Default What the Puck!? "2020"-2021 NHL Season

Looks like there is no thread yet, so here we go. Supposedly camps could be opening in 10 days or so and a 56 game is planned starting 1/13/21.

With a temporary realignment to 4 divisions as follows (tentative).

(Canadian Division) Canadiens, Canucks, Flames, Jets, Maple Leafs, Oilers, Senators

Bruins, Sabres, Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins, Capitals

Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Panthers, Wild, Predators, Lightning

Ducks, Coyotes, Avalanche, Stars, Kings, Sharks, Blues, Golden Knights.

There's a lot to be decided yet though. Should be interesting.

In other news, Lundqvist has announced that won't be playing for the Caps this season. He has some sort of heart issue that will require further evaluation and treatment. Docs have advised he not play.

There was some discussion of them doing 4 bubbles, but that may be off the table now.

Hopefully we hear more solid plans real soon. I imagine we will with the potential start of training camps (hopefully) coming early in 2021.

Just waiting on final approval votes now. 56 game schedule to start mid January and wrap up in July.

Quote:
The NHLPA wants to progress under the terms of the tentative agreement for a 56-game schedule this upcoming season,*TSN's Pierre LeBrun reports.
The league, meanwhile, plans to hold a board of governor's meeting to vote at some point Sunday or Monday, according to*LeBrun.
Included in the agreement is a Jan. 3 start date for training camps with the season beginning Jan. 13, according to*Stephen Whyno of The Associated Press. The seven teams that didn't make the 2019-20 playoffs can open camps on Dec. 31, Whyno adds. The dates are subject to change.

The agreement also calls for no exhibition games, and teams will jump directly into the regular season,*Sportsnet's Chris Johnston*reports.
The NHL is reportedly aiming to split the 31 teams into four divisions. The top four in each will make the postseason, and every division will produce a champion for the Stanley Cup semifinals, according to*Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
The league still faces hurdles while establishing a plan to limit travel and cross-border complications for its seven Canadian clubs. The initial idea was to form an all-Canadian division and have each team play out of its home arena. However, the strategy hit a*snag*Thursday because the league hasn't received the required approval from provincial and municipal health units.
Players can opt out of the upcoming season if they or an immediate family member is considered high risk, and their team would have the option of tolling their contract for the year, according to*TSN's Frank Seravalli.
Besides the recently pandemic-shortened season, the league hasn't used a schedule with fewer than 82 games since the lockout-shortened 48-game campaign in 2012-13.

Chara signs with the Caps for 800k. Not sure how I feel about it, but at least he's cheap.

Congrats to Team USA! And a shutout no less.

T minus 1 week until the season officially starts!

The sponsored divisions is sort of odd, no?

* Scotia NHL® North Division (Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg)
* Honda NHL® West Division (Anaheim, Arizona, Colorado, Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Jose, St. Louis, Vegas)
* Discover NHL® Central Division (Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Florida, Nashville, Tampa Bay)
* MassMutual NHL® East Division (Boston, Buffalo, New Jersey, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington)

Nothing like our young #1 center publicly expressing how he wants traded

I dunno why our best players leaving is becoming the norm in Columbus, but there's something going on. We love overpaying our glue guys, though...

And YouTube TV still doesn't have an agreement with the regional Fox Sports networks, so I won't even be able to watch them unless it's a national game (of which we got 4! I can't believe we got more than our usual 1).

His contract is based on performance with an additional $750k in bonuses. Like if he plays 20 games he gets another $250k. If they make the playoffs he gets another chunk, and if they win the cup he gets a big boost.

That said, I was shocked when this came out. Not as shocked as you guys losing Lundy for the season, but still shocking.

That said, I'm looking forward to Nate Schmidt and the Holtbeast to join our squad. Even with the twitter backlash regarding his mask art

Yeah, the bonuses do make him a little more costly. I hope he makes them for the fans and teams sake. I don't like how ancient the team is though. Not good, but they are certainly heavy and physical.

There's a Caps reunion going on there in Vancouver now! Schmidty was a fan favorite here and pretty great in LV. And Holtby, sad to see him go. Good acquisitions there.

I support Chara up to the Stanley Cup. He already has one dammit!

I'm not sure if this is going to be a good year for the Canucks but I'm excited to see what they can do out there. The division breakdown is absolutely bonkers.

And how about the former Canucks reunion in Calgary?!
Markstrom, Lievo, Tanev, Nesterov... and Lucic, who is from here but never wore a Canucks jersey.

Damn Calgary, you gonna take our blue and kelly green too?

Crazy how quickly that game turned from Caps able to go up 5-2 to tied 4-4 just like that.

Also, that game is the first time in 10+ years (probably more because no stats are available) that a team has scored on a 5 on 3 PP, AND scored SH on a 5 on 3 PK. The Caps suck and will likely get crushed tonight with a bunch of guys out due to COIVID protocols.

As a hockey fan I love the 5 hole dangle. As a goalie, I absolutely hate when there's a b-way and buddy makes a bunch of moves only to go 5 hole. It's a tough position for a tendy since we're trying to make the lateral move expecting the dangle, only for the shooter to flick his wrist and put it between your legs.

How are you watching the greatest sport on ice? I'm having trouble finding a good streaming service. Issues with regional fox sports networks. Sux

I hate being overseas during hockey - the games are way too late.

**** PLD. I’m glad the jackets moved him. Unfortunately it’s for a dude who is gonna clash with Torts and will walk next year anyways.

PLD’s whole situation is weird. Went from being completely fine to requesting a trade without telling anyone why. He never told the media, the team, nor his teammates why he wants out. He’s a bitch.

I took him in my pool, so this was a stressful situation for me. Let alone what he went through. I can't imagine the feeling around the rink if Torts doesn't like you. That would be awkward.

Hopefully Laine lights it up for you, and PLD can find a place to fit in. The jets are looking stronger already.

Seems like a good trade all around there. I wonder if Torts wears out his welcome with the players before he runs Laine off. 5-6 years seems to be Tortarella's shelf life.

I'm disappointed the Caps only play Buffalo 4 more times this year after going 3-0-1 and 7 points against them already. I expect them to get smoked by NYI tomorrow night.

It sucks not seeing any teams other than the Canadians in our division. We've played the Oilers and habs twice already, and that didn't work out so well for my Canucks.
Or my pool

Torts contract is up at the end of this season. Hopefully he fades off into the wild blue, as I despise that man. But with the nepotistic way the NHL is run, chances are he going to be around for a long time. Hell, they still talk about bringing Marc Crawford back

Pens GM, Jim Rutherford, resigns citing personal reasons.

Thanks for everything that you've done here, JR!

Good luck and best wishes!
