSL-DD direct drive unit for $350!

compared to the 1200+ you'll spend on a DD1/DD2.. far better deal.

Honestly having spent a bit of time with the DD2.. it's great! But holy crap I have the forces turned down quite a bit and it still beats the crap out of me.

still gonna $pend when it's all in your cart... that's not changing.

That's a negative from me.

I'm in multiple Discord channels and follow multiple stock alert bots on Twitter. Sometimes I'm literally on my phone scrolling through other **** when I get a notification. It's always OOS by the time I click on it even if it's within milliseconds. At best, I'm able to add it to my cart but it inevitably tells me it's OOS somewhere along the process.

I've practically given up on it and will settle for waiting for the EVGA queue.

I've gotten close on best buy's last drop and amazon a couple times. For Amazon, you basically have to be on the discord channel to be able to click in time.

Best Buy drops seem possible. Distill plugin let's you track /refresh up to 25 cards and automate them but still seems like a crapshoot. Since I was able to get a 2080 I'm less inclined to try but I'll passively search and try the Best Buy drops.

I have zero luck with the Stock Drop bots/discord. I was barely able to get my 3070 during a Best Buy drop a couple months ago, and I ended up with an MSI just because it was the only one I could get. Now I'm just hoping I can get one of the 3080ti once those finally start selling.

I’ve seen the cards on the page for the Best Buy drops but haven’t gotten to cart. I’ll keep trying.

My buddy won the Newegg Shuffle and didn't want the Asus 3060 KO OC so I bought that at MSRP from him (should be here early next week).

Last Friday I was able to order an AMD RX 6700XT and AMD RX6800 via the AMD Direct Website. They are supposed to be here Saturday.

No I'm not a scalper. I currently have a GTX 1080 that I'll be upgrading but one buddy has a GTX 1660 Super and wants a new card so I'll sell him one at MSRP and another friends brother has a 6GB GTX 1060 and wants a new card also.

Sorry, totally missed this post. I'm in these two:

So, a buddy of mine got his notification from the EVGA queue today for a 3070 XC3 Ultra. He already has a 3070 so he's willing to sell it to me for MSRP if I want it. Part of me wants to snatch it up, but the rational side of me is saying that I don't need it. There are no big games out right now that I'm dying to play (the next one up is Battlefield 6, slated for a fall/winter release) and all I play right now is Overwatch, which my current PC handles just fine. I'd either be building a new PC right now when I don't really need to, or letting it sit and collect dust for a few months.

Part of it is just FOMO and not knowing how the GPU market will shape up. My ideal time for building a new PC would be sometime in fall, but there's no guarantee the situation will improve at all by then. If I don't buy it he has another friend lined up to take it already, but he's giving me first dibs. I have until however long it takes to arrive at his door to decide...

i'm not actively looking, but if my EVGA email comes through (didn't sign up till dec, when the hybrids hit the queue, so doubtful) i'll grab one.

i built my current PC just after pandemic days hit us. i didn't pay stupid pricing, but paid more than i should have for some parts... but i want more. i'm running a 3800x/2080 super combo and it works, but i'd still like higher frame rate. i'm running like mostly high settings on Control, RDR2, etc.

the one that still pisses me off is GTAO. while i've got the settings up there i have to drop shadows down to where it's noticeable and pisses me off (@2560x1080) and am still seeing into 60-70's on some areas. thats probably more the game than gear though. have you tried playing GTA IV on your new gear?

have you looked at what TSMC/Intel have been saying about outlook for their fabs? TSMC is saying it's going to be tight through the end of the year, and one of the Intel C levels said he wouldn't be surprised to see it continue on through '23.

i guess i truly need a monitor upgrade to something 1440P before i can bitch. but that then becomes a chicken/egg argument at that point.

Nvidia said a couple of weeks ago that most people won't be able to get a graphics card this year. So I will probably just hold off building a new pc till then. Not worth my time to track it all on discord or twitter.

Adding to the chorus here but just thought I'd share since I haven't contributed recently.

A group of 4 including me has won the following from the Newegg shuffle: 5800x, 5800x, 5600x, 6800xt, 6700xt, 6700xt. The CPUs have been a lot easier since those wins to find in stock.

I still don't know anyone personally who has won a Nvidia GPU through the shuffle.
Still seems to be the best way without stressing.

After playing Cyberpunk and WoW Shadowlands I have switched mostly to Xbox Game Pass. Gears 5 on the highest settings with the 4k texture pack is probably the most impressed I've been with a games visuals and environment. Forza Horizon 4 is a joy too.

Good luck everyone.

Damn! I think I'm at 22 shuffles with 0 wins. My buddy won the 3060 and he is keeping his 2070 Super so that's how I got the 3060.
