Vehicle suggestions for shikataganai (CN: Bought a ****in' Pacifica)

Conservative companies do conservative things. It takes time to bring product volume up and they might be sending a majority of what they can build right now to markets that are now requiring electrification (ex: UX 300e only in Europe for the moment) versus the US market that is still only 1% EV. Gauge response after year 1 and tweak the build mix to meet regulations and maximize profit. I don’t think they expected such a positive critical response to the car. Toyota always gets the “drives fine, nothing mind blowing, lasts forever” judgment from the auto mags.

Heavy rains this weekend meant locals here made a mad dash for the mountain areas to do a little winter driving. I woke up early to hit Rte 39 above Azusa and hit some snow the last 3-4 miles of the trail up to Crystal Lake cafe
DSC06711 by Ed Kwon, on Flickr DSC06707 by Ed Kwon, on Flickr Of course this being California, our exit was blocked by idiots who didn't bother to chain up their vehicles or the right tires up the mountain: And some genius who thought bringing his LS without tire chains on street tires was a brilliant idea. Like these sad bastards in an Escalade stuck in the ditch AND a pickup truck behind them also stuck |

In LA yes. Snow will always be an occasion/novelty. Hence the idiots that show up completely unprepared.

When a big storm rolls in in the Sierras for example, everyone who Snowboards/Skiis/Sleds for fun drive up on the weekends. Some people just to bring their family up to the mountains to see the snow for the first time for example. Its COMPLETELY different from dealing with snow in your daily life like in the midwest/east coast. Entire tourism industries exist here just for snow stuff, people even make their living putting chains on peoples cars at check points. You have to experience it to understand it really. People here own cabins/houses up in the mountains for snow activities too, like around Tahoe and such. My family had one while I was growing up, we would go up there and spend the weekend skiing (during the summer it was also great to go up there to escape the heat). The entire community of houses there was like that. |

-The regular Rav4 Hybrid is available just fine -The Rav4 Prime is the plug-in version, with 300hp, with an MSRP of nearly $50k in the upper spec, that most people are buying. I don't think anyone assumed it was going to sell like hot cakes. I know a gentleman who finally bought one, after calls to a dozen dealers, he finally found one willing to work at anything near msrp. Most dealers list them on their sites at msrp, then tell callers they have a wait list. It's a strange world, because the Telluride and Palisade have had the same reaction, and mostly in their very upper trim levels. Our local Hyundai dealer has every single Limited and Caligraphy trim sold before they hit the lot, and the Telluride SX trims is currently the quickest selling vehicle on the market, according to number of days on the lot. |

I like a lot about the iD.4. I hate the HVAC controls. So dumb.

All that white looks great in the showroom, but I doubt it will age well

Background: I took the Land Cruiser up skiing a few times this season instead of the minivan. Both of them are shod with Nokian Hakka winter tires. The Land Cruiser's interior volume and layout is subpar as compared to the minivan: try 90.8 vs. 140.5 cu ft cargo volume (!). The question: What's out there with AWD that would be more practical for my family and yet still fit in my normal size garage? Answers: AWD minivans: Pacifica non-PHEV, Sienna. (Why isn't there a 110% scale minivan in the lines of Astros of yore? The Metris, besides being FWD on these shores, is blocky but not larger.) Non-mini vans are generally out: Sprinters are too tall, Promaster only comes in FWD cargo variant, and the Transit would fit but its interior layout is crap. The Chevrolet Express would fit but again old-ass inflexible interior and AWD axed a few years back. A Suburban (or Escalade ESV or Yukon XL) would match the interior volume of the minivan and have AWD but would also be 22" longer. Meh. Not sure Super Cruise is worth that, even thinking ahead to a 5 years depreciated example. Its suspension design is cool, though. Conclusions: For now my wife values PHEV-ness over AWD-ness so her PacHy shall stay. My Land Cruiser shall also stick around for the next few years due to the second house's expenses. And maybe the VW ID Buzz will materialize and be exactly what I'm looking for. Or maybe I'll end up in an AWD Sienna down the road. Who knows? Last edited by shikataganai; 04-07-2021 at 02:12 PM. |

In case y'all were wondering, if I elected to drive a Ford Transit I'd probably configure it something like this XLT Long 250 High Roof, EcoBoost, 3.73 LSD, AWD. Wouldn't fit in the garage (or the work garage!), sure. But the headroom! My comment above about crap interior layouts still stands, though. Time to see if anyone has solved that on the cheap using the stock interior mount points. |

I haven't been in a transit in a while, but messing up rows of seats seems hard to do.

No flexibility out of the box afaik to set it up as a very roomy 3- or 4-row layout, or captain's chairs or the like. (Upfitters will do whatever, sure.) |

https://medium.com/@marshallhines/bu...e-1559080896e1 A Long (2nd from right; but not Extra Long, far right) version with the seating configuration of the middle layout, 2 + 2 + 2+1 + 3... That'd be a ton of storage space behind that last row and a decent path from door to all rows. |

Unrelated to your van quandary, but doing random car research on the new GV70, back seat tech is getting pretty crazy.

The aftermarket seems to have interior upgrades quite well covered for the big vans... at a price.
https://www.hqcustomdesign.com/gallery/1/1/5/35/12 That's quite nice. |

Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer are 150 cu ft interior volume and under 200" long. I agree SUV is not a passenger friendly as minivan, but if you need AWD...worth a compromise. Unless you're planning on running a shuttle service to your new house, I don't know why you'd want a van with 10 passenger seating. |

The point of a big van-like thing would be the ability to walk around in it and change comfortably. Although now that I think of it, the inability to use the close-in covered garage due to its height would be a huge downside, and with the house we won't have the same mad rush to get to the garage and get the kids into their gear quickly before their classes started that we do now. Still a fun thing to imagine a high roof van in the driveway. |

Yeah, the 150 was passenger volume.
I guess the equivalent "cargo volume" is behind first seat which is 80-90. I really thought they were closer inside to the minivans, but I guess not. Expedition/Tahoe are only slightly larger (210" length), but still can't compare with cargo (100-120). I owned an Express 2500 for a while. The idea of a full size van is funner than the reality. I doubt the driving dynamics have improved, especially for the tall boys. The added height also gives you the added bonus of not being able to use parking garages or most drive-thrus. But you won't have to worry about headroom! |

Why does fitting in the garage have to be a requirement?
Get what you want and park it outside. |

To loop back around to your previous point of not fitting in to the work garage, you reminded me of when I saw a high roof Transit wedged firmly in the entrance of the garage next to the UMC on the Boulder campus. Van looked to be about a foot too tall for the max height, but that driver just went for it.
