Again so jelly.
Other than some of the businesses that relied heavily on international tourists, things are pretty much back to normal. I think people realise the initial lock-down was needed. I'd like to think people would be prepared to do it again if required, but it will be tough. Seeing the high number of deaths in other countries would hopefully convince people to comply.

You guys spend heavily on travel abroad. I read an article where the people in power are courting the same travelers to spend that same money locally during the travel lockdown. Hopefully that will work out.

I don't know what could be more convincing that the number of dead people in the US and the EU. Just the US alone accounts for filling up Eden Park eight times.

Similar to here. We get the odd outbreak but Australians tend to be a reasonable bunch and realize the good of working through the lock downs that stop the virus in its tracks. We do all the things that detractors in the US scream don't work and then go back to a reasonably normal life once they have actually worked. I just wish they would hurry up and start the vaccine roll out here whilst the going is good.

Saw a report today. Worldwide commercial air travel ended December at 50% of its levels for the same period a year prior.

Private jet flights are only down 3% from the same period a year ago. And the bulk of those flights are leisure travel.

Despite the ban, California has had one of the worst winter COVID-19 surges in the country, which begs the following question: Is it possible that shutting down outdoor dining made the state's surge even worse?

Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at UCSF, believes it's highly likely.

"We won't be able to know the exact percentage it drove, but I would say closing outdoor dining certainly did not help and likely hindered efforts to avoid a surge," she said. "It shut down in early December, and things did not get better from there; things actually got worse. Restrictions should be about understanding the human condition and keeping places that are safe open. Those of us who argue for a harm reduction approach have the same goal as the lockdownists: We want to reduce transmission, but we understand the human condition and the need to be with people."

When announcing the new stay-at-home order, Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Mark Ghaly were repeatedly asked to show evidence that outdoor dining contributes to the surge of COVID-19. They provided no such evidence and said that the new business closures were about sending a message to minimize mixing.

********. As I said THE WHOLE ****ING TIME, and all studies and evidence prior to 2020 stated. General lockdowns are NOT recommended because they don't work.

Earlier this month — and without fanfare — the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Health and Environmental Laboratories reduced the cycle threshold for its real-time COVID-19 test from 42 to 35 cycles.

This comes after months of warnings by health professionals — including Dr. Anthony Fauci and the World Health Organization — that high cycle thresholds in the most commonly used tests were producing false positives.
I told you.

I'm not sure private flight contributes to the spread of disease the way commercial flight does. If my "pod" gets on a gulfstream together, we've now mixed my family with the air crew's families for a couple hours. That doesn't seem as risky as going to the airport to wait in the security line for half an hour with 10,000 other people (and it's a different 10,000 people at the end of that period than it was at the beginning) and then waiting at the gate area with 600 of them, getting on the plane and sharing the metal tube full of air with 300 of them, and then waiting for my luggage with those 300 people and a couple different groups of 300 people from other places. And it's all that mixing up among other groups that seems like the problem.

All it takes is the guy behind me in security to have it, breathing down my neck while we wait to go through the TSA scanner, because he's one of those "MASKS DON'T WORK" morons, and then who knows? The guy sitting next to me in coach for two hours and I could both wear our masks, I'm sure that's got to be better than if neither of us did, but wouldn't it be better for him, and for everyone he's near wherever he's going, if I wasn't even there because I took the gulfstream instead?

Signs warning of COVID-19 placed in high-risk areas of LA where cases, deaths are increasing
Quote:
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- COVID-19 signs in multiple languages are now posted in several Los Angeles neighborhoods, advising people they're entering a high-risk area where cases and virus-related deaths are increasing.

The bold signage is part of an effort by City Councilmember Gil Cedillo, who represents those neighborhoods. They've been erected in parts of the city's Westlake district, Pico Union, Highland Park, Koreatown and Lincoln Heights as cases skyrocket.

As of Jan. 18, there have been more than 800 coronavirus deaths and 43,635 positive cases across these areas, which Cedillo says face significant challenges.

"It is critical to make people aware of the dangers that still exist during the pandemic. There's no value in soft-selling the conditions. Particularly in parts of my district with challenges of poverty, immigration status and density," Cedillo said in a statement. "Because of that, we think it's important to let people know, what are the dangers and conditions that we're living in so that they will do the things that are necessary."

Officials say the warning signs are not meant to scare, but to educate.

"That's why we wanted to make it as powerful (and) as colorful as possible, so people can see that and they get reminded," said Luis Gonzales with Cedillo's office.

And so, the reminder is simple: wear a mask, wash your hands and stay six feet apart.

The signs also offer information on free testing and availability of vaccines to the communities that desperately need it.
COVID high water signs are a nice touch.

They have been keeping people in LA inside for going on 10 months now. It is obviously not working. When you have 6 people living in a 2 bedroom apartment it seems to transmit very easily.

It's a shock that nobody trotted out the "if you aren't doing anything about <insert problem here>, you aren't allowed to be concerned about COVID" argument any time in the past 11 months.

Shouldn't the takeaway be travel habits in general?

As long as your whole vacation has the same private jet approach, no crowds and minimal mixing the locals and/or crowds, you're probably right.

It's a global pandemic, the US has just been particularly ****ing terrible at handling it.

Global starvation is something we should all be ashamed of and work to resolve, maybe don't assume everyone else is a selfish ******* based on your own limited experience.

so USA is 1 for 0 with not letting Americans starve, but 0 for 1 with pandemics in the USA.

but then we're 0 for 1 with climate change, so I guess we lose overall.

Just nitpicking here... but I believe you mean 1 and 0, 0 and 1, respectively. 1 for 0 is impossible.

Define starve. We still have starving people and a lot of people without access to fresh, healthy and affordable food.

Yep! We had 3 decent vacations last year. Everyone would self quarantine for 2 weeks before vacation. Then drive to the vacation local. Clean on the way in to the venue (usually a beach house or rental cabin) clean periodically. Minimal contact with anyone outside of our group, 1-2 dedicated shoppers for the group with good cleaning protocols. We usually had a stretch of the beach to ourselves... we’re we “lucky”? Well, yes we were lucky that we had the resources to do this and be able to take vacations at all.

If memory serves, the line for the foodbank here in the DFW metroplex was over 5 miles long in mid April.

OK, I just got a weird email. I was invited to schedule a vaccine appointment through VAMS. They seem to think I'm a healthcare provider. I'm tempted.

VAMS seems to be a real thing BTW. It's the CDC's scheduling system and it looks like several states are using it to manage vaccination.
