Covid: Who will have the Pfizer vaccine first and when can I get it?

A vaccine which can prevent nine out of 10 people getting Covid-19 is set to be put forward for emergency approval.

Its developers, Pfizer and BioNTech, said it had been tested on 43,500 people, with no safety concerns raised.

What is the new vaccine and how effective is it?
The vaccine trains the immune system to fight coronavirus.

It is a new type of vaccine called an RNA vaccine and uses a tiny fragment of the virus' genetic code. This starts making part of the virus inside the body, which the immune system recognises as foreign and starts to attack.

It is given in two doses - three weeks apart - and early data suggests it protects more than 90% of people from developing Covid symptoms.

Has this type of vaccine ever been used before?
There are no RNA vaccines that have been approved for use in humans.

The concept has been researched before and people have been given them in clinical trials for other diseases.

The vaccine will be considered by regulatory agencies around the world, and they will decide whether the jab can be approved for use.

Who will get it first and how soon can I have it?
It depends how old you are, as age is the biggest risk factor for severe Covid-19.

In the UK, older care home residents and care home staff are top of the preliminary priority list. They are followed by health workers such as hospital staff and the over 80s.

People are then ranked by age, with people under 50 at the bottom of the list.

The first jabs may take place before Christmas if everything goes smoothly.

The vaccine will be delivered through care homes, GPs and pharmacists as well as "go-to" vaccination centres set up in venues such as sports halls.

However, there are logistical challenges to overcome - such as the need to keep the vaccine at minus 80C during transportation from the manufacturing lab to vaccination venues. The jab must be thawed before it is given to a patient and can be stored in a normal fridge for a few days before being administered.

Will it offer lasting protection?
It is impossible to know and we will find the answer only by waiting.

If immunity does not last then it may be necessary to have a vaccine every year, in the same way as for flu.

The data did not show whether protection from Covid-19 was the same in all age groups. However, earlier studies did suggest young and old people could produce an immune response.

There will also be some people - such as those with a weak immune system - who will not be able to have the vaccine.

Could the vaccine have long-term health effects?
Nothing in medicine is 100% safe - even something we take without thinking, like paracetamol, poses risks.

The data so far is reassuring - trials on 43,500 people discovered no safety concerns, although mild side effects have been reported.

If there were highly dangerous and common consequences of this vaccination, they should have become apparent.

However, rarer side effects may emerge as millions of people are immunised.

Will it mean we don't need lockdown?
Hopefully yes, but not for some time.

If enough people are immune then the virus would stop spreading and we would not need other measures for controlling the virus.

The challenge, however, is getting from now to that point.

There is still the monumental challenge of manufacturing enough vaccine and actually getting it into people. It is all going to take time and we need something to control the virus until then.

So, testing, lockdowns, social distancing, and mask wearing are going to be a feature of our lives for a while yet.

What if the virus mutates?
Viruses mutate all the time, it's what they do. The question is, will they mutate in a way that changes their behaviour?

So far there is no sign of that happening, but it is possible that in the future the virus may change so the vaccine becomes less effective.

If that happens, then a new coronavirus vaccine may need to be designed.

This is not unusual. A new flu vaccine is developed each year to try to match the strains of flu that are doing the rounds.

And the RNA vaccine technology is very easy to tweak so this should not be a major problem.

Hoax, we all know those maps are old, the virus went away after Biden won PA electoral votes, because all those people were actors. They can start removing the ICU 'patients' on ventilators, the actors laying still in the morgue, and for God's sake please unbury those actors in the graveyards, those people earned their pay! Talk about dedication to their acting careers and their contracts to the Democratic party and this ruse. True American Spirit.

Greetings from SEWI. Ugh. Don't know what to say, other than a lot of people are kinda dumb. My wife included, unfortunately.

Me = 51 y/o, a couple underlying health issues put me in a high risk group, working from home (mostly, and have thanked my lucky stars every day that I am working and getting paid) for a non-profit that currently has a 'completely out of money' date of May, 2021, and am a licensed EMT.

I tend to zero in on the county in which I live as far as monitoring the COVID-19 situation, since our organization serves members that reside in our county. I think our Dept. of Public Health has a nice website that is updated daily:
https://waukeshacounty.maps.arcgis.c...ea692f69f9d5c1

Bad:
Worry, fear, isolation, mental health issues, spending money on music gear, work is stressful and time consuming, lack of 'me' time.

Good:
Not putting many miles on the car, playing more guitar than ever (mostly because I need to for parts of work) and starting to see improvement in my ability (I'm a drummer by trade), can enjoy (discreetly) beer during staff zoom meetings.

The deniers know these kids are dying, just not enough of them are dying to care. I wish I was lying, but it is born out in their words and arguments all day every day.

I still believe that we wouldn't be here had the government implemented a federal mask wearing mandate and proper social distance guidelines. We'd still have kids dying, we'd still have 'don't tread on me' morons picking personal and political convenience over trying to do the right thing for their fellow Americans, but a federal mandate may have cut our cases in half, and hell, might have save Trumps job. As ridiculous as it sounds, I'd take Trump as president in 2021 over all this death and loss. It's just so sad, selfish, and disappointing how many fellow Americans were taught to be so self centered during this pandemic

Even with a mask mandate & distancing do you think the lions share of those pushing back on those 2 items would still disregard it?
I do.

I also believe that we're going on month 7 of restrictions and some people's give-a-damn meters are either on or near E. I am not saying that as though I don't think it's right, but it just is. IMO, YMMV

I live in the Midwest.

On Halloween, the sheer number of people out trick or treating in my neighborhood was ridiculous. They were shoulder to shoulder, about 10-20% of the people I saw were wearing masks. I said that day we'd be having record numbers and here we are.

None of this surprises me.

My sister works for a school board where an employee came in to work despite having symptoms and infected pretty much the entire office including my sister who then passed it on to her son who has some underlying health issues. Lovely.

People are stupid.

Kid in my son's class tested positive. 2 week quarantine starting for him now...yay!

Oh well, CHOP just suggested all schools in the area go back to full virtual starting this Monday anyway, so it is only a matter of time.

The main worry for me and my wife (who works on SARS-CoV-2 research up the street at Duke) is whether a good chunk of the population agrees to take the vaccine when it is available. If there are too many anti-vaxxers, even a fantastic vaccine won't help much.

At least if a vaccine is pretty good to fantastic, it will offer a good degree of personal protect for those who get it.

The seeming lack of ANY regard for public health by this country's population is gut-wrenching, honestly. As someone who's worked in public health for 15 years, I really thought this country was just better than this... What is happening now is SO much worse than it could have been.

You're posting more political crap!

The virus infects people.

If the people wear masks and wash hands and try to follow good protocols for social distancing, then it infects fewer people.

That's all we need to know.

As for a vaccine, I can't speak about anti-vaxxers. But I for one am ready for a dose at the earliest available opportunity.

No one says 'so what' when a 5yo dies.

Fact: around 1200 childrens lives could have been saved from the flu over Obamas terms if only he had instated SIP and masks. Why didn't he? If Biden wins, why doesn't he instate mandatory masking, forever?

Let me dig up a social media post about a 12yo boy who hung himself; I would post about the two kids at my daughters school who committed suicide in the last couple months (and none in the previous 5 years), but you would probably say 'so what'.

See how stupid you sound?
