so long story short, I'm not using who I would prefer, I'm using who is available.

I have a buddy who runs an AV company, but he's so booked up he wouldn't be able to do it until March/April. I'm actually using Abt and they will be out to do it on the 23rd. $1140 for 10 hours of work and 200 feet of speaker wire.

Gotcha. I was going to ask if it was Abt. Guy I grew up with used to work there, I'm not sure if he still does, but he's always been into home theatres and was my introduction to it back in the day. He worked at Best Buy in high school in there theatre department. He had some crazy expensive speakers he got from Best Buy back in the day in his home theatre setup, though I can't for the life of me remember if he had a projector back then or a tube TV. I do remember that we used to watch movies on a Lazerdisc player, this was circa 1994/95.

Edit: Just looked him up on Linkedin, no longer there since 2016. Looks like he's at a home theatre company now, is this your guy? https://www.omniaintegration.com/

What receiver do you have? I really don't like how my L&Rs drop off when I switch from Stereo into a 5.1 mode. I have the RP280FAs.

Denon X2400h.

As for Bass - I'm running a Deftech Center. It comes with a 10" SW. That handily takes care of the bass I need.

are you running your RP280FAs as full-range (large) or crossed over (small)?

Everything is set to large. Crossovers are set to 80hz. I also need to do a recalibration with the Audyssey.

What I'd like is for this, is to not start putting my L&R and C in the -6 - 8 range, and move my Atmos to +8.

What ends up happening is that my mains are barely putting out sound with the Atmos ones seemingly doing all the work.

When I'm playing stuff in Stereo - it's much much better. The Multi Ch Stereo mode just equalizes everything.

FYI, this is a nice deal on a 2-zone, Atmos capable receiver - Yamaha RX-V685 $399 - I bought mine last year used for $421 and really like it

I could be wrong - but you may need a stronger receiver. From what I read up on it, it was inflating it's power.

Are you saying that your LRC speakers are set to -6db from the start? That is weird.
I got a Sony receiver and have tried using speakers as large and small. Small always sounds the best. Seems like the receiver can control the crossover better this way.

My LR are currently at 0db. Everything else is based of those. +3 center so I can hear voices better, +3 for height @150hz, etc.

My plan is to change from bookshelf rear surrounds and front over speaker height to in wall speakers. Move the height to proper front of seating location, surrounds will be at awkward angles, but should be ok. My current bookshelf ones are at those location and they calibrated just fine.
They sound decent... It's hard to quantify when they're mounted pretty high and in a big room with hard surfaces. I am certainly happy with them. I'd imagine when mounted low and calibrated, they will sound pretty good.

Even your Atmos are set to large? Or just your mains?

I only have a 5.0 surround system, and run my L/R RP250F mains as Large/full range with no crossover point on them since I don't have a sub. I run my RP440C center and RP240S surrounds as small, with crossover points specified by Audyssey. 40hz for my center and 80hz for my surrounds.

I don't really use my 5 channel for music, except my 5.1 mix of Dark Side of the Moon on SACD... but for fun I just threw a stereo cd into my player and notice how bloated the sound is using DTS or Dolby or "Multichannel Stereo" modes, rather than Pure Direct 2 channel. My mains still are putting out lots of sound though in these multichannel modes... If anything, I'm hearing my center too much. I don't have any additional +/- db tweaks beyond the Audyssey config. My Marantz processor uses MultEQ xt32. I also have dynamic EQ and volume off.

Even the Atmos are set to large.

When I do the Audyssey calibration it's what it sets the speakers to.

I think the issue is that it wants to set the room up for a perfect Atmos source - which I have zero of. Almost everything is cable, or streaming aka no physical media.

I only use Multi Ch stereo for music when we've got people over and you want to listen to music loud. When playing from a pure source, and in the ideal seated position I'm back to Stereo.

oh interesting. maybe try setting the atmos to small with a 80hz crossover point so the AVR isn't sending a full range of signal to them for music? not sure how that would affect movies though...

just an update for anyone following on my Def Tech 9080x issues. A few things
1. Cruchfield is f'in amazing, I will never buy audio equipment anywhere else, I don't care if they are more expensive, they are just a dream to deal with.
2. I bought 1 pair of 9080x, loved them, but had the dreaded "pop" when the amps turned off. NBD, I call Crutchfield and they sent me a new pair, easy.
3. New pair has the same issue. At this point, Crutchfield has sent me 165lbs of speakers 3 times (2x to me, 1x to them) and now I'm feeling bad. So I call them to see what we can do, they offer to call DEf tech for me etc. I ended up calling def tech myself to see what they had to say about this and OMG.
4. Def tech customer service is the f'in worst. Took 37 mins on hold to get someon, the person I got was...like...I don't know, drunk? wtf. There were periods in the conversation where I was like "are you there? hello??" I talked for maybe 4 mins total, the rest of the time I was on hold, for a total of 57 mins. The result "you need to replace the amps on your brand new $3,400 speakers...yourself. We will ship them to you". FUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
5. F' them, I called Crutchfield, told them what def tech said, they also were like FFFEEEEEUUUUUU and helped me pick out a set of Martin Logan MOtion 60xTis, gave me a discount for every "bad" speaker I got, and shipped it out next day.

So, that's it. I'm super sad, the 9080x are so bad ass, they have so much potential. bipole speakers, atoms, 12" subs built in w/ 2 passive radiators, they sound amazing, but I don't trust that I'm going to have the support i need from def tech if the amps break again in the future. Super disappointed

That sounds about right... it's why I stayed away from them. I just did not want to deal with having to replace the amp myself.

Akira - sorry to hear about your situation

Doing a little work in my office/game space and the 5.2.2 setup. Elevated the C9 on a stand last weekend and moved the Prime Satellite center and sides up (Please disregard my ugly wall treatment. The whole room has a half inch of cork under the tacky fabric.):

And today I started mounting the Prime Elevations that are replacing the last of the Polk OWM3s I had temporarily mounted as my height channels. Hope to route the wiring in the crawl space tomorrow.

Should end up sounding pretty good for gaming in the small space once I get everything calibrated.

Jeebus that’s a pretty killer setup for an office.

I’m gonna grab dual pb1000’s on Black Friday.

I miiiiiiiight have thermal'd the amp? Unplugged it for 30 minutes and plugged it back in and it came back. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

and per Keith's issue, I was doing some digging and it seems like they had one good support person who recently retired. It is a small company after all.

I also really like my (smaller) BP9060s, not sure what I'll do now that the electronics are out of warranty if something breaks again.

12 inch Kilpsch sub on sale at Costco right now. 12 inch is overkill for my space, I was thinking 10 inch sub. Not a Costco member, but even with the $12 non member fee it's a good price, even over Best Buy

I'd like to know if that is indeed a good price - given that earlier the consensus was that it's not worth it and to go SVS instead.

There are a lot of klipsch vs svs reviews out there comparing this to the pb1000 and the svs always seems to show up better in the end with a “the klipsch is still good the svs is just a bit better” sort of overall thought.
