Oh Hai Guys! long time no talk - finally a bunch of progress on my ol ****box - spent covid removing the old ignition system and finally wiring up the twelve R8 coilpacks - each pair on its own circuit breaker- the crank and cam position sensors - and I 3d printed an adapter for the webers to use a TPS off a Triumph Triple motorcycle - and got the Haltech Elite all up and running. its been a long couple years

this winter ill be redoing the fueling so I can get the EFI ITBs and injectors up and running

it hunts a bit on idle and off throttle since it cant really control any fueling but the car is now officially scary porsche fast - im guessing about 220bhp and it weighs 2174lbs with 10gal of gas on board

edit: spec refreshers - 1974 shell, 1983 3.0L converted to twin plug 8k rpm valvetrain, 964 EFI cams, 11:1 pistions, Clewitt cam and crank position sensors

I honestly try not to total up the receipts

its been a long strange trip the past couple years - left Porsche after 22 years two years ago- kinda hit the ceiling of progression - started doing System Architecture for a software dev and then a year into it covid hit so ive been working from home and finally have time

printed TPS sensor bracket - the actual arm kept breaking so temporarily I just used some brass pieces to ghetto fab one

this is the nut that holds the pass side carb bank throttle shaft in place

and i just made it so it would slip into the keyed opening on the sensor

Ive collected like 5 different sets of Triumph Triple throttles - these are the two ive settled on to pick from - one fits better but the other has a built in IAC valves which I think would be nice - the bars by the adjustable nut ****er are the fuel rails

driver lower bank of 3 coilpacks - I originally started out using Beru Panamera 9PA coilpacks but they have a weird ASIC processor in them and the Haltech cant trigger them correctly

i literally messed with just the coilpacks for a month before just giving up on $1200 with of coil packs... the audi R8 ones are much cheaper like $48/each and are apparently what all the haltech guys used (haltech support is pretty cool theyre remote into your ECU for remote support)

heres a video of me finally internally acknowledging the waste of money by using LED lights wired into the haltech harness on the coilpack outputs
http://www.fivebyfiveresearch.com/OT/leds.mp4

****if anyone needs cayenne 9PA Ccoilpacks ill make you a really good deal - theyre OEM Beru units*****

the well organized and labeled harness that I started out with

I ripped out the rear shelf because its not needed when not running the stock CDI stuff or in my case its where the MSD 6AL was - you can see the 20amp circuit breakers/pod each cylinders packs go to one breaker (so like 1A/1B 2A/2B)

oh and Ive added to the fleet - picked up a kinda insance 2004 RuF converted 996 turbo cab - it was a trade in that I snagged about a year before leaving - it was reworked at RuF in Texas before they closed - turbos, intercoolers, suspension, shifter, injectors, tune its about 600whp on the dyno

and I just bought an older Landrover Discovery II - got it for $750 - towing rating on it is 7k lbs so it can start lugging the 911 around and itll probably get some mild overland crap added to it after I finish fixing the floor - idea is cheap as chips build so I literally started just grinding off and cutting all the rust out and and repairing it with scrap I had laying around -

friends garage - Ive run out of space at my own place and hes got the welder and plasma torch - I am in no way shape or form a welder but this is a way of learning on garbage and while this looks like crap it aint going anywhere

After sitting in the closet for almost a year me and the daughter sat down and finally built the 1974 911 Turbo 3.0.

I was almost 100% hands off just directing her and made her identify and find every piece as well as try to figure out translating the 2d diagrams to 3D fitting and only stepped in if she got stumped

Help me, oh Porsche faithful.

I'm looking to get into a "fun car" shortly. I've been a 911 fan forever, having come this close (fingers really close) to buying various air cooled ones back when they were just out of reach of a practical engineer. In any case, to me, 911's are out of reach for what I'm willing to pay so I started looking at the Cayman. Yes, I've watched the everyday driver thing and Doug's review and read the motor trend article. I also am a LM fan, having gone to numerous races at Lime Rock and note that the 911 racecars are, in my mind a rebodied Cayman with the engine in front of the axle supposedly for aerodynamics......uh, ok.

