Well in my research into a Bluetooth receiver for my 2 channel system, I learned two things: iPhones only use the lower quality AAC codec, vs the much higher quality aptX codec available on Android devices. Secondly, my “ancient” Airport Express’s 1/8” analog jack ALSO functions as a 1/8” optical toslink port. So I’m now streaming Youtube via AirPlay to the AE and going through my Topping D30 DAC optically, instead of using the crappy AE onboard DAC. Sounds awesome, has better resolution than BT, and I only had to buy a 1/8” toslink adapter and dust off my 12 year old AE to setup streaming on my 80’s preamp. This analog luddite is gettin’ fancy!

Decided to finally get a nice pair of headphones. I picked up some Hifiman Sundara with a Liquid spark amp.

This will be my first nice pair of headphones. Hopefully they are worth the hype.

after just over 6 weeks my deftech BP9060 was repaired again yesterday. The shop kept it running overnight to ensure that it is still working this morning to avoid the situation last time where it died 2 hours after being repaired.

Once I get it back I have to make the decision to possible sell them and replace them with a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 500s or not (I don't think I can spring for the Gold 300s at this point in time.) If I do upgrade I'm going to need to pair them with a better amp for the output levels I tend to enjoy yet the amp I want is backordered until February https://www.starkesound.com/detail.html?id=47

So I happened to find myself within 20 mins of Abt and had about 20 mins to spare over the weekend, so I took the opportunity to pop in there and have a look around. I had been in the "new" location in Glenview right after they moved there, so 15-18 years ago.

Man, that store is impressive!

They have a theater room display that's insane. There was a paper with all the components in the room, yeah it was a 480k room.

That lumpy grid, I believe, is the optional Planar Video Matrix TV Display for 80k more!

curious for other folks out there running either external DACs or other form of analog input to a modern AVR:

When I disable processing on the analog input (bypassing room correction and also bypassing an analog to digital and then back to analog processing chain, basically just amplifying the unmolested analog input) I get no output to my subwoofer. Curious if anyone else has seen similar behavior on other AVRs with a "pure" mode for analog inputs?

and after a little bit of research, I find this is all by design since an AVRs bass management is done exclusively in the digital domain, in order to get a signal on the LFE output, the source signal has to be converted to digital, processed, then converted back to analog again. I guess I'm sunk unless I employ a splitter on the source and a switch on the sink significantly complicating the wiring. Interesting.

Maybe your AVR sets front speaker audio only when you set "pure" mode. Expecting you to have proper large speakers as fronts.

Ive seen my Sony 1080 do something like that, but I just use the normal 2.1 speaker setup for audio. 5.1.2 for classical music though.

edit: late reply

I was purchasing in wall speakers to use as rear surround.
The bookshelves I had on stands occupy too much space of my small and weird living room. I promised the Ms Id put in wall to make it look much nicer, plus wire inside wall the fronts too. Clean up that wire mess behind the TV.
Incoming Polk RC85i to replace my Sony Core bookshelf

yeah, per my second comment, this is apparently by design, all AVRs have zero output on LFE because bass management is done in the digital domain.

I do have full range fronts but it is annoying to have my $2300 sub just sitting there doing nothing but enjoying the ambiance. :-P

That's the point of "pure" mode?

yes, taken holistically it makes sense now. I'm trying to figure out a workaround.

I just received the Polk Audio RC85i in wall speakers to replace my rear surrounds that were in stands.

Jesus, I should have measured prior to purchasing.
I went from 5" to 8" (woofer)

Will report on how the aim-able tweeter works for my case. Left speaker will be in a rear wall parallel to the seating area, right speaker on a wall perpendicular to the seating area. I got no other place to put them. The current ones I got sounded great in those positions though.

Do the subs have L + R inputs?

Meaning can you feed the Fronts into the subs and back out to the fronts?

Its actually kinda hard to do high pass on fronts with delicate audiophile sensibilities in tact. Almost everything will do this in dsp, which means an extra cycle of ADC to DAC. I am happy doing this with a minidsp for my sub but apprehensive on mains so run them full range.

Comercial subs should have the low pass filter and phase adjustment built in so you can run a pre out right to it, but I could see it getting tricky if you want 2.1 with room correction enabled and are unwilling to let the avr convert analog sources or perform primarily music dac functionality.

I have used mini dsp nanodigi as well where you can implement a crossover) in line with the digital coax and then use 2 decent dacs (one for mains and one . Works well but too many boxes for me.

Not really a home theater guy. I thought the common solution was to use an integrated or pre with a home theater bypass but can this hand over the sub channel to the avr along with the mains?

The sub does have L+R inputs, but it is the same input used for LFE...

what I'm thinking I can do is run some sort of RCA signal replicator (1 into 2) so I can have a pair of cables out to the sub and to the receiver, then run LFE to the sub as well, with 3 RCA cables into a switch before the sub, (L+R, LFE).

Problem is there aren't many 2 input RCA switches with RF control these days. Seems almost more trouble than it is worth. Signal quality gains of bypassing the ADC->DAC of the receiver is sort of offset by losing room correction since uncorrected I have some 10-12db peaks.

Cabling will get a bit easier when i get a new amp for L+R since I can run XLR from the DAC into the Amp, and RCA From the DAC into the sub. (DAC outputs simultaneously on XLR and RCA.)

I spose the definition of "more trouble than it is worth" is pretty much the tagline of audiophile BS.

Mini dsp 2x4hd will do exactly what you want if you dont mind the extra ADA cycle for the sub on 2.1

Use it to sum l and r pre outs to mono, apply eq to get rid of peaks if you want, and then plug analog out to other sub input. You can switch it in or out with IR remote.

yeah at that point im trading one cycle in the receiver for one in the minidsp, and it looks like the minidsp 2x4 has only 2 RCA inputs?
