Finally:

Had to do a firmware update on the receiver and messed with the settings, sounds good and wife didn’t hear it from the 2nd floor but I didn’t really have it too loud as the kids were already asleep.

Do you have any issues with the acoustics there with the floors?

Was playing this Gojira show on YT in the basement 20 mins ago and got the “WTF are you listening to down there?” Text from the wife. I mean she hates Gojira, plus I had it on loud.

http://youtu.be/GuOQxYxWntU

So low wife acceptance factor.

I still need to adjust the receiver and I moved the speaker placement a bit tonight too, but acoustics reverberating up the walls is going to be an issue for her...hahaha

Have you tried moving the towers in towards the display a bit and corner loading that sub?

while I sort out my whole speaker situation... I just setup a Roon server, subscribed to Tidal HiFi, ordered a raspberry pi4 and a USB MQA-capable DAC (SMSL SU9).

bad thing is, I think I might have just temporarily harmed my left ear with the 24bit 48khz version of Deftones White Pony via my headphones and my JDS Labs O2+ODAC.

I got into Roon a few months ago and absolutely love it. Sounds great and really simple to pipe music to different stereos on our home network. We have a huge digital library (ripped CDs and high resolution files), plus Tidal hifi. Really fantastic for discovering and rediscovering.

That room needs a floor rug and some art on the walls! Looks like a great system though.

I spent hours yesterday cleaning up my 20 year old library. When I got done I questioned why I bothered since I can't even tolerate old school 128kbps mp3 anymore. but I have way more FLAC then I used to and controlling Tidal HiFi via Roon will be slick.

I’d make a list of the low quality mp3 tracks, match them in Tidal within Roon, then make sure the hi-res Tidal version is preferred.

I did that with my huge iTunes library, which is mostly lossless, but does have some lossy AAC files. The processing took a long time, but it did a pretty good job. I still had to do a bit of cleanup.

I did move the towers in towards the display. I have to get some more slack out of the wires that are run up through the wall and will probably have to drill a new hole in the wall and run them that way, but I'm going to wait to do that. So put the sub in the corner instead of near the display? A quick search the other day showed subs near the display.

What's a good resource for figuring out speaker placement?

Yeah he did. He's a beast. I just wish they had played Heaviest Matter in the Universe, but they played my 2 fav songs, Flying Whales and L'enfant Sauvage, so I'm pleased with the setlist.

Rug - naw. Art on the walls, probably, but I want to paint the walls before we decorate. But the walls have that stupid texture on them that we both HATE. I don't know how hard it will be to remove that texture from them, if it's even worth it, so we need to figure that out before paint.

a throw rug will go a long way towards eliminating unwanted audio reflections. I can't recommend it enough, plus it just looks better.

I get that it helps acoustically. Last house was mostly carpet except the kitchen area. New place is all hardwood floors on the main level. It's INSANE the amount of dust and doghair the floors collect. I'm allergic to dust (SWEET) and take allergy meds daily. Seeing the amount of dust that accumulates so quickly in the new house makes me never want carpet on the floors again (though the 2nd floor has all new carpeting here, which the dog is not allowed upstairs.

I wouldn't want to deal with the cleanup part of a rug down there. Roomba is on the main floor, the Dyson is upstairs in the 2nd floor. Don't want to buy another vacuum. It's a real 1st world problem.

Blue-sun - read the Klipsch manual on how to position your speakers.

They seem way to far apart.

https://www.klipsch.com/blog/how-to-set-up-a-7-1-system

I'd def move the sub to the corner. Most photos you see are usually for aesthetic purposes / have oversized subs for the room.

Oh also run your audyssey or room tuning software the receiver has.

Thanks, I'll check out their guide.

My Pioneer came with a plug in microphone that you'd place where you'd sit and it would adjust through that. I think I tossed it, because I can't find it anywhere.

Subwoofers - I have the Klipsch SW12.

Placing it on a (memory foam) mat on hardwood floor a good idea or bad?

Habit from the prior place where the landlord living beneath me and I wanted to damped the sound going through the floors.

I use decouplers on all my subs that are on hardwood floors. The ones I use are soft rubber, but I'd suspect foam would also do the trick.

ooh ok. So reading up on this and it would seem that you do want to dampen it.

yeah, seems it will prefer the Tidal HiFi versions where applicable.

Processing my library didn't take as long as I thought it would but I did give Roon access to 6 cores out of the 12 on my server. Took about 8 hours to scan/pre-process 32k tracks. After it was done it took me about 12 hours to clean things up (delete duplicates and so on.)

Just got notice that my DAC will be shipping direct from China and I should have it on the 24th. woot.