A new GT4 is more money than I want to spend. I've owned an Elise, and my son owns an S2000. I'm looking for something more refined and less track oriented. Manual is required or why bother? The 4 turbo vs 6 are questions in my mind. 981 vs 718. Residual value in the future is important as I can't say any car would ever be a forever car for me. So practically, thinking perhaps 981 GTS vs 718 base. This will be a street only car. Maybe a lapping day now and then but not getting back into roadracing.

Are there things I'm overlooking? I have not yet driven a Cayman. Have driven various 911's in the past.

The cayman/boxster is such a good car The 718 has a slight bump in power and if I remember correctly the base 718 is as fast as the 981 S. That said IMO part of the driving experience is having that 6 cyl behind you.

The interiors are almost identical. The 718 got some minor exterior updates. I haven't spent anytime in a 718 but plenty of time in a 981 S (got to run around in it a couple weeks ago) I would stick with the 981 purely for the 6 cyl.

My parents road trip their 981 all around Florida very comfortable and I would think you will find it the perfect blend of a purpose built car that has all the luxuries for the street. Looking at 981 values I am pretty sure it could be sold for more that it was purchased for 2 years ago. I don't know if 718 values will stay as strong as people want the 6 cyl. There is a reason why Porsche has the Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0 out now.

Go test drive both but I would go 981 GTS.

Edit - One last note. I have driven a PDK Macan and it was as good as everyone says they are but I haven't driven it in the 981. The MT in the 981 is almost perfect at least in street application. Its smooth, the ratios seem spot on. I am sure in a 911 Turbo S you would want a PDK but I would absolutely want an MT in the 981.

As a former 981 GTS owner and current 991 gen 911 Turbo owner, I'll chime in here:

918 Cayman GTS - I had to the 6MT version and it was a fantastic *well-balanced* driver's car. The feel of the manual transmission is probably the best I've ever experienced with easy shifts but still rifle bolt action in feel. Handling is very neutral. It goes plenty fast enough but you have to rev to get to those speeds so the speed feels earned and also you don't end up going stupid fast triple digit speeds before you realize it so you can keep your speed in check most of the time.

My only and biggest gripe: the 6 speed manual gearing which is a problem in all the 6 spd manual Caymans, 981 and 718 gen and both gen of the GT4 as wel. 2nd gear is way too tall which kills a bit of the driving fun. Some GT4 owners will pay big bucks to get their 6 spd trans re-geared for a shorter ratios down low. The 7 spd PDK gearing is much better but it wont be the same fun.

I drove a 718 Cayman S, definitely more low end tq than the N/A 981 flat 6 engine, but you probably already know about the exhaust note of the 4 pot. I don't think its horrible, but I also think it doesn't sound like a Porsche sports car to me.

911 Turbo - feels much bigger, much larger, still fun to drive, but stupidly fast and powerful. I want to rev it out when I drive but find myself already going 110-120 when revving it out on the freeway in 3rd gear. While I enjoy the car, it has less of that driving purity feel of the Cayman.

I'm already planning in a few years I will sell the Turbo and look for 1 of 2 cars:

718 Cayman GTS 4.0 - basically a less hardcore and mildly detuned version of the 718 GT4 with a 6 spd manual, 380 hp is not shabby and the same power of the 981 GT4

991.2 GT3 Touring - this is the more aspirational purchase and assuming I can find one relatively low miles that won't go for a stupid ridiculous price and my finances are in order enough to lay down the cash, this would be my attainable dream car I think. 500 hp high revving N/A would be perfect.

I actually got to drive a friend's 991.2 GT3RS and ripped it up/down the local freeways. It's insane and a lot of fun, but its also like that friend who is fun at parties but doesn't know how to switch it off once the party is over. A regular GT3 being a little toned down works better for me.

