Default P0021 on 2014 WRX, new Motor 5k, New oil.

On about 5k miles from an engine rebuild by subaru (covered under warranty). Had them replace timing and plugs while in.

Threw P0021 and Misfire in cylinder 4 about 4 weeks ago. Changed the oil right after as it was coming up due, after the first breakin change. Now threw P0021 on my drive home. Cars running completely fine. Now all the reading on P0021 seems to be on older WRXs, so I was wondering what I should do with this? Does mine have Banjo filters? I have yet to pull the cover to check the timing, but considering how my cars running, I figured it was fine.

Also, if this something with timing, is there some type of warranty on subaru work they do? Guess this is a question for the dealer.

Heres the code. For some reason came up with 3.

Maybe your CAM Position Sensor is bad?

That’s what I was thinking, too. I guess the only way to check is to replace and see if it goes away? I’m going to check the timing belt,
And make sure jr didn’t jump first, I think.

I highly doubt its your cam sensor, but it could definitely be clogged AVCS oil banjo screens or just ruined adjustment pulleys from the engine not being properly cleaned during the rebuild. Since you paid them to do the timing, i suggest you take it back to them, they definitely ****ed something up.

Best and easiest way to check pull up a decent scan tool and you can watch the cam degrees. This will tell you if the timing jumped or the oil control valve for the AVCS is leaking and keeping the AVCS cam advanced or its a bad sensor.

Lightbulb Cam timing

We have pulled a few of these down in the shop. Yes, there is a fitting with a screen on both sides. the L. side will require more teardown, the R. is accessible with little teardown. We have found this to be a fix, like the older ones, leaving the screen out. It is a risk, so we let the customer know what we are dong. Mostly, do better, shorter oil changes. We use BG products.

Pull both Oil Control Valves, inspect, clean and install in the opposite bank. If the issue follows the OCV then replace it. As others have stated, check the filters located in the banjo bolt.

Man, warranty work done by Subaru, 5k and P0021?
I dunno

1)go stomping into dealership and explain poor workmanship
Could work mine you......
2)go into dealership, explain not trying blame anyone, willing to work on own car.......with direction. VERY possible a tech has a ***8216;spare' cam P sensor in his $6k toolbox that he/she/ you could swap to determine if sensor bad.

Ask to speak to service mgr....maybe even make appointment just to talk

Speaking from experience
I would be MUCH more accommodating to a reasonable customer than one that just says ***8216;I'm not paying for nothing....fix it MF'

I would be very surprised if it was a Cam sensor. They don't fail all the much.

Sorry for the late responses.. Just wanted to inform everyone the problem!

So, they replaced the cam sensor, ACVS (twice), timing pulls, sproket and a few other things. Each time the CEL came back on a few miles (50) down the road.

I asked them about the banjo a few times.. I didnt have the space (city parking garage, and no friends with garages ) to tear down and check the banjo myself. I asked them to check it when I first dropped it off. They said "its not it." So after my 3rd visit within two weeks, I asked nicely to pull the bolt and test me a picture. They said sure no problem. An hour later they call "Sure enough, the filter was sucked into the ACVS.. Blocking oil." Well anyways, its fixed, i've put about 3k on the car since on a quarentine road trip, its running well. And I didnt pay for anything out of pocket since the timing was so fresh. They "had" to put the filters back in the union bolts when I asked them to pull them all. So down the road, i'll have to pull them when I visit my parents.
