Better articulated:

Whatever happens, I'm fine with this season having all of the asterisks next to it forever.
Akshually I was doing some of the quizzes on the F1 website, and the "guess the driver by their teammates" one made me think of him again.

But really, even 10 years ago I was thinking he was better than most people thought.

He wasn't crap but he had stiff competition including pay drivers with more money. (iirc)

He also made more than a few bonehead moves.

2 podiums at LeMans is a nice little mark on the resume.

No podium ceremony this season.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/b...emony/4806188/

Formula 1's sporting director Ross Brawn has confirmed that the traditional podium ceremony will be missing when racing restarts in Austria next month.

The FIA, F1 and the teams have been working through all aspects of the race weekend in order to ensure compliance with new COVID-19 guidelines that the governing body has introduced.

All the pre- and post-race ceremonies will look very different as contact between people is minimised, and social distancing implemented.

“Because of the implementation of the procedures, we need to be safe and sure of the COVID-19 situation,” Brawn told F1.com. “The practises we have had in the past just can’t be done.

“So every aspect from the time teams arrive to the time they leave has been thought through, and it’s not completely finalised, but we’re working with the FIA to polish it.

“The podium procedure can’t happen, but we’re looking at doing something on the grid after the race. One option would be to line the cars up on the track and the drivers will stand in front of cars.

“We can’t present the trophies, as you can’t have someone in close proximity presenting a trophy, but we have worked it out, we have plans and procedures, we’re looking at how we can present it on TV.”

Grid build-ups could be abandoned as new safety option
It's not just Formula 1's podium ceremony that will have a very different look. Several other features in Sunday's build-up to the race will have to be revamped.

“The [Sunday morning] drivers' parade won’t happen as we can’t put 20 drivers on the back of a truck and take it round the track," Brawn added.

"So instead we will interview with each one of them in front of the garage. There’s plenty of ways we can engage without compromising health and safety.

“I’m 100% confident that we will make it an engaging and exciting product, it will just be different. This is the new norm. How long will this carry on? We don’t know, but this will be the new norm for the rest of the year for sure.”

As previously reported the grid procedure will look very different, with a minimal number of people present and without the usual ceremonies.

“Things like the national anthem, you can’t have all the drivers grouped together,” said Brawn. “And you can’t have our FIA Future Stars stood in front of them.

“The FIA Future Stars will still be part of the show virtually. They will have the uniforms sent to them and they’ll send us videos of them with a message which we can play, so there are lots of things we can do to make it entertaining.”

Meh. All processional hoopla. Show me all laps of the race, that's all I care about. Good news is they won't have much 3rd party crap to cut to mid-battle (drivers' gf/parents, crowd, celebrity, etc).

From worse to first.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/m...liams/4811082/

Mercedes is closing in on a new sponsorship agreement with ROKiT that could be in place for the start of the new Formula 1 season, Motorsport.com understands.
ROKiT previously served as Williams' title sponsor from the start of the 2019 Formula 1 season, only for the deal to be terminated by the team at the end of May.

But ROKiT is now on course to become a sponsor of the Mercedes F1 team ahead of the new season, with confirmation of the deal understood to be imminent.

A Mercedes spokesman said the team "can't offer comment on any confidential commercial discussions, be they with ROKiT or any other brand".

The ROKiT group covers a series of brands, including its own in-house phone company and the ABK brewery in Germany, the logos for both being carried on Williams' car through the 2019 season and 2020 pre-season testing.

Following the split with Williams, ROKiT stressed it remained committed to its motorsport activities, enjoying involvement in Formula E as the title sponsor of Venturi, as well as sponsoring all of the W Series cars.

Williams is understood to have informed ROKiT that it terminated the agreement on the day of the announcement, coinciding with the team confirming plans to find a new buyer or fresh investment in the coming months.

ROKiT will bolster Mercedes' raft of sponsors, joining companies such as title sponsor Petronas, Bose, Monster Energy and INEOS, the last-named becoming its new principal partner at the start of the season.

The arrival of ROKiT will support Mercedes' push to make its F1 operation more profitable in the future ahead of the arrival of the $145 million cost cap in 2021.

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said in February that making the team profitable was "exactly what we have as our target", aiming to make funding the operation a "no-brainer" for parent company Daimler.

"The marketing is huge and the return on investment should be the icing on the cake," Wolff said.

"We see that in the American sports leagues that most of them, the NFL or the NBA, are profitable franchises.

"This is my personal aim and my personal contribution with our partners to turn this into such a corporate company, so that from a service standpoint it becomes a no brainer to participate."

Smart move.

2022+ is going to be interesting with regards to teams. I think you may end up seeing even more of a divide between F1 and "F1.5"

Separately. Oh Grosjean you.

Sure - car has a lot to do with it - but it still comes down to a driver making the most of the package. Eking out that last 1-2% which truly differentiates you is key. It's prob why they can all have success at the junior levels - but are average to mediocre in F1.

I kinda see his point. Since the cars are soo varied you can really only compare team mates in that season, easily. Team mates have traditionally rarely done a lot of shuffling, too.

With soo many variables being introduced to slow things down and speed things up, it gets harder and harder to say, just drive what you got.

How? Push a car with tires that blister and wear? (as a design)

Do we really judge drivers by their ability to balance a cars performance with it's tire wear now? There isn't really much room for a driver to tame a crap car to a podium or points, even. It's going to be just as easy to say it's his conservative tire wear, or compound strategy, etc.

Things have changed, many good but not all.

I totally agree. I usually see it as a statement like, "For whatever reason, that car got to the finish line first". And of course, in the last few seasons, it's been the same car. But I hesitate to say who the best driver is. Button was really good at conserving his equipment, and that quality won him races, but does conserving make him the best driver? Maybe. I think that's why the "best driver" statement gets sub categorized sometimes. Like, you've heard Ricardo or Verstappen referred as the best passer on the grid. But they weren't winning the drivers championship.

The teams won a long time ago, in the battle for more exciting racing. Soo many interests go into it it's easy to feel for the drivers. Feeling kinda trapped in a dream that was just a fantasy.

Can't have those fantasy finishes too often. Usually means bad news for the big teams with all the "important" money on the line.

It's not impossible to make F1 a lot more like it used to be, In that regard.

Not sure these new rules are going to do much, hopefully I'm wrong.

looks like Ferrari never talked with Vettel for 2021, Binotto admitted the "lying" in former statements.
Mercedes has build another top car again, congrats for the championship
RedBull is too nervous in the rear, we will see much spinning from Verstappen and Albon throughout the season
And I would say the cars from Ferrari and Racing Point are on par, with better drivers the Racing Point would be better performing than the Ferrari
At the end of the field still Williams, Haas and both Alpha/Alfas

Yep
2020 Mercedes vs 2019 Mercedes (Race Point )

RedBull usually does well on this track. But we'll see.
RedBull also lodge a former protest against Mercedes' DAS system.

Ferrari is total crap. And they know it. Vettel is already complaining about it.
How Binotto is still running this team is beyond me.

Renault claims its power unit up to 1000 hp.

And yes Williams is still Williams.
