Nice. Definitely a rewarding endeavour. I'm currently listening to my dad's Kenwood 5150 reciever...also mid 70's era. I also have a Sansui similar to the one I posted that belonged to my wife's grandfather. That one I refurbished.

My Luxman R117 R channel gave up the ghost. I looked at info to repair it but I am not good with electronics or PCB, and this thing is a beast to work on and not a novice project. Not all the capacitors or resistors are even available to fix it. I'll park that for a bit and look for another vintage receiver. My requirement on these is to have the VU Meters on the face, like yours. That limits me somehow, along with my budget. I'll probably settle for a Pioneer SX-580 or 680 (780 is too rich for my taste).

It is from 1972 (so is 6 years older than me...)
I started using it back in the mid 2000s. Great warm sound. I prefer the accuracy of modern equipment but the older sound is nice and relaxed.

Yes 2, was thinking just running your analog pre outs to it and then the summed output to the sub. Then you could listen in pure direct mode with your mains never re entering digital domain. Not 100% sure what the avr does with the lfe channel when in direct mode, If it leaves it open you should be able to leave it connected to the sub, if it actively mutes (shorts) the inputs I'm not sure what the sub how the sub will deal with it.

There are other minidsp with more inputs and you can get quite creative with all the plug ins available and configure them to do just about anything reallly.

Very lovely, even if it has those new fangled transistors

Would pair nicely with an omega seamaster constellation or I guess king seiko would be more appropriate

I have a tube receiver that needs a recap. Haven't had time to start it. Don't want to leave it half done or it'll never go back together!

I had one of those in the 70s. It sounded awesome. Wish I still had it.

That's a 9090DB. I have a "plain" 9090. I'm good with that since the dolby circuit is known to be problematic and nontrivial to repair.

My parents tossed a fantastic analog receiver and 8 track tape deck years back, and it kills me. I now have two consoles, one fully tube and one solid state. The SS one needs a driver replaced but plays vinyl well. I'm sad that I can't easily fix the other, from what I've tested, something in the amp seems to only power one channel (it alternates) at a time.

my initial thoughts at the moment is I'm chasing after fleeting gains. My receiver is already one of the better models out there (Anthem MRX720) and it is not like I'm dealing with a treated listening space. I'm just trying to get the cleanest possible signal in before amplification because I have been detecting some distortion at louder volumes. I'm now attributing it to lack of power. Even then, doubling the power will only get me 3db more output but at the previous output level there will be less distortion and it will be safer on the mains.

Seems like decent power, unless your speakers are super power hungry, but maybe you should try a cleaner amp for your mains? That MRX is spec’ed at 1% THD with 2 channels driven. Not that hot... I run separates, and my 5 channel system has a 5x140 watt Marantz MM7055 power amp, which sounds very good imo. They make a 2 channel variant, the MM7025 that is 2x140 watt with .08% THD. Or you just use the MRX as a pre and could go with the Marantz MM8077, which is 7x150 watts at .08% THD.

MRX720 is 140 wpc, I'm looking at either a Starke Sound AD4.320 (430w*2 when bridged) or ATI AT542NC (500w*2). Intention being it is far safer to overdrive than underdrive a speaker, and the BP9060s are good for 300W.

Nice looking amps. I wasn’t familiar with Starke Sound. Interesting looking “hybrid” amp. I’m sure the increased power and much cleaner signal with either of those amps will help tremendously. Separates are the way to go, imo.

I had noticed the MRX’s power, but was mentioning the Marantz as having the same power, but with significantly better THD specs. I see the Starke and ATI are even cleaner!

yeah, at the time I wasn't going to roll with separates for budgetary reasons (since I was starting from scratch and buying EVERYTHING all in one go) and the Anthem was one of the best reviewed AVRs in the $2500 or so price range. Now I'm gradually updating things piece by piece... The limit now is power as I only have a single 15A circuit available to my rack in the living room and the breaker panels are already oversubscribed by 3x(!!!).

I've got some new stuff on the way.

After nearly a decade of enjoying the hell out of the sound of my 7 channels of Hsu Research horn bookshelf speakers, I've decided to switch it up while downsizing much of my setup. I've enjoyed the warm sound of the SVS satellites in my office 5.2.2 so much that I've decided to swap out the sides and rears in my main viewing/listening space with a couple pairs of these, while swapping out the from stage with SVS's Ultra bookshelves and center. I'm excited to demo these in my space and try something new.

Step one: pass all cables through the wall

Step 2: go to Amazon and purchase the Banana plugs, because you forgot

Hey guys, looking for some suggestions. Recently got a new XBOX and looking into replacing my existing 50" 1080 LED with a modern 55". Went to Best Buy yesterday and almost walked out with a Samsung Q70T as it was rated pretty well for the price, however it was out of stock. The salesman pointed me to an LG CX series, which was significantly more expensive (1,450ish) but had great ratings and it was OLED--also out of stock.

He mentioned the TV manufacturers are gearing up to release this year's new sets. I saw Samsung is releasing its new Quantum Dot technology, which as I understand, is essentially its version of OLED. Thoughts on this? I'm not in a huge rush, but don't mind spending some $ on a nice TV. My use case is Xbox gaming, and Netflix movie/show watching in the bedroom, which is generally dark. I'll hang up and listen, thanks

I have the Samsung Q70 and it’s great. I really like the interface of the smart features too. Buy it online?

There should be sales coming up pre-super bowl.

Wait. Not many tvs are doing VRR and 4k 120hz well.

I think Reflex is enjoying his CX series - but I'd wait for the 2021 tvs to take full advantage of all that the Xbox offers. Did you get the series X?

Otherwise I'd consider Sony's 900h series, which are at costco

I have the LG C9. The CX uses the same panel and are both amazing. Absolutely don't regurt the purchase.

Related gripe: streaming services that don't support 5.1 through their browsers. Easy enough to download their app to the TV, but it's annoying.

Welp, so I did this
This is my weird rear speaker arrangement.

Moved all speaker wires inside wall

Surprisingly, the rear speakers sound really good once calibration is done.
Played some movies and the Polk sound very nice. Much nicer than the Sony Core they replaced.

Now to facespace to try and sell the old bookshelf speakers
