One thing the general public seems to have a really hard time with is that viruses do not spread synchronously. Europe and N America are different frikken continents with no contiguous landmass. The initial spikes when this first emerged were separated by weeks and even months of time, around the world.

Europe could be a week (or two) ahead of us on the curve, easily. No one should be drawing ANY conclusions about the relative "size" of the current peaks, while both places are still in the midst of exponential growth. You can't look at the data today and conclude in any way that we are going to have a smaller peak than Europe. Or vice versa. Anyone doing so is feeding you a false narrative. That's it.

My first comment was based simply on local observations. Maybe they're the same in other places.

There is a very specific type of person that is willfully making the decision to put others at risk. You know who they are. They are the problem. Their beliefs are the problem. The complete and utter disregard for the safety and care of others is infuriating. This s**t COULD be managed. But its not and it probably won't.

They're not wearing a mask.

That type of person.

I dunno, around here I've seen 'em come in different shapes and sizes and colors.

But they don't want to wear a mask. That's the unifying thing.

...and throw on top of all of this the number of them that will refuse a vaccine if its made widely available.

How will this be managed? Will we let the anti-vaxxers/idiots dictate our future?

I just called my parents yesterday to let them know the wife and I wouldn't be coming to thanksgiving. They were planning to host my sister and her family (6 folks) plus us. That is a hard pass for us especially since my sister isn't really following the rules. Technically speaking our area is under "phase two" restrictions limiting gatherings to 6 people.

I feel bad for my parents because my dad is high risk but he is basically YOLOing it up at this point.

Christmas is probably going to be right-out as well.

Any closure will have to come from the federal level, because in quite a few states, courts have struck down governor's orders, and many state legislatures have refused to do anything.

The CDC has finally seemed to realize we're not turning the corner in two weeks. Forecasts now show weekly case #s continuing to rise for the next month. Previous forecasts showed it flattening out.

No comparison needs to be drawn besides 'we are experiencing <an increase> and they are experiencing <an increase>' in similar manners, no matter who is ahead a week or behind. I mean you pretty much say 'America sucks'; the graph easily shows that while that may or may not be true, either everyone else sucks too, or there's something else at play here beyond your ****ty political darts thrown at the other 50% of the population. Maybe we suck. Maybe they suck. Or maybe, just maybe, it's a product of loosening restrictions which CANNOT be maintained indefinitely; the onset of winter, and staying indoors; increased testing; many other things. Of course you head straight for the 'why I hate America' aisle though....

If you never had a curfew, or driving restrictions based on your license plate number, you never had any sort of a lockdown and claiming otherwise just shows how delusional "freedumbers" are. You just couldn't go to concerts, you ****ing babies.

Do you really think that someone who doesn't want to put some new, rushed-through, relatively untested vaccine using previously unused technology into their body is an 'anti-vaxxer'? What if that person has accepted <every other standard vaccine>, but is wary of this one? Are they still an anti-vaxxer?

The efforts to paint people with these brushes is fascinating.

Don't want the covid vaccine until it's proven? >> antivaxxer found >> you're a kook and should be interned

My family is fully vaccinated, but won't be taking this one right off the bat. I'll let you be the guinea pig. I'm not ready to take that risk to mitigate the .003% chance my family has of dying from covid.

I see Mr. Sealion is still all over this. I made the mistake of viewing his post quoting me, what a sad life to put words and assumptions into someone else's mouth and treat it as 'probably fact'. Ignoring reality about vaccine availability, creating ridiculous all or nothing arguments, and largely ignoring the overall positive and hopeful theme to my post, and my wish for Americans to be better. Instead, obfuscate, attack, keep going. It's actually depressing to see, and a problem with many Americans as a whole.

Back to the actual thread, Halloween night was very busy in my neighborhood as well. I'm in a mixed neighborhood, so it was probably 50/50 on mask wearing versus not for the adults. We made a table at our front door with individually separated and wrapped candy to prevent so may hands in bowls. Has anyone seen any uptick in cases that could be due to trick or treating? I haven't followed the spike trends around holidays or major gatherings, but usually there is at least some association it seems.