Current 718S owner here. Regarding the 718, from a driving perspective, it's a better car all around than the 981, period. The steering is more refined, chassis feels tighter, and from a performance perspective the power difference is very noticeable. As was mentioned, the big difference is the 6cyl on the 981 vs the T4 on the 718. The 6 cyl is a bit weak down low compared to the 2.5L T4 in the 718S/GTS, but it's the more desirable option in the Porsche community due to the sound (hence Porsche adding the 4.0 6cyl on the new 718 GTS). If you drive both, you'll find the T4 gives you much more power all around with the low RPM torque - with the 981 you really need to ring it out north of 4k to feel the power, so around town it feels like a bit of a dog in comparison. In addition, the 718 will give you the new UI (touch screen, etc).

In driving the two, I preferred the 718S to the 981 GTS for the reasons above, although it's entirely subjective. Since it's a daily driver for me, I wanted more usable power and the newer UI, so the 718 was the winner. If it were a weekend car, I'd likely have gone with the 981 GTS since it would only be going on spirited drives, so I'd be mostly up in the revs/power. Some people love the howl of the 6, and some are fine with the growl on the T4. The bonus of the T4 is you can add a tune and easily get an additional 80-100hp, so if HP is your goal it's a better platform for tuning. Avoid the 718 base, as the 2.0 T4 is a bit anemic compared to the 2.5 IMO. On the 718 I'd recommend the PDK, as it really works in harmony with the Turbos (holding boost when off-throttle on sport and during shifts). For the 981 I prefer the three pedal option, as I think it just fits better with an NA engine.

If you're concerned with residual values, I think the 981 is the better bet, as the T4 in the 718 is relatively unloved in the Porsche community. I don't think the market will be kind to it, and IMO the 981's will do better than the T4 718 in the long run, even though the 718 outperforms the 981. Honestly you can't go wrong with either - drive both a see which one really speaks to you. For me, the 718S is the most fun car I've driven, and I'll likely hold onto it until I find a nice 911 GTS, Turbo or GT3 that I can afford

I'll also point out that in that price range, you're easily in the range of a nice 997 or 991.1 911

Agreed with this point, if value retention in your Porsche is a thing important, than getting a N/A flat 6 manual in either 981 Cayman or 911 flavors will hold their value more since they are increasingly unavailable as an option unless you go full GT car.

Yup, and it's exactly the reason I'll move on from my 718 at some point. Once you realize how the Porsche market works it makes it much easier to know which ones are 2-3 yr cars and which ones work more like piggy banks.

Yeah, as I mentioned above, I suspect my next Porsche purchase will probably be the last N/A Porsche I'll buy for a long time.

Thanks a lot for the great input! I do need to go drive them and there seem to be plenty of both 981 and 718s in the Boston area dealers.

The good news is that almost every 718 and 981 owner I've talked to at meets or PCA events loves their car, so you really can't go wrong either way . It'll boil down to a matter of personal preference and weighing the pro's and cons based on your intentions for it. Drive them both (and maybe a similarly priced 911) and you'll know what you prefer. Then, identify which options are on your wish-list (with Porsches there are A LOT) and start hunting!

Base RWD model of the Porsche Taycan announced for sale in US and UK, after tax rebates, MSRP in the mid $70k range to start.

https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/you-c...r-under-80000/

Quote:
Before today, buying a*Porsche Taycan*in the US was a six-figure layout. The first full battery electric vehicle from Porsche was only offered in packages starting from $103K for the Taycan 4S to $185K for the Turbo S (reviewed here).

Today, Porsche is now opening the floodgates to Taycan ownership with a base model offering starting at $79,900. With federal and state EV incentives, the price could drop below $70K. But what did Porsche cut to get the price there?

Still going to be 6 figures with minimal options.

The electric Macan they keep talking about will be their less-expensive EV.
