Default MAX (Formally known as HBO Max)

Starting a new thread for this as the new HBO Max streaming service will apparently have exclusive content.

It looks like if you currently subscribe to HBO through your cable company, Hulu or other streaming app, AT&T or HBO NOW you will get HBO Max included.

Right now it's not available on Fire sticks or Roku devices which sucks but they will most likely come to agreements with those companies sooner than later.

I have HBO through my AT&T cell plan so I just checked it out on my PC and it looks decent. A lot of the new content they promised is on hold due to COVID so there's not much different from the HBO GO or HBP NOW apps.

I canceled my sub through Amazon last month. Waiting for it to run out then I'll probably grab Max through YouTube TV.

I hope Amazon and Roku hash out their contracts soon, I'm really looking forward to this new service. I have ATT TV with HBO added, so HBO Max is free. I might just get a chrome cast off no deals are made in the near future.

I checked it out after the app updated about a month ago. I agree there's not much new in there. I had an HBO Now subscription already so it's kinda a moot point for us.

I do prefer the interface over the old HBO now. I just wish they would integrate into the universal search on the Nvidia Shield.

Yup another mark against it. They did say it's coming but no timeline on that either.

The new Anna Kendrick rom-com show is pretty solid if you watch that sort of thing, which is one of the new original content shows.

I noticed there's some more HBO Europe/Nordic produced stuff on there too which pleased me, as I was able to finally check out Beforeigners, while there were quite a few jokes and references you'd have to be Norwegian to get, my wife still really liked it.

And finally having access to Studio Ghibli's library has been awesome.

11 episodes into Doom Patrol and finding it hard to recommend. It has it's solid nuggets, but they're few and far between, and the rest is mostly filled with stuff to please critics imo. I can see why IMDB would give it such a high score, if you watched it through critic's lenses.

This is the only reason to have HBO Max if you didn't already have HBO Now before the upgrade.

Yeah we've had HBO Now from HBO directly for a while, so it was just a lateral update for us, but we were planning on cancelling soon, but Studio Ghibli being included means we won't.

So now we'll probably cancel Netflix instead, lol.

Pffft. Doom Patrol is great. Swamp Thing was even better and got totally ****ed and unjustly cancelled.

Hmm.. this is the first thing to make me think a HBO sub might be worth it. The Wind Rises (2013) is fantastic, btw.

One of the few I haven't seen yet, looking forward to it!

So far we've revisited Howls Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service.

I think next up will be Princess Mononoke as it's been a while since we've seen that one.

Saw that on the big screen last year or the year before, great! Neither fiancée nor I have seen Spirited Away, so we'll be catching that soon.

For anyone on Firestick I was able to sideload HBO Max on my Firestick last night. Works well except the app icon still says HBO Now. It took me a couple of tries as the first few wouldn't let me use the remote on the app. I think I had downloaded the mobile version by accident.

Yeah, that's how I got into them, I had seen Spirited Away, but then started going to see them when they showed up on the big screen around here for "Studio Ghibli Festival" or whatever they call it.

Honestly they're all great, I cried like a big ugly baby when seeing Grave of the Fireflies in the theater.

Perry Mason - top quality production, HBO gold standard. Casting is top notch, and attention to detail of the environment breathes fresh air to an old-fashioned whodoneit. It ain't the our grandpa's PG version though - gore, sex, crazy adult situations; all the good stuff you'd find in a deserving film noir.

Love Life was a good show. Interesting enough to pay attention to, and Anna Kendrick being a slut in some episodes

Does HBO max support 5.1 audio?

We watched a Harry Potter movie and Spirited Away and it did not have 5.1 audio, but the Google says it should have 5.1 audio support. Can't find anything in the settings either.

I should of waited for e12 before I opened my big mouth.

^this helped change my mind on how clever & quirky this series can be; and me thinks i need to re-watch earlier episodes since I was probably too lazy in viewing.

I happily discovered that HBO Max was an available app on my Samsung TV. I've actually been enjoying it a lot. I like the interface over HBO Go, like the electric people accents. Overall I'm pretty happy with the service and can see it maybe being a game changer, as far as becoming a premium must have streaming service like Netflix, Prime, Hulu and Disney+.

I've learned through reddit that HBO Max on android tv does NOT support 5.1 audio. Seems silly that this would be an issue.