Of course the selfish libertarian pricks would think that criticizing them and their behavior is the same thing as "hating America".

I mean, it's so cliche it's a goddamn meme...

Newsflash: you do not typify, define, or embody what America is any more than anyone else here.

That this could've been handled better is hardly up for debate, and I hope things change going forward.

This is why I don't care. Yes I still abide by anyone's mask rules. Yes I know how to wash my hands. But here are the important facts. Also yes I've had to be in quarantine after contact tracing from a known positive. I had 2 days of a lessened sense of taste, but the army doesn't test unless you have acute symptoms (or ironically are a new trainee coming in).

Instead people are getting quarantined in droves, for something that is doing nothing to the overwhelming majority of the force. Simply put we can't get **** done. To keep treating it like it's the kiss of death is assinine.

This Thanksgiving will be a wonderful repeat of history...Americans passing on a disease to those unable to fight it off.

And to treat it like it's no big deal unless you die is ignorant of everything we know about the disease.

Also, death is a lagging indicator. Let's see if those charts are still flat in two weeks...

I'd like to make 2 points in response.

Point 1: I would agree that treating it like the kiss of death would be asinine, if we in fact had a largely effective and widely available treatment plan with high success rate, and we also had a highly effective and safe vaccine, properly vetted and within acceptable safety measures. We are lucky 2-5 pharma companies are closing in on this, so we might be able to treat this novel virus as a 'flu' in the nearish future. Right now the standard yearly influenza has a vaccine covered by every health insurance or government plan, available in several variants for various health and age populations. We have highly effective treatment plans AND highly effective medications to offset severe complications in MOST instances. COVID has neither at this time, unless you are a high ranking political person or corporate person who can pay to flex the distribution. This isn't judgement on politicians or rich./important people, this is just fact. People will still die, life is a bitch like that. We should not be doing anything to increase that possibility with so many deadly unknowns, and we should not go 'oh well' to the ones who do die, regardless of age or any other factor. These are fellow Americans for God's sake.

Point 2: Deaths going down doesn't matter as much if the new cases keep increasing dramatically. The ratio may be going down for deaths per case; but the case is spiking so it offset and actually increases death counts....so it's still not something to take lightly unless you don't mind family members of the older/underlying condition kind dying. A ratio of 10:1,000 death/case rate 5 months ago may have been worse than a current rate of let's say 100:15,000, but you still have 90 more deaths in the same time frame. Our medical staff and treatments are getting better due to simple experience being shared, but we cannot and should not test the system because of it.

I'll finish off by saying that we are stuck in a lose-lose situation because not enough proper steps were taken early, and the spread went too unchecked and population not properly educated and misinformed early and often by high ranking politicians and leaders. As such, the sentiment is to resist wearing masks, and resist treating this virus properly, and it is leading to the new cases. There is also 'COVID fatigue' in which it has been going on long enough, even good natured people who KNOW the severity are getting lax. My wife among them. The sentiment of 'I just want to get it to get it over with' is not something only one political demographic holds; it's human nature to get mentally tired of stuff like this. It's still important to treat it properly, not just for yourself, but those around you, your community, your fellow Americans. Hell, maybe we would have been able to keep more businesses open if EVERYONE bought in to wearing masks, hand sanitizers, and social distancing right away, NONE of those require complete shut downs except for specific industries. It would have been a small price to pay for many businesses to stay open, but civil disobedience can be as much a detriment as it can be patriotic.

Agreed x 100.

340, I'm glad your experience with COVID was mild. Truly. This is good. But it is not at all the universal experience. The suggestion is still that about half the cases are mild, like yours, and the rest range from "not-so-mild" to "****ing hell" to "permanent injury" to "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee."

I agree, it's not worth treating it like it's instant death. But let's treat it with as much respect as we can muster.
